I thought they didn't work for mosquitoes?

That's correct. They do nothing for mosquitoes or other biting insects, and in fact only kill harmless and beneficial insects, the ones that would otherwise eat the biting insects. They also cause a cloud of vaporized bug bits for about ten feet in every direction that can be full of bacteria and viruses.

Basically, they're a complete waste of money, unless you just really love the crackle they make when they vaporize harmless moths.

What do you suggest then that is an alternative to citronella candles?

Product description says: Flowtron's lantern-style insect killer uses nontoxic ultraviolet light to eliminate mosquitoes, biting flies, and other insects over a 1/2-acre area.

So why doesn't it work on mosquitoes?? That's the only real reason I'm considering this deal.
edit:  The zapper uses octenol attractant and plenty of positive reviews mention it attracting swarms of mosquitoes -- so I think the "doesn't work for mosquitoes" is commenting on just the light/zapper

You need to buy the mosquito attractant packs (about $6 for 3 months life) if you want to use this to kill mosquitoes.

Green for vaporized bug bits.

Note: you should clean it out periodically & there is always lots of dead mosquitoes in it.
