This is a really good deal considering you are getting the hardware of an air in a smaller form factor.

Try to PM BB price at Target and see if you can get an additional $50 Target GC, YMMV though.

My transaction yesterday-

16GB iPad mini with retina display - $399.00
PM to BB price - $349.00
Got $50 Target GC

Final price : $299 + Tax
(price will come down 5% if you happen to have Target red card or you can use CB sites and do store pickup)

How does Target give you the $50 gift card? by mail-in or instant at check-out? Thanks!

Does anyone know....we bought the same mini for $399 3 weeks ago.  Will Best Buy refund $50 since its been within 30 days?  Or is that a wasted trip?

wow, thanks guys.  15 days?  I had no idea.  Just verified on my receipt.  I guess I should have done that first.  I always figured it was the std 30 days.

Any good case for this?

I think BestBuy PM is 30 days

WalMart is currently advertising a 'minimum $100 credit on your old iPad or iPhone' when purchasing a new one. Not as good as the $200 Target deal (that I'm still mad at myself for not jumping on) but still right around what a Gen-1 iPad might sell for used, minus the hassle of Craigslist or eBay.

WalMart _should_ price-match Best Buy if this is the regular in-store price, if I can swing that and use the trade-in this is a pretty good deal.

unless i'm mistaken, the WalMart $100 gift card only applies to new PHONE purchases, not wifi-only ipads

In this week's Target weekly ad : "Free $50 Target GiftCard® when you buy any iPad listed. Quantities limited; no rain checks." You get one of those red giftcards on the spot and it is good for any future Target or Target.com purchases.

Walmarts doesn't appear to be a gift card, just a straight trade-in with a $100 minimum. It definitely said iPhone OR iPad though, I'm not at home at the moment but I'll have to pull out the page. It was in their regular weekly Sunday newspaper ad.

edit: Here's the ad, it says iPhone or iPad, it doesn't specifically mention minis bbut doesnt exempt it. Hmm, might be worth a shot if it can be combined with the trade-in.

What if I want to price match the 64GB at Target.com to BB? Is this possible?

rated:
BB has the gen1 mini on sale this week for $280. I ended up getting that one for my 14year old daughters upcoming birthday. Should I go exchange it for this model? Will she notice a difference? She has played with my gen1 mini from work and loves it. She has a current gen iPod touch, too.
With the newest model being higher res, will the text be smaller on the screen for her? She prolly wouldn't like that.

rated:
Gen1 will stop receiving apple updates a lot sooner than this one, if that's something you care about.

Went to Target for the price match and $50 GC.  Worked like a charm!

Regular price on a non-retina iPad Mini is $299.  Return the worse one and buy it at Target for $299 and get a $50 GC.  Regarding going to a retina, the processor is much better than the 1st gen.  That said, she will not notice the difference today - in a couple of of years, it's possible this will be the case.  Regarding the 'text being smaller' that's not the case.   The only thing you'll notice is it will seem brighter and the pictures will have a better resolution.  No issues with text though.

Thanks for the feedback rsuaver and djtitati. After doing more reading online I'm still not sure which path I will go. She is 14, so will she even still be using the thing 3 from now, or will she want to be on a model 3 generations newer than either of these by then. If Apple were discontinuing the non-retina it would be easy - go with the newer one. I haven't heard of this happening, though - just that they are selling them both side by side.

Just got Target to price match to Best Buy and also received the $50 Target GC. No questions asked. Thanks everyone.

I am able to price match with BestBuy.com. After 5% Target debit card discount, Tax, total cost is $361. I got $50 Free Target Gift Card, total effective price is $311

To get a price match at Target, you'll have to negotiate with the manager. I did it yesterday: I called a few targets and I found one that said "yes, we can price match and you'll get the $50 gift card". I then went to a different one, but the associate wasn't allowed to give out the GC with the price match. The manager was able to do it without an issue by over-riding the price, but only after I explained that another Target's manager already approved such a transaction.

rated:
Target price match only will work with luck. I was talking to one of manager, and asked for the price matching policy. The price matching policy states that no price match is available with gift card promotion, that is in this case.

However, I tried to different Target, and the manager was happy to match the price as well as gift card.

just to add for those on fence about retina vs non retina, non retina ipad mini is garbage, just like my now defunct ipad2. it's too slow, 512MB of memory being the biggest culprit. there are a slew of other features like the motion co processor and updated camera sensors that make the retina mini the much more compelling. frankly, i can't believe people still buy that old crap. if i was on a budget, i'd just get an android tablet.

what's best deal now on a ipad mini w/ retina display?
