Finally. I was just thinking last night I better just bite the bullet and order the 521 from Newegg for $60 and be done with it. Go on computer today and, bang, a FW alert for this deal. Thanks OP. Also, don't forget the FW CashBack (4%) or 5% on Upromise.

Oh, any suggests for a good case?

rated:
Overall a good Phone.
However, don't buy it for the camera.

I bought this case and can't be happier.

Love this phone. I have 3 of them (one for me, wife and son). Is it an iPhone?? Not a chance. But it's fast and very reliable. I've never had to reboot (except Windows updates). I just got the update to Windows 8.1 the other day, and it's a big improvement. I notice that the camera is now taking better quality pics and vids, as well as alot of 'fine-tuning' adjustments for the camera now. 2 drawbacks: only one camera, and apps can be hard to find. Other than that, our family loves them. It's a steal at this price.

@ShakuniMama:  I have that same case in black, and LOVE it!!  The only drawback with it is that it makes the phone a little 'chunkier' (but I like that!), and can't really slide it out of your pocket real easy because of the rubber.  But the pros WAAAY outweigh the cons with that case!!

How / Where did you get update to Windows 8.1? is it from T-Mobile? I checked a lot of times, couldn't find any clue.

Thanks again to the OP and the others for advice on a case. I'm glad to see 8.1 made some positive tweaks. I did have a question about the upgrade, though. I know the 520 on AT&T has been upgraded, but did it happen for the AT&T MVNOs as well? I'm assuming T-Mobile will be updating this phone soon, but if you have it on one of their MVNOs (like Lyca or Ptel) are you at the mercy of them or, since they are using T-Mobile towers and such, the update will go out to all 521 phones? I've got an old Lycamobile SIM (the $0.02 a minute) and I'm assuming this phone won't even work on it. But I might upgrade to the new SIM, or move to Ptel, and was just curious about the 8.1 update.

Without a data plan will it still work as a dumb phone?

Yes. Of course you can use wi-fi for your data and use your apps and stuff. Plus Nokia has downloadable maps so you can use it as a turn-by-turn GPS without data.

T-Mobile hasn't updated any of their older phones to 8.1 yet, although they promised updates for the 521 and 925 "this summer."

The poster above who is running 8.1 on his 521 either has a 520, or (more likely) is using the Preview for Developers program which Microsoft makes freely available to get updates early.

Just a heads-up, upgrading to developer preview usually will break Wi-Fi Calling (either voice or text or both).

For what it's worth, the way the back/shell of this phone comes up past the edges of the glass screen sort of negates the purpose of a case. I mean, of course a case can provide even more protection, but I have beaten the hell out of mine for the last eight months and it still looks like brand new.

The 521 for TMobile is $10 more than the 520 for ATT. What are the major differences and is the $10 more worth it?  I was going to get 1 or the  other and put on H2O prepaid.
Heres the 520 for the ATT Go Phone.

521 has WiFi calling on T Mobile network. This will allow you to make calls using the internet if there is no radio signal to the phone. Other differences are not that important for USA users. The light sensor on the 521's camera may help improve picture quality by a small margin. The 521 is about 0.1" longer than 520.

I don't know if others have run into the same issues, but the WiFi  feature is/was fairly poor on my phone. Among other things:
- can't receive/send MMS over WiFi (but I'm not sure this is limited to this phone, a google search indicated other phones have this same issue)
- frequent freezes due to switching between data and WiFi connection. This can also cause SMS messages not to come through.
- sometimes calls made over WiFi don't complete the call and basically the phone just hangs
All but the first are easily fixable via a phone reboot. It's really hard to beat the price point, despite all of this.

The WiFi problems might have been more the router than the phone. I had the problems you describe with a particular router and it went away when hooking up with a different router.

Love this phone and the intuitive texting.  This is a great case for it - extremely sturdy:

How did you get the update to Windows 8.1?
My phone is not updated (still showing Windows 8.0) and when I tried to update by going into settings and checking for the update it says no updates available?

rated:
*All Windows Phone 8 devices support the Windows Phone 8.1 update. Update availability and timing varies by carrier. Features vary by device, carrier, plan and area.

If you have a 520 that's made for the USA market, then it's most likely locked to AT&T. Once unlocked, you can use this phone on Lyca's network. Phone can still receive AT&T updates via SETTINGS/SYSTEM/PHONE UPDATE. You'll need to run phone update several times to ensure that it has the Cyan Update and WP8.1.

I use mine without a case.

I don't see the point of a case on a $50 phone.

The shell of the 521 is more durable than the shell of the 520.

Replacement shells for the 520 are only $12.

Really crappy phone. Don't waste your money on it unless you are a bottom of the barrel cheapstake.

I couldn't stand it even for 30 minutes and threw this POS in trash.

 Well you are on FW.

As for actually throwing this in the trash, I'm calling shenanigans. Nobody is going to throw a new phone away. Almost all the reviews say this is a solid phone. An iPhone or Galaxy S? No. But serviceable and cheap.

any advice for using this internationally? will it work for prepaid T-Mobile or with T-Mobile monthly fee? what apps do you use to call and text internationally? looking for cheap and reliable. thanks.

As far as plans it will work on both

Would this work on MVNO Lycamobile, which uses T-Mobile towers?

The bare phone is too small for my man hands and it's also slippery (and it's girly white ). A $4 expense for a case was well worth it to me.

The main difference between the 520 and 521 is that they are locked to ATT and Tmobile respectively. They are both expensive to unlock, but at one point the 520 was cheap to unlock and the 521 was not.
