Are you getting this confused with the 840 EVO, which is the drive that is more in line with standard SSD pricing these days of roughly $0.40 a GB?

This is the current best price on this drive and from looking back at posts on FW and I'm not seeing it any cheaper.  I would buy a 1TB EVO when they come down in price personally (probably Black Friday), but there are those who want the 840 PRO for it's benefits. Here is a reference chart from tom's Hardware showing many of the popular drives out right now in a benchmark simulating real world use.  The 256GB 840 PRO is 3rd only to the 1TB EVO and the OCZ Vector 256GB.  As with all SSD's the higher capacity version of any drive is going to be a small percentage faster then it's smaller capacity versions.  Thus the 500GB 840 PRO is going to be questionably as fast or faster then the 1TB EVO plus it has MLC NAND instead of TLC.  There a many reasons why some people would pay the premium to go 840 PRO but I would say look it up if you are interested in that.

There is no doubt it's pricey, but I put it on here so that people who want this drive can get the best deal. Full disclosure this deal comes straight out of the Newegg emails and is also trending around the web.
