Bad Return Policy for Gifts

My friend gave me a necklace from R-S that I don't like, so I called R-S to see if I could possibly exchange it for another (more expensive) item. They informed me that if the item were returned, the giver's email would be notified. So now, there is no way I can exchange this without the risk of hurting my friend's feelings and I am stuck with a necklace that I don't like and won't wear!!
