There are 64 days until Black Friday 2011 and we’re counting them down with money saving and holiday shopping tips.
Protect your Black Friday budget by knowing the 6 marketing mind games (based on the book Influence, the Power of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini) that stores and sales people play on you to get you to buy!
Buyer Beware of Reciprocation Marketing
Have you ever sent someone a holiday card after you received a card from them in the mail even though they weren’t on your list? How about someone who you weren’t planning on buying for, if they gave you a gift don’t you feel like you should give them one too?
Marketers use this feeling we get of being obligated to reciprocate as a tool to get us to buy. You’ll see it every week if you take a trip to the grocery store on a Saturday morning in the form of free samples!
Another reciprocation trick sales people use is reciprocal concessions. That’s when you say no to buying something and the sales person comes back with a concession of a lower price or no cost upgrade on your purchase. They may be trying to get you to feel like they’re willing work with you to meet you in the middle, which could make you feel like you need to reciprocate and do the same.
When you’re shopping this holiday season be aware of how stores use reciprocation marketing. Free gifts at the door, samples with coupons, food and drink, and special treatment by sales staff are all marketing tricks that stores know will get you in the door, and guilt you into buying.
