Product Review: JH Gunship I/R Remote Control Helicopter from MiniInTheBox

Ever have one of those days when something unexpected happens and the next thing you know youíre writing a review about a remote-controlled helicopter? Me either, until now!

The other day I was handed a JH Gunship I/R 4-channel helicopter and asked to play with it and write down some thoughts; who could refuse that?

The helicopter is 245 x 190 x 113mm according to the dimensions on the box. That makes it about 9 ĹĒ x 7 ĹĒ x 4 ĹĒ. Itís a little larger than most of the helicopters that I have played with in this price range. Itís got a dual main rotor, 2 side (pod) rotors, and a horizotal tail rotor. It also has 2 red/blue flashing LEDs (one on each side), a red/green LED on the tail, and a bright white LED ďspotlightĒ on the front. The lights are all very bright and clearly visible at the distances that flying is possible. It came in a very sturdy box, and was secured firmly, but not so much that it was impossible to free from the box to play with in a timely fashion. Included in the box are an extra pair of main rotors and a spare tail/pod rotor, along with a little screwdriver for the screws holding on the main rotor.

Who is it good for?

I think that the 14+ age range on the box is probably fair, this is an electric flying toy after all! That said, I had several people with no experience at all fly this and they were able to figure it out fairly quickly, with little to no help.

What I liked:

Itís actually controllable! While many of these lower priced helicopters claim to be capable of forward, reverse, right and left flight, this one actually is. Itís by far the most controllable helicopter that Iíve flown. Flight times are reasonable for a helicopter of this size, with a slow drop off in lift that lets you know play time is over.

The helicopter is durable, with several bumps on the ceiling, floor, and anything else in the room causing no significant damage.

What I didnít like

There isnít much not to like with this helicopter! It tends to fly backwards a bit unless you give a bit of forward stick, but itís not that big of a deal. It is an IR remote, so you have to be within line-of-sight to fly it, so flying into someone elseís office isnít the best idea. When it loses sight with the controller it just drops uncontrollably.

  • Good flying helicopter in this price range
  • LED lights look cool
  • Extra parts in the kit
  • Durable
  • Well packaged, but easily removed from box

  • Manual isnít in the clearest English
  • You have to have a USB power port of some kind, or buy an extra charger

There are a lot of mini-helicopters in this price range. This one is the best handling one that Iíve flown, and it looks cool. Iíd definitely recommend this to a friend as a fun, low-priced remote-controlled helicopter.

A really good helicopter would be one that operated from from ipod touch using coordinates to fly it. Nobody tells you how hard it is to fly the thing back to you.
