Return Policy Round-up

Whether it doesn’t fit, is defective, or is just plain ugly; returning unwanted gifts after the holidays can be a real hassle! Often we are unsure of a stores return policy, or we may not want to wait in the long return lines! So we put off our returns until it is too late! You may be able to regift it in the future, but times are tough and there’s nothing like having a little extra cash now! Then you will be free to use that money towards the things you really want, and even earn Cash Back on FatWallet while doing so.

If you haven’t made it out to do your holiday gift returns just yet, you may still have time! To help make sure your returns will be in time this year, we’ve put together a return policy round-up of the most popular stores! But remember, there are some important things to remember when making your returns this year, according to An Insider’s Guide to Gift Returns; including returning items during the store’s slow period, be patient, be polite and understanding, and thank everyone involved. Don’t forget your identification, many stores will ask for it.

According to Amazon’s extended holiday return policy, if items where shipped from between Nov. 1, 2012 – Dec. 31, 2012, the return cut off is Jan. 31, 2013 for the full refund, unless otherwise noted in Amazon’s return guidelines. For full policy details visit Amazon’s Returns and Refunds.
For all Best Buy in-store returns and exchanges must have either the original receipt, gift receipt or packing slip. Purchases made between Nov. 4, 2012 – Dec. 24, 2012, may be returned through Jan. 24, 2013. Read Best Buy’s Return & Exchange Policy for more information.
Kohl’s offers a hassle-free returns policy giving customers the ability to return any item. If original receipt is present or the purchase was made with the Kohl’s Charge card, any item may be returned for a full refund or exchange. If the gift receipt is present for return, in-store credit is given. Without a receipt, an even exchange may be done or receive in-store credit.
JCPenney offers what they call “happy returns” which covers any item, anytime, anywhere. With a receipt items are eligible for exchange or refund, with a gift receipt customers can get a store gift card, and even without a receipt items may be exchanged or refunded the current price with store credit.
Kmart allows returns with proof of purchase within 28 days of the original purchase. They do not allow returns of the following: Printer cartridges, Cosmetics and fragrances, Bedding accessories, Swimwear, Hosiery, Underwear, or Gift cards. With a receipt Sam’s Club will refund in full. Without a receipt, the latest sale price will be given in store credit. There is a 90 day return policy on electronics; such as TVs, computers, digital music players, cameras, and projectors with the original receipt. Return / Refund Policy
The return policy at Sears is a very detailed, and varies by the item. Since different items may follow either a 90 day, 60 day, or 30 day return policy; visit their Return and Exchange Policy for full details. Other restrictions apply to appliances, electronics, mattresses, and other items; and may also include a restocking fee of 15%.
Staples does not have deadlines for returns, except on electronic and furniture. Electronics and furniture purchases have a 14 day return policy, and purchased made between Nov. 22, 2012 – Dec. 24, 2012, may be returned until Jan. 12, 2013.
Target can look up any receipt for items that were purchased using a debit card, credit card, check, or Target gift card. A receipt is required for all returns and exchanges, and most all returns must be made within 90 days of purchase unless otherwise noted. Exceptions include electronics, most of which have a 30 day return policy. For further exemptions and restrictions see Target’s return Policy. Returns with a gift receipt will receive a gift card.
Toys R Us and Babies R Us offers 90 returns on most items with a receipt. Unless noted in the Return Policy Exemptions. Exemptions include computers, gaming consoles, cameras, audio and video players, and more; which have a 45 day return policy.
Expect Walmart to have a 90 day return policy on most items. For items purchased between Nov. 1, 2012 – Dec. 24, 2012, Walmart has extended the typical 15 day return policy for items such as TV’s, computers, music players, cameras, as well as DVDs, to a limited 15-30 day return period that began Dec. 26, 2012. . Walmart even returns many items without a receipt, for the option of cash (if the item is under $25), or store credit. Only three no-receipt returns are allowed within a 45 day period.
