Stockpile Staple Items for Last Minute Football Gatherings

September 6, 2012 | Posted By: Shannen Bayless | Categorized in: Entertainment, Food & Dining Out, Couponing

Itís Friday night after the high school football team has just won their second game of the season, and your husband calls to say heís invited a bunch of guys over for a few beers after the game. You immediately shift into ďhostessĒ mode. You start scrambling to find some kinds of snacks to serve everyone without having to load your kids into the van to make a quick run to the store. Even though when this happens at my house, I know our friends probably arenít expecting anything, but I like to try and always have a few things on hand in my stockpile for those last minute football gatherings.

If your house is like many in the country your Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays are consumed with football games in the fall. Or maybe itís just my household? The high school season in its third week (Go Hubs!), college football season underway (Go Badgers!), and the NFL season kicks off this weekend (Go Pack Go!) so we are almost always hosting or attending some football party or another. At the Bayless house, fall equals football!

Here are a few things I recommend to keep on hand in case your husband invites the football staff over or you get invited to an impromptu football party on Saturday or Sunday afternoons.

Pantry Stockpile

  • Salsa
  • Crackers
  • Chips (especially Tostitos, Fritos, or Ruffles that go with about any kind of dip!)
  • Can chili
  • Cheez Whiz
  • Chex Mix or Gardettos
  • Other supplies for chili

Freezer Stockpile

  • Extra bags of wings or quick appetizers (especially if you find a good sale as these items can be pricey)

Refrigerator Stockpile

I realize that these things will have a shorter shelf life, but still like to keep them on hand because we use them all the time in other things.
  • Cream cheese
  • Shredded Cheese
  • Sour cream

Quick Fixes

Iíve found a lot of things that I can make quickly just by keeping this list of must haves during football season. For example, a bag of Tostitos and salsa or a can of chili, Cheez Whiz, and Fritos can be two quick fix snacks to share. You can also make a lot of dips that include cream cheese, sour cream, and/or mayonnaise and set out crackers to go with it.

You should also keep an eye out for sales on items you may want to use for dishes later this fall just in case your husband gives you a week or two notice about an upcoming football gathering.
