According to the NRF, January is traditionally one of the slowest months of the year for retail sales. However, this isn't the case at online discounts sites like FatWallet and Ebates where some of the savviest shoppers cash in on clearance deals with added cash back. Our data tells us it’s one of the best months to get some rock bottom prices on a number of last year’s in-demand products, especially for certain electronics (like HDTV "upgrades" for the Super Bowl).
Here’s a short list of savings opportunities in January:
Early January:Tax Software goes on sale for all of the early-bird filers. Providers like H&R Block, TaxAct and TurboTax will offer their best discounts of the year and increase cash back for smart shoppers in FatWallet’s Tax Software Deals. FatWallet's Finance forum is a hidden secret for expert tax advice, tips and tactics to save the most and get the best returns.
Vacation Package Deals are steals this month as many travelers are burnt out, tapped out and there are vacancies galore, especially at casino destinations. Look for great deals on airfare/hotel combo packages and it’s the best time to book a trip to Vegas. Avoid luggage deals if you can wait until Spring, it’s well worth it.
Jewelry and Fragrance Deals have a short window of discounts before pricing goes back up for the new year leading up to Valentine’s Day sales (yes, sale doesn't always mean best pricing). Look for great deals on watches and perfume in the first two weeks of January.
Winter Apparel can be had at good prices as again, after Christmas sales often feature great bargains and deep category discounts on outwear like coats, hats, gloves, boots and sweaters. Look for these savings in both clothing/apparel and sports/outdoors categories. Wait for March for even better prices if you're not picky about selection.
Video Games are at some of the lowest prices of the year as after Christmas sales try to clear shelves of one of the hottest sectors for gifts, especially the hottest most coveted games that weren’t heavily discounted in December. There will be some discounts on game consoles, bundles and controllers, too.
Mid-January:As the “Big Game” approaches, TV and Home Theater upgrades are at premium pricing. Unlike the low to mid-level quality deals that are seen during Black Friday, it’s the higher quality/latest models that get reduced significantly for Super Bowl Sales events as retailers and brands attempt to move inventory and make room for the newest models that show up in late March through early May. HDTV Deals will have the biggest selection for upgrading to higher resolution and advanced features during the last two weeks of January. This is an excellent time to look for home entertainment package deals where you can significantly upgrade both audio and video at cut rate prices in one purchase!!!
Other Electronics deals are worth checking out if you’re in the market are cameras, video and home audio equipment all have the same pricing circumstances as HDTVs this time of year. We would recommend to avoid laptop and computer upgrades until March at the earliest. The FatWallet Hot Deals forum is one the smartest online communities to utilize for finding these fast-selling super deals for electronics in January, and year round.
Other January Bargains:Look for food savings on party munchies and beverages, health and diet foods and winter foods (Coffee, cocoa, soup, chili, etc.). This is also a good time to look for signup bonuses on health club memberships and check the January sales on exercise equipment and work out apparel. A limited selection of air conditioners, grills, pool and patio furniture will have huge savings if you’re able to find something in stock.
