The Oktoberfest of inventory clearance sales is among us. They can be huge with several product lines on sale this month as retailers look to make room for holiday merchandise. Columbus Day provides stores with an early and easy reason to market category/department discounting. Shoppers should look for steep markdowns on some major appliances, mattresses, air conditioners, gas grills, cookware and patio furniture, umbrellas and those accessories. After a somewhat slower summer buying season, the pickins should be plentiful. Ditto with lawn & garden closeouts and should there still be Back-to-School leftovers, these lucky finds will be super cheap.
October is timely for savings on fall clothing, especially designer jeans and men's shoes. Last Year, Nordstrom brought one of the best clothing deals with "Up to 70% off Men's Shoes, Apparel, and Accessories". Two other very popular deals in FatWallet's Hot Deals forum were from Nike who offered "Up to 70% off Clearance Shoes and Apparel" and 6PM with "Up to 70% off Fall Apparel by Nike, Reebok, Puma, New Balance". Check name brand and discount shoe sites for early October store-wide discounts and use stackable coupons and cash back to bump savings (LIVE: Shoes.com offering 10% store-wide w/free ship +10% cash back).
Another standard item savvy shoppers look for price-drops in October is on last year's toys, especially the tech toys as retailers discount these items in hopes to make room for the new hot toys (Our Black Friday 2012 Toy Deals Recap should help you target the "still in vogue" toys and grab a Furby or Skylander fairly cheap). However, we recommend to stay clear of other tech sale items until Thanksgiving Day (when Black Friday starts online), unless you really need something now. In this case, check resources like FatWallet's Hot Deals forum and set topic alerts for items of interest as often out-of-season deals are worthwhile like Tiger Direct offering a Samsung 11.6" Chromebook for $249.00 last year...same regular price today...but not a year ago.
Holiday travelers should, if they haven't started, keep on eye out for holiday discounts on airfare, hotels and car rentals. Southwest Airlines offered a coupon last October for 40% off Wanna Get Away Fares and $69 nonstop routes to 14 cities so if you were traveling to those metro areas for Thanksgiving or Christmas, you got there 40% cheaper! Just like the Hot Deals topic alerts, Travel Discussion topics can save you a boat load of money and help you get the most out of your travel rewards.
Halloween shoppers can either buy early for selection, or hold out for last minute sales. Newegg brought the best costume and decorations sale in 2012 offering 90% off more than 100,000 items (yep, we said Newegg). Either way, adding timely coupons and other rewards always makes for “smarter” deals. FatWallet's annual Halloween Cash Back Sale should sweeten the final cost of your costumes and decorations!
