Are you gonna be locked to MetroPCS for life?

rated:
Great deal! But I'd just mention that you can only use the mail-in rebate on an activated MetroPCS account , after your second month's payment (meaning you need to sign up for service).

Still great at $49 if you decide not to activate and use the rebate. As a car MP3 player, for example.

A few other phones are on sale as well at the same price. I'm replacing my lost Samsung Exhibit, which I find is just a scaled own version of the Galaxy. (And has the Android operating system, unlike the Nokia.)

Can this phone work on T-Mobile w/o unlocking?

rated:
I may be under the incorrect impression, but although MetroPCS is a T-Mobile user, these phones cannot be unlocked to ever use T-Mobile or Straight Talk or even Lycamobile.

Would someone please confirm or deny?

My wife has this phone and it's not that great. Camera sucks and no flash.

that's because it is a phone and not a camera

You must be out of your mind if you want to compare this phone to an iphone or other smartphones that cost $300 or more. If you compare this phone to other phones costing $69 or less it has the best functionality and hardware by a mile!

Features to be loved: Free gps (you do not need network connection), radio, skydrive (27gb this year with windows phone), people hub(combining ALL social network into one place with dynamic tile), photobeamer(turns any web browser into a projector using your phone).
Oh, did I mention it also comes with a great gps?

Edit: corrected typos.

I've got a Nikon D5100 and that piece of crap won't get even 3g anywhere!

Agreed on the gps.  I tried this phone and hated it, but the gps was the best I've seen on any phone.

how long as she had it?

Thanks

Actually the camera is pretty decent even without the flash light. Most of the small LED flash lights on cell phone cannot lit much anyway.

rated:
Without wireless connection starting a new destination is a pain. Most likely the data on your phone are not indexed. So in this case using it as a standalone gps is not great.

Smartphones are cameras too.  This one is not a particularly good one due to its small sensor size & aperture, and no flash. Indoor photos are very noisy. Also no front facing camera. You may not care at all about camera performance but some people do.
For reference:  Lumia 520/521: 1/4" 5mp sensor and f/2.4 lens  vs. iPhone 4  1/3.2" 5mp sensor and f/2 lens

As others have mentioned it has several good points too, like the GPS which functions well without cell network, and the app supports offline maps.
Does that not matter because it is a phone and not a GPS?

Did anyone able to figure out how to tailor made the route e.g. least/most use of freeways etc.

Assuming you mean the HERE Drive app, Settings/Route settings lets you toggle toll roads, highways etc.  Only on and off options though.

Your IP4 cost at least $400, the 521 cost $30. IP4's gps is significantly worse than the 521's. Now go spend the $370 you saved to buy a decent DSLR

Anyone that has unlocked, please let us know.

The iPhone 4 is a useful comparison as it is the leading model phone with a 5mp camera, many people are familiar with it, and it is popular in the aftermarket.  The Lumia 520/521 is a good value for many people but to be clear, its camera is one of its weakest points.  A 16gb iPhone 4 can be bought for about $125 on Amazon in very good condition.  The $30 price is post-rebate and only valid with paid MetroPCS service.

$40/cheapest one  time 3 = $120/quarter unlimit talk/txt/data(please cheack their web site for detail limitation)

$49 -$20 + $120 =$149 for a unlock Lumina 521
Than one can use LycaMobile $.2/min
[edit]Than one can use LycaMobile $.02/min

One can also choose to buy Moto G for $179.99 ans use LycaMobile $.2/min right away.

It would be NOT bad to keep it for wifi only for $49.

$.2 is 20 cents.
20 cents per minute is too much

Activation (followed by 3-day wait) is required in that offer, read the steps.

i would be very careful with purchasing this for use on tmobile.

can someone else clarify this for me

Haven't messed with the camera much but just found out the 521 has FM RADIO! Even better now, need headphones for antennae and it's inside the stock music app. Also the Nokia $20 Voucher is still alive, till the 31st.

these phones are tmobile gsm version and will work perfect on tmobile, Metropcs dealers can no longer cdma phones and are not allowed to activate on cdma network anymore,

Actually the Iphone costs $600+ without a contract, which makes it even more of an absurd comparison.

Can we read this thread?

I tried with my T-Mobile SIM card on my friend's phone Nokia 521 and Alcatel Fierce, both are not working. In short, MetroPCS GSM phones should be unlocked before to use with any other GSM carriers. as mentioned by "bluediamond2077" in this thread above after 90 days phone will be unlocked by MetrocPCS, free of charge.
