Isn't $854 + about $60 in tax for a total of over $900 cheaper than $799 by at least $100 ?  Sounds like a deal to me.

No, the MacBook Air and Macbook Pro are different.  The Pro you linked to has the Retina display (higher density per inch) than any of the Air currently have.

combine this with a 10% (5x) eBay bucks and you are $$$

Processor Speed: 1.40 GHz? I'll pass.

rated:
1.4ghz is when it runs to save battery, then it ramps up to 2.7ghz when that is needed. Although these days, the processor is the least of your concerns, it's bus speed and ram that should be considered.

The only reason I personally would never buy this model is due to 4GB of ram. That kills performance right there, unless you just an average user and plan on keeping it only a few years. These days 8GB+ is the only way to go, as you will max out 4GB just idling most days.

Edit: I have the 13inch, 1.7ghz/256GB/8GB version of the above and right now I'm using 4.79GB of ram with only a handful of items open (normal usage).

A targeted promotion. For which I've never been targeted. Anyone know how many people get that, which ones, and why? If it's a small fraction, would people PLEASE consider not ceaselessly and pointlessly restating the obvious fact that the lucky few who already know who they are can get what they already know they can get?

Nvm "4GB RAM" is conveniently omitted from the specs... insufficient in my opinion.

The Sony Vaio deal has a 11.7" screen with a 1080P touchscreen and a great stylus with a better processor for $220 less than this.

It is still at $799.99 on eBay. So the deal is still live.

Apple give warranty based on sn on the product, nothing to do with who is reseller.

Used to work for MSFT as PM.  MSFT screws up the OS on every other version:

1.  Win 95/98
2.  Win ME - total piece of crap
3.  Win XP
4.  Vista - incredible piece of crap
5.  Win 7
6.  Win 8 - bastardized joke OS to appease tablet crowd

There is HUGE demand and market for Win 7 Pro and best bang for buck for MSFT FTEs and Alumni are to buy Win 7 Pro at Company Store for $35 and flip it for $180 cash - juicy profit

You just reminded me that I never did call MSFT & get my $15 refund for Windows8. Windows 8 has no reason to exist.

Have you used Windows 8? If you have, then you would know why so many people actually consider installing Win7 over Win8 as an upgrade.  Sad but true!

Very accurate I used to work there too has a blue badge as a Sr Dev. And I also still prefer win 7 I hate what they have done with windows 8. But thats not to say you cant grab any PC today off the market and throw windows 8 on it. I even prefer chromebooks over windows 8 and they are about a quarter of the price of a freakin macbook!

LOL are you seriously comparing a ChromeBook to this?

PS the ones who "prefer" Win7 over Win8 are idiots. Just saying. In about 5 minutes time I make a Windows 8 machine look and feel just like Windows 7 but with all the added features of 8...including security. 8 is a far more robust OS. But keep your head in the sand...

This is $699 with the eBay bucks if you received the targeted 10% offer + 5% bonus (I did) so a pretty solid deal. I will take this over a ChromeBook or whatever $300 special of the week is up.

For once, a good deal on a MacBook.  You can easily resell this a year later for very little loss if you decide it's not up to the task.

I just can not get over only a 11" screen. I think a 13" is small, but 11", come on.

I have the surface pro 2. A first i didn't like windows 8 only and only because of the metro interface. After i got over that, windows 8 is really no different then windows 7.
The surface is my main computer since i hook it up to a external monitor and keyboard. My windows 7 pc is used for games and my mac for work.

Truthfully i don't see whats the big deal is between 8 and 7. Maybe i just get used to virtual environments easier then most.

Ya your comments are back by the massive user adoption for windows 8 and how every iteration they are trying to make it closer and closer to windows 7 right? Ya keep talking crap its clear you know dick about this industry just your own personal experience. Windows 8 is a flop plain and simple countless people and articles will back this do some research...

Win8 has been a total & abject failure, supported only by the still ongoing pre-loaded software on OEM hardware model, which will one day be converted into a full blown customization (i.e. giving end-users a menu of software choices) model, in which case, Microsoft will be truly in full fail mode (unless it literally does a 180).

MSFT Win8 = the Big Suck.

A couple of months ago I bought a Macbook Air to replace an XP machine rather than deal with Win 8. I did have one Lenovo XP with the requisite hardware that I upgraded to Windows 8. Windows 8 is a mish mosh of a tablet OS and the legacy Win 7 OS. Win 8 is a total kluge. Only use the Win 8 machine for printing extra coupons. Windows 8 was not the learning curve disaster some have made it out to be but it is just not much fun to use. It gets in its own way most of the time. I might change my mind if I only used it on a tablet.

My Macbook Air has a 13.3" screen and is small in size compared to the Lenovo 14". I can't imagine using a smaller 11.6" screen.

I bought 2 Dell laptops for my daughters for Xmas 2013...I have been trying to get a problem taken care of for 2 weeks now and can't make it past their foreign, level 1, canned responses tech support.   2 weeks and I haven't been able to speak to 1 American that can help me out.
I'll never buy Dell again.

Funny how Mac Air deal post turned into Win 8 bashing forum.  Hard to believe Win 8 lovers posting here too as you guys must be blue badge FTE from Redmond (advice - just get the hell out or "retire" from MSFT and you'll be LOT happier - from ex Mr. Softee).

Here is my experience - got 1 cheap from BB deal after X-mas for my wife and she hates it not to mention my complete irritation.  She goes straight to Win 7 page sort of thru Win explorer mode.  User interface is the worst ever and for older folks out there worse than "Bob" (around Win 95 days).  I for one cannot believe MSFT actually release it as MSFT employees adopt is much sooner as part of the "dog fooding" it.  No wonder Win PC platform is under fire not only from Tablet and Mac OS (even from very limited joke Chrome) but death of Wintel extortion (INTC has been in REAL trouble and short sellers' hit list for months).

As for me - bought this Air for daughter and requested to replace HP Elitebook with Macbook Pro with retina display at work.
