I have 2 Nexus 7's. Love them...fantastic devices...but this is not a device I would buy refurbed. I had some issues with one of them, and the early batches had some defects, which is likely what you'd be getting. Not worth saving the extra $ IMHO.
It is a very good tablet for an adult. But for kids (under 3), they need ipad-like home button, otherwise it is very hard to navigate for them... hence moving on to ipad mini.

Don't know about that, kids adapt quickly to tech. My son started using the tablet (WebOS on HP Touchpad) and my smartphone (Android) when he was 8 months old and figured everything out pretty damn quickly.

Don't underestimate the intelligence of children. It's important for them to have constant intellectual challenge. Heck confronting them with 2 buttons could blow their freaking minds... in GOOD way. By the time they are 20, they might even be ready for complex tools like keyboards, microwaves, and remote controls, but again, ease them into it. I'd stick with 2 buttons until they are about 14, then maybe add a key FOB with 5 buttons at age 15 so they have time to get used to it before they get a driver's license.
Full disclosure: I have no children, but I do have a cat who knows how wake me up when she is hungry.
another thing to note is, I had a tpu gel case on it, which literally hidden the buttons and was really hard to press.... but my kid really loved watching Netflix. The display is one of the best in this segment.
