eBay - More items than your local Mom and Pop Store

by Registrycoin on December 30th, 2010
You may have heard of eBay. It is a very popular international online market. There are many, many items available for auction or sale at eBay. The marketplace is overseen and regulated by eBay, but almost all business is conducted directly and entirely between buyer and seller. Buyer protection, to a certain degree, is maintained by eBay. With a little patience and common sense, eBay can be a safe and pleasurable marketplace.

For Buyer very few good deals--For Seller Ebay fees are too HIGH!

by gipper222 on March 21st, 2011
Ebay's fees are too high now for a small seller to barely make any profit and they've announced that their fees are going higher yet! This has forced the small seller to either raise their prices (which isn't competitive) OR many small sellers have had to charge the buyer a little more for shipping charges to offset the fees. Remember that Ebay took over Paypal, and Paypal charges it's own fees on top of the Ebay fees! Ebay has literally squeezed out the small seller that typically sells the DVDs or books they have around the house, unwanted gifts they've received, yard sale treasures they've found, collections they've decided to part with because they need a couple of $$. The Post Office is raising their prices AGAIN, so now Ebay is raising their selling fees again. Ebay used to charge an insertion fee to list the item PLUS a "final fee" to the seller only on the price the seller sold the item for. Now Ebay has decided (in April '11) to charge the seller a "final fee" on the price the item sold for + on the shipping cost to ship the item to the buyer. Like any retail store, once seller's costs go up; they have to charge the buyer to make up the difference OR it will not be profitable to sell anything! Ebay is just greedy and has ruined the foundation of their "empire"; which buyer & seller equally enjoyed for many years...and which made Ebay the "big corporation" it is today! NOW, it is clearly impossible for the small seller to make a couple of dollars on Ebay. Big business and greedy corporations STINK!

Ebay is fine, but this item was a DUD!

by guinealady on May 27th, 2011
We purchased a Sony projector lamp from CompuDigital on ebay. It looked new, and was packaged nicely. Turned out, it was not new. In fact, it was burned out! $100 bucks down the drain!!!!

Hooked on the bay!

by Hunny156 on May 17th, 2011
Yeah, we all know that there are issues with some sellers on this site, and that over the years, Ebay has cracked down to the point where it isn't as awesome as it was in the early years, but if you know what you are doing, Ebay is still the way to go. It's my first stop for almost anything I need, and usually far cheaper than anything you can get locally. Buyer beware, do your research, and enjoy the hunt!

eBay shopper

I've gotten some FABULOUS deals on eBay. Just be sure to ask a lot of questions of the seller, and check out te seller's feedback/rating. Don't take anything for granted if it's not specifically stated in the seller's description. (Not complicated, as it sounds!)You can get some REALLY nice stuff at fabulous prices---and 1% back from FarWallet!

this review is specifically to the one star reviewer.

while i certainly don't condone a business raising their fees, my impression is that the new ebay change to include shipping fees in the sellers cost was to SPECIFICALLY stop sellers circumventing the process by charging an unreasonably low price for the item, then making up for it in shipping and "handling" fees. these auctions- the ones for .99 + 29.99 shipping and handling do a disservice to both the buyer and eBay.

while i have found the vast majority of sellers to be honest about shipping charges, there are a number of very high turnover sellers, many from overseas that appear to be abusing the system. when my package arrives (even from outside the US), the postage paid is often only 10% of what was charged for shipping. this difference is sheer profit for the seller. I don't receive ebay bucks, fatwallet cashback, ebay gets no fee, and other sellers are at a disadvantage if they are charging a reasonable price.

i've used ebay since 1998 and have only had a very small number of disappointing transactions. I appreciate that this is a very tough time for sellers as postal fees are rising at the same time as this ebay change. hopefully, your prices will be more competitive as the playing field is more level.
