Great Post OP! Thank you for your hard work!

I need to buy a 32" for my 91 year old mother. What is the quality of the Emerson, Dynex, Element, Proscan, and AOC models? I wish Olevia was still around, they sold a very good 32" at Micro Center two years ago. What about the more expensive Toshiba and Samsungs, are they noticeably better?

Add the SamsClub 42" philips 42ta648bx, its $798 or $799 i dont remember. Picked up my turkey there tonight and they had several palettes of these ready to go for fri. I think i may nab one.

I read somewhere that the sale prices in-store will also be the sale prices online for some stores. Unfortunately I'm unable to go to a store on BF so I was hoping to find something good online. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

excellent compilation, OP

none of the deals look hot to me..

I had bought samsung 52" LCD HDTV (LN52A550) from Amazon in Aug for $1700 including taxes, shipping and white glove delivery from CEVA. also got 24 months no interest financing from Amazon..

look for the specs carefully..Circuit City website explains them good...diff in contrast ratio, resolution makes a huge impact, also look for #s of inputs/outputs, viewing angle

my eyes could not tell me any diff between 60Hz and 120Hz model. I don't think it's worth to throw extra money for 120Hz models..

I wish Olevia was still around, they sold a very good 32" at Micro Center two years ago. What about the more expensive Toshiba and Samsungs, are they noticeably better? The Dec. 2008 Consumer Reports has ratings for LCD and plasma TVs, and generally the major brands rated more highly, overall and in picture quality, but even the worst weren't that bad. OTOH when it comes to reliability, the most reliable LCDs bought from 2005-2008 ranked as follows (< 3% point differences not statistically significant):

Sanyo: 1%
Sony, Sylvania (Funai), Panasonic, JVC, Sharp: 2%
Toshiba, Vizio, Samsung, Phillips Magnavox: 3%
Olevia, LG, Hitachi: 4%
Westinghouse: 5%
Polaroid: 6%
Mitsubishi: 7%

Envision is a real TV maker and is a brand of Korea's AOC. Emerson is probably made by Funai, a Japanese company that has long produced low-end products sold under several brands, including Sylvania and Symphonic, and even products for more established companies, like Philips/Magnavox, JVC, and Toshiba (those three used to sell Funai VCRs). Apparently Westinghouse is by Chi Mei Electronics, Polaroid by Xiamen Overseas Chinese Electronics Company. Olevia just assembles LCD panels (made by LG), tuner/logic boards, and power supplies into plastic cabinets.
