I have paid no attention to the price comparison between Thanksgiving and Christmas, until now - when I decide to buy a TV.

Will be the price (Say for a 37'/42' 720p/1080p TV) be lower at Thanksgiving or Christmas? Any idea?

Many thanks~

No one knows for sure, but I'd say that generally you'll see better prices around Thanksgiving. If you see a deal you like I'd go for it and not wait around until Christmas.

Don't forget the week before the Super Bowl

Go for the doorbuster Black Friday price.
Look for the Hot Green Rated FW postings on the Black friday deals.

Due to the recession, some stores like Sears and WalMart are already supposedly releasing doorbuster bargains.

Go for under $500

So... i was thinking this post belonged more in Deal Discussion since its not related to any specific BF deal. But look what I got when I tried to alert the mods: "You are not allowed to notify the Moderators about this thread. It does not exist."

The part that really tickled me was the last line.

Its a tough call. I think historically Super Bowl tends to have the best deals of the year. BF doorbusters are a bit hit or miss year to year, and pretty difficult to score. It seemed like last year there were actually better deals in the weeks before BF than on BF itself.

I think this year is a bit unique. It seems to me like there are a number of issues coming to bear all at once (recession, surplus inventory and production capacity, rapid LCD tech changes 120Hz to 240Hz to LED and 720p to 1080p, popularity of LCD over Plasma) that have lead to some remarkable deals in the past few months. Its hard to tell if these will continue to get better in the coming weeks/months, or if we've already past the best deals. BTW i can't really back any of that up, its just my read on the current situation. Regardless, you should be able to get a very good price compared to 1-2 years ago any time in the next few months

For myself, I just pulled the trigger on a floor model. Was able to roll a number of discounts together to get a Panasonic TC-P54G10 with 446 hours for $841 OTD from Sears. My 30 day return period covers through black friday, cyber monday, and into the push toward christmas, so it seemed like a good time to hedge my bets.

Good luck, and happy hunting.

Rob

I personally am waiting until next year to buy a tv (unless current one craps out).
LED backlight tv's will have a better foot hold of the market and drop in price. Never liked the power consumption of LCD or even worse plazma. I like the current Samsung 55" 8000 series (biggest that will fit on my wall)
Beats my current 27" Sony Trinitron from 1995.

Not to thread-jack, but wanted to expand the discussion to post christmas as well.

We're planning on getting some furniture and a T.V. - and can wait until after x-mas, do you think any post x-mas sales will trump black friday deals?

As mentioned by a poster above and on the internet, the Superbowl is one of the other main HDTV discounting deal times of the year.
It is about the most watched event of the year and thus the deals.

Just to add my $.02...

I share miscrms's opinion. If I were in the market for a TV this year, there is enough of a convergence in retailer motivation and technological advances that I'd go get in line for a doorbuster right after I tucked the kids into bed on Thanksgiving. Even if prices are better the weekend before the superbowl, the difference will be negligible and you will have been enjoying your TV for several months.

Of course, if the difference of 10% is large enough to wait, take the risk of waiting until the superbowl sale. In general, the longer you wait for a specific model/gadget/widget, the cheaper it will be until it goes EOL.

Sorry, no trick really. Was lucky enough to find a floor model with ~450 hours on it. Seems like some (maybe all?) Sears are not going to carry the G10s in store anymore, just online. They had it for $999.99, I was able to use my $10 off $75 Sears giftcards from safeway and talked them into giving me the 10% off Sears card discount if I put the small balance on my Sears card and bought an extended warranty (which I'm planning to cancel).

You might check the "outlet" tab on Sears.com to see whats in your area, thats how I found out about this floor model even though it was at a retail store not the outlet.

There is a deal discussion thread where I've been tracking panasonic plasma deals, which I'm still trying to keep up in case something better comes along (seems unlikely though). Panasonic Plasma Deal thread

Good luck!

Rob
