Which of those washer/dryer sets are the better deal? I have about $400 worth of gift cards to use and I'm going to buy a set. I'm guessing the Samsungs?

Actually, probably the Kenmore set for a grand. The Samsung is their one step up from their entry level set, the Kenmore set has a steam washer and traditional dryer from what I can see at quick glance. The Kenmore set is a larger discount. Both are quality units for sure!

Reviews on the Sears site of those Kenmores are hit and miss though.

True but I have found that a lot of reviewers are idiots as well.
Case in point: my front load washer. reviews were about 50/50 on it. The primary complaint about the unit was that it would get a smell. I have had it for over a year and have had no issues. I guess people may not realize that the door has to be left open after use as the door provides a water tight seal and the inside wont dry out unless you have the door at least cracked? Too many people dont know how to read directions....
Sears is crazy! Last week I bought a LG 50PQ30 online and shipped to store with a discounted price of $709.99. I had logged in using Bing to Sears and site said 10% CashBack. During checkout I clicked on special offers and a window popped open that stated I could get 10% off for using Sears Charge or 0% financing for 2 years. Complained why I didn't get the 10% off for using Sears charge to online customer service representative and she gave me the discount after reviewing the sale. Then the final purchase email said I got 5% off under the %5 off electronics offer. Price charged to Sears card $603.49 + Tax of $48.28 or $651.77. They then sent an email on Saturday that I would be issued a discount of $49.51 per my request, which was credited to my Sears charge? Now I'm down to $602.26 including Tax. Now I see a 10% Microsoft Bing CashBack pending of $60.35. So my final cost of the LG 50PQ30 50" Plasma at Sears will be $541.91 with all the discounts and CashBack. Not bad price for complaining a bit!
