The answer to question 2, is no, Apple computers never go on sale. The only ways to get a reduced price are the educational discount, to get a refurbished one from Apple, or to buy one used. I would highly recommend purchasing refurbished from Apple, they do an excellent job with them, they look and work just like brand new. The used market for Apples is like the used market for Hondas and Toyotas, I find the prices people are willing to pay too high. The high resale value is a sign of the quality of the product, but to me it makes purchasing used an unattractive option.

If you're a student, you can get a student discount online at the Apple Store. Otherwise, my suggestion would be to keep an eye out on their refurbished stock, to see if they have what you're looking for.

Do you have an idea of which machine you'd like to purchase? Also, it's not entirely true that they *never go on sale*. Amazon.com puts them on sale from time to time, as does MacMall.com and a few others, but for the most part the price will be the same (just like iPods).

Don't pay for any memory upgrades from Apple, it's always cheaper to install it yourself afterwards.

check Amazon.com, usually no tax depending on state, free shipping, but most importantly they often have rebate offers on apple computers!

WAIT a few days. MacWorld is Jan 15th-18th and there may be new products.

Thank you so much everyone for all the information. I never owned a Mac before so I don't know much about them. I was amazed at all there features when I went into the store the other day. I was looking at the laptop, mac book pro, but the desktop with the really large screen is really nice too. After the Mac Show that someone mentioned, will you be able to purchase the new computers right away? Also is there a difference as far as warranty if I buy one from Amazon rather than from apple? Also is the mac book pro worth buying over the regular mac book?

Thanks!

Fry's had the iMacs on sale once. About 40% off on 1 model. Of course it was only valid at the Fry's in San Jose, CA for one day.

There is a known, but unrecognized by Apple, issue with the iMacs("the desktop with the really large screen") where the screen develops wierd color gradients. It is not a widespread issue but according to Tom's Hardware Apple has not addressed the issue.

If Apple is releasing new products at Macworld then you can expect some prices to drop.
