I was all excited to upgrade my old IBM P4, 1 GB machine with a new Dell Inspiron 6550 Core 2 Duo machine which I upgraded to 3 GB of RAM.

But was disappointed by how LOUD the Dell machine was compared to my very quiet IBM. Then I came across some info that upgrading the BIOS would make the machine quieter.

I went to Dell's website, downloaded and ran the BIOS upgrade, and the machine is amazingly quiet now! I love it!!

I had NO idea a BIOS upgrade Could address the loudness of a machine!

Just curious, how exactly does the BIOS upgrade make the pc quieter? Obviously the new BIOS makes the pc run a different/more efficient way, but what are the major changes?? Dell's website didn't give specifics...

The majority of the machine noise is the cooling fans. The default was probably to have all of the fans running at full speed all of the time. The BIOS update probably added the ability to dynamically adjust the fan speed based on temperatures in the case.

That makes sense. I'm surprised that it wasn't addressed until Version 10 of the BIOS! (My previous version was 7)

I have the same system once ,my system has been on for a while and I shut it off IT WILL COME back on by itself. I have wasted hours on the phone with tech support reloaded the computer NO GOOD I have to shut it down 2 times... Any ideas??

Shut off causing a restart can be caused by several things. Does this only happen when you shut down from a Windows OS using the Shut Down option?

It happens when I go to start on screenclick then choose turn off computer

Most likely cause, if it is just in Windows, is a power setting that is incorrect.

First thing I would try is to boot from a live CD. If power off on that does the same thing then we know there is no reason to mess with Windows settings. Do you have a CD like this? Something like the Ultimate Boot CD would be perfect.

I had the same problem.... put it to hybernation and it came back to life a few minutes later.

After setting the Remote Wake up to OFF in the BIOS (.12), it seemed to have cured this problem.
