Thanks for the news and link. It doesn't look to be of any real value to most non-business users.

Just finished installing it on one of my PCs. Took about 20 minutes with one restart.

The link from the page is:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/svpk/2008/04/windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu_c81472f7eeea2eca421e116cd4c03e2300ebfde4.

which is a MS link.

Just tried on an older xp pro system and it hosed it. Put me into an endless reboot cycle and it won't even boot into safe mood or last known good configuration. In the process of restoring an Acronis image I made two days ago.

Proceed with caution and make sure you have a backup image. One success on my lightly used system and utter failure on a heavily used 5 year old 1.8 GB p4.

Why is there no digital signature?

The link from the page is:

which is a MS link.

but searching downloads in M$ does not bring up this site.
does it mean it is not yet open to public?

For MSDN and TechNet subscribers, XP SP3 was available for download on April 23rd. For non-subscribers (general public), April 29th was the planned released date. (Link)

According to TechNet XP SP3 forum, the release to web (RTW) is currently delayed.

EDIT: From CNet, XP update delayed over glitch. Apparently, it's a "compatibility issue" with XP SP3 and their Dynamics Retail Management System.

I havent installed SP3 yet, but on a friend's build it helped to solve an interesting problem.

With an 8800GT, Asus X38 motherboard, there would be odd nvidia driver issues. After rebooting it would seem to lose the resolution and default to big fonts - like the driver wasnt installed. I googled the issue and others have solved it with SP3. It was quite odd.

Installed it this afternoon. It took awhile (50 minutes and one reboot) on a old Inspirion 8500. For far so good. For some reason my wireless signal has improved and it's not slower than sp2.

Assuming it's not corrupted (it should be 331805736 bytes with an MD5 of BB25707C919DD835A9D9706B5725AF58), then you're seeing a bug in XP. I've seen it myself in an earlier XP SP3 beta, a friend has seen it, and I've seen several reports online.

I had the same problem, there is an issue with gdi32.dll that can be resolved by doing this:

boot from a Windows CD (home, pro, any) and go for the repair option.

type the following:

cd system32

ren gdi32.dll gdi32.old

Copy gdi32.dll c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\gdi32.dll c:\windows\system32\gdi32.dll

type exit, remove cd from drive

reboot as normal.

BrycePGH,

Thanks. After restoring the Acronis image, I put the recovery console on this PC so I at least have something to boot into if this happens again to make the repair. I must have screwed up my slipstreamed sp2 discs because none of them boot and I had to use the recovery console to fix a different PC that had some boot problems after an attempt at creating a drive image from a virtual floppy failed. I'm holding off until sp3 is officially released.

Thanks OP for the link. I downloaded & installed. It's working fine for me with no issues. I am not seeing any major difference between SP2 & SP3. What are the changes microsoft made in this SP3?

I still don't see any difference or need to upgrade with SP3. I contended with all the updates XP is downloading automatically. Not sure whats the fuzz about SP3.
