that is what prompted my note, i was trying to import a mpg file into movie maker but it wouldn't import. I thought it might be because of the mpg file but that is not the case. What I am trying to really do is compress the file and wanted to use movie maker but it's not working now

I dont know what the OP intended but I can give you some information to satisfy your 'curiosity'.

Short and sweet, I think if you put a link for a .wmv file on a website, and, if visitors click on it, the video will automatically open Windows Media Player and begin playing AND buffering at the same time. Whereas a .mpg file is treated as a download.

my camcorder records in mpg when uploaded. I searched previous posts and found something relating to codecs and that allowed windows media player play

MPEG is pretty standard these days and will play in Media Player pretty much out of the box.

MPEG2 is what DVDs use so as long as the person playing has some kind of DVD Software installed, then Media Player can still play back, it will just use the MPEG2 codecs installed. In Vista, MPEG2 is built in so they don't even need 3rd party software.

Not saying you shouldn't convert to Windows Media Video, but just letting you know you prolly don't have to.
If your looking for better compression, use DiVX, XVid or, dare I even say it, Quicktime (I personally hate QT)
