Hello, I have a 6-year-old PC with AGP Video. I am currently running a ATI 9600 video card, which I just "popped" in - no extra power cable. Its run fine for about 4-5 years, but now is sputtering. I was looking to upgrade to a new AGP card, but they seem to need a lot of power now, and I have a stock power supply. I have no plan to upgrade the power supply.

Is there an AGP video card that will just "pop into" my system? I'm hoping to stretch out another couple of years. I do not play games. Just internet/ipod/photo stuff.

Thanks for any help

This card has been going in and out of stock and would be perfect for a non-gamers needs. It can just be "popped in" and does not need any special power requirements. It is also free after rebate.

Again, it says Sold out now, but it seems to come back in stock every day and then go out of stock in the evening - may be the inventory system at frys.com.

If you're near a Fry's, through Tues. they have the EVGA e-GeForce 6200 for free, after $45 rebate (the model 6200LE is the PCI-E version, not on sale).

I'm not entirely convinced a GeForce 6200 would be faster than a Radeon 9600.

Here is a thread on another forum on the topic: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic52999.html
They all agree the 9600 is faster when it comes to GPU power but the 6200 "has more features" which I assume to mean Dynamic Lighting and Hardware T&L or similar GPU features.

Anyway, it looks like you can get a Radeon 2400 without an extra power connector or the next step up is a Radeon HD3650 which has a MOLEX (HD/CD Drive style) power connector but according to a few reviews I scanned through, its pretty light on the power requirements.

GeForce side of the house, anything on AGP above a 6200 seems to require extra power but most of them are the same MOLEX type connector (I think they assume if you have an AGP Board you prolly dont have a Power Supply with PCIe connectors).
Here your best options are the 7300GT, 7600GS and 7600GT

So personally I would pick the Radeon 3650 in that lineup as its the newest card, has gone through a die shrink (55nm = less power required) and you can pick one up for just under $100 if you shop around.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm interested in the Radeon HD3650, but when I looked it up on Newegg, the reviews talked about a tricky install with bad drivers from ATI. That's scaring me away. I'm really looking for an easy install experience. The 6200 doesn't look like much of an upgrade over my ATI 9600. Free is a good price, though.

Any other recommendations for a good AGP video card that's an upgrade from an older ATI 9600, with easy installation? If that HD3650 were easier to install I'd get one of those.
