I'm building a new computer for my dad and it's been a while since i've researched hardware. What would be a few ideas for motherboards to start looking at? This just the typical internet/office stuff. We usually build a new pc every 4-5 years and get a cpu towards the top end, but not the most expensive. I am open to either AMD or Intel. We'll probably put in 2GB RAM. I could use some video suggestions too please, in the $100 range. About the only requirement for video is that it does HDTV out. Thank you for any suggestions!

Honestly for a complete machine you might be better off getting a cheap Dell.

As for HDTV Out, can you be more specific?
Component Video?
DVI?
HDMI?

You can get DVI out with any decent machine or video card these days.
DVI Can be used with an HDMI Adapter for HDMI Video (No Audio)
If you want native HDMI (with sound) or Component Video, you usually need a half way decent aftermarket video card.

High end desktop CPU without breaking the bank that *I* would recommend would be the Q9450 (2nd Gen Quad Core Intel).
If you stick with DDR2 memory, you can get 4GB for $50-$75 so you may as well just max the machine out, even though a 32bit OS will only show you around 3GB available.

As for mobo, if your not doing anything crazy I would say get something based on the Inel P35/P45 or even G35 chipset. X38 or X48 is overkill.
AMD Side would be 780G AMD chipset or new 750a nVidia chipset. Phenom X4 would be the CPU to get.

AMD 780g based motherboards or Intel g35 based motherboards.

Thanks for the replies. I think we've decided on a Gigabyte G35 board ($90) with the E7200 Wolfdale cpu ($135). That will be plenty fast and if in 2 years he decided he needs something faster he can get a quad core for another $135 and still come out ahead. Still deciding on video.

On board video is good enough.
