For years, I've made do with notepad, then later with Works. Over the past few years, I bought Wordperfect Office X3 for 25 bucks or so, but my wife always complained about how nothing I had on the home PC functioned the same as Microsoft Office (in particular, Word) on the computers at her work. Today as she vociferously complained, she showed me some strange things Wordperfect was doing to her margins on her resume, and she was very frustrated at all the little things it seemed to be changing on its own.

I guess I'm going to finally give in and get a copy of Microsoft Office, mostly so she has a recent version of Microsoft Word to use. For my purposes, I'm perfectly happy with the 4.4 Megabyte total size Atlantis Word processor. However, I guess my desire for harmony at home now outweighs my desire to increase competition in the word processing arena. (and to save $100)

So, I'm looking for a good deal on a recent version of Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Office. We will need to install it on 3 computers (2 desktops, and 1 laptop) So far, this appears to be the best deal I can find:

http://www.superdealsoftware.com/product_special_detail.php?s=1&id=211
$131 shipped for a 3 computer license and media, Office 2007 home and student

Can anyone suggest a better deal, or should I pull the trigger on this?

Thanks!

Did you ever try the free software OpenOffice?

And if you are hellbent on getting that MS Office 2007 home and student version it's only $109.99 with free shipping at Amazon.

I've used open office but nothing compares to Excel if you ask me. If you have a kid in school you can look for the educational discounts, I got one from Hot Deals like a year ago for $60

is she having word 2007 at her office too.
because word 2007 makes docx files which can not be opened using word 2003 (unless you use the converter).
get 2003 or even office XP will do the job.

Word 2007 can save in 2003 format, no converter needed.

In 2007, you can save the files as 2003 compliant.

It is for OPs wife and not for experts like you and me.

Is that a joke? That's an option right on the save screen and can even be made into default so as to not have to change it every time.

Buy a Microsoft Action Pack if you have need for more than just 1 copy of Office.

Whats Included

Comes with 10 copies of all the desktop stuff and 1 copy of all the server stuff.
Includes Office 2007 which is what your after but also includes 10 copies of Vista Business edition which is like Home Basic but with some extra features for corporate use. So no Media Center, but has all the other basic Vista features. (Too bad it doesn't include XP anymore)

Anyway, its $299/year, but I dont think there is anything forcing you to renew year after year.

Why didn't you just get one of the free copies Microsoft keeps giving out? The threads pop up on FW all the time. Each copy can be installed on two computers.

Why didnt you invest in Google when they went public?

Hindsight is 20/20, no need to pick on the OP.

I did. Wish I had sold in the $600s though.

As a lover of Word Perfect, I HATE, HATE, HATE M/S Office and am sorry she is determined to use it. Just so you know, Word Perfect can be set up to use a menu system that mimics Office. The thing I love about WP is that is is all-in-one and does so many things that Offices makes you buy multiple programs to do.

Good luck!

P.S. I pasted information about how to do it:

Simulating the Microsoft Word workspace
If you recently switched from Microsoft Word to WordPerfect, you may not be familiar with the WordPerfect workspace. While there are many similarities between the two applications, you may find it easier to simulate the Microsoft Word workspace until you are accustomed to working in WordPerfect. What the Microsoft Word workspace does is position the WordPerfect features, including toolbars and menu items, where you would find the equivalent feature in Microsoft Word. It also applies Microsoft Word keyboard shortcuts to WordPerfect features, allowing you to quickly find the tools you need to create documents in WordPerfect.

For more information about Microsoft Word features and their equivalents in WordPerfect, see "Comparing Microsoft Word and WordPerfect features."

If you prefer to work in the WordPerfect workspace, but you want to access the most common WordPerfect features using Microsoft Word buttons and icons, you can display the Microsoft Word toolbar. In addition, you can display the Microsoft Word Compatibility toolbar, which gives you immediate access to features, such as saving documents to Microsoft Word and publishing to PDF.

The following illustration shows the Compatibility toolbar. .

Might be time to trade in the wife instead of the software program. Maybe I'm too much of a geek, but it baffles me how most women can't adjust to the various word processing software when they use so few of the features anyway. I've had no problem adjusting to various version of Ami pro, Word pro, wordperfect, and Word, among others. What is so difficult?

>What is so difficult?

Well, I watched her change the margins using Wordperfect X3, and it changed the margins on SOME of the paragraphs, but not others. The program acts flaky, even after an uninstall and reinstall. It is like there is some little monkey inside picking and choosing what parts of a page to apply changes to. At this point, after watching it in action, I can understand why it drives my wife crazy. When I used it, it was pretty much to quickly type out a letter and print.

I've used Open Office (openoffice.org) for years. Never needed any of the special features in MS equivalents, and saved myself a lot of money. It can write in Microsoft formats, except those new "open" proprietary ones MS is trying to force on the world...
Open Office uses the real open ones...

The controls and appearance are really similar to MS versions also. So, I am always amazed that the average user still thinks they need MS Office. It's the same mentality that makes people pay a ton for brand names, when the generic is almost exactly the same...
