I have Dell 8200 desktop. Recently, when I boot up, it comes with an error....the windows config file is corrupted. Please insert Dell re-installation CD and perform repair option.

The problem is, when I insert the Dell re-installation CD, the PC cannot boot it up with it.

I am looking to replace the hard drive and wanted to know if I have to buy the HD from Dell or I can buy any HD of the street and then re-install OS.

Thank you in advance.

1: You can buy any hard drive. Make sure it's the right interface and doesn't exceed any size limitations of the computer BIOS.

2: What do you mean the computer can not boot from the CD? Does it have trouble reading the CD when it trys to boot, or does it not even check the CD drive when booting. If the latter, you should be able to go into the BIOS and set the system to boot from CD as the first priority.

3: Dells usually ship with a recovery partition on the hard drive that you can use to restore the system to factory new condition. You get to it by pressing a certain key at boot up. May be more of a PITA than it's worth for that old a system though.

I thought that because Dell uses rails, I cannot use other outside Hard drives as the holes will not match.

Yes. It gives the error as non disk error. Basically, just does not boot up fro it.

Please post the data requested in the 3rd sticky

Press F12 to get the boot menu then choose CD (should be option 4 or 5) - which key to press is displayed on your screen, usually in the upper right, for about 2 seconds when you first power up.

Most Dell machines also have a drive diagnostic on that same screen - you should probably do that first, to see if the drive is bad. If the test passes, then go ahead with the CD boot.

Of course, this is all assuming you want to wipe everything (losing all data) and start over.

^^ OP indicated he would try the Repair option from the Dell Windows install CD. *If* that works and *if* the drive is not damaged, nothing *should* be lost. Any other approach and likely all is gone.

Fingers crossed for OP.

OP never said anything about a repair. The post says re install, which I took to mean a total re install.

If repair was meant, then yes, after a drive diag, a repair install would not lose data.

I assumed that's what he would do if he could get the PC to boot from the CD. So maybe there's hope to keep the data.

Apparently I only read the part of the post that I felt like reading.
