Sites seem to know who I am before I sign on... how's that?

For instance: Staples shows my recent orders in the right side of their home page and the button to log in shows, eBay shows I have one alert and the button to sign in shows. Other sites have information about me showing before I log in.

I've cleared cookies, history, cache, run ccleaner, AVG and Spybot.

How can I surf anonymously? Not that I need to be anonymous, but the thought of places knowing personally who I am without logging in in disconcerting.

Am using FF 3.0, latest update, and set to clear all personal data except passwords when closing.

Help appreciated.

Version 3 reinstated the option to disable third party cookies. While I'm not sure that's your problem here, you should disable them anyway. It keeps many of the tracking companies from following you around.

It was set no to accept third party cookies, and to delete all cookies when FF closes.

Here's a small Staples screenshot JPG showing my recent purchases in the lower left corner with the log on button showing at the top of the page. I simply go to Staples site, and the purchase information shows. Doesn't happen with IE.

Have you verified that the cookies are actually being deleted when you close FireFox?

No, I didn't verify it.

But I just did and man, it was chuck full. Problem solved. Thank you.

Shouldn't the setting "clear private data" with all options checked except passwords clear all cookies?

Options> privacy> cookies. under cookies high light keep cookies till I close FF and it will always clear the cookies when you close.
