I want to give my girlfriend a promise ring; we've been together for 9 months and I know one day I'm going to marry her, but I don't have the cash or credit for an engagement ring yet. I've been looking around but don't know where I can get the best deal. I want something simple, white gold likely, one or more hearts on it, under $150 if possible.
If you're looking for something that looks nice, and aren't concerned about durability or longevity, Kohl's usually has pretty good stuff in their stores if you wait for their sales. I wouldn't buy a wedding ring there, but if you're looking for a promise ring to last until you propose you can get quite a bit for your money.
I admire your commitment and I agree with jwardi. ICE.com is a nice site where you can start to look at. But if you want to visit a store, I prefer Kay Jewelery than Zales. Please let me know how it goes. Cheers
Me being the true FW'er I am, I absolutely refuse to pay the 300+% markup at jewelry stores and will always shop at the pawn shop before I go anywhere else. They usually have a nice selection, you can always dicker on the price, and you can have a ring polished and it will look like new. You should be able to get a very nice ring in your price range.
This is my absolute favorite ring which I think your girlfriend would love. It's actually two separate rings, one yellow gold and one silver, that are attached to form a "lover's knot." It's a little above your price range since it costs $229 but it's very high quality and the value won't go down since it's handmade by James Avery. I also love it because it's so versatile. I can wear it with yellow gold, white gold, or silver jewelry.
If you really can't afford this one, then you can buy a similar sterling silver lovers knot ring for only $49. I like this better than a promise ring with a very small diamond or with hearts. It's unique.

If you love her that much, just ask her. If she feels the same way, she doesn't need any stupid rings from you.

HINT: This advice is actually for all of you guys out there looking for an excellent gift for your wife or girlfriend. Another vote for James Avery. The workmanship and quality of their jewelry is great and they stand behind their products (I dropped a ring in the garbage disposal that they exchanged for me for a modest fee).
I third James Avery (if the pawn shop doesn't work out, of course). I grew up near them in the Texas Hill Country and their work is of the highest quality and has always been unique and special.
wait for a sale on kolhs though. if you have a Kohls cc, you can get 30% off sometimes. gold has such a huge markup though. so, i agree to look at the 2nd hand market.
