Do you have the Sprint insurance? I have gone through 3 HTC TP2s due to hardware malfunctions and my wife has gone though 4. The insurance plan has saved our bacon each time... reply quote top bottom

I do have the insurance with Sprint. However, My TP2 has been very strong. It survived a cycle in my washing machine (at least one hour) and several accidental drops. As to the washing incident, I have it dried for a night and used it next morning. There were water bubbles inside the screen. The bubbles eventually went away. It worked just normal without any sign of water damage.

So I do have insurance, however, never use it.

The moment you washed it you should've cancelled Insurance. The Wet detector is red inside and the insurance is void.

I was under the impression that water damage negates the manufacturer's warranty but that TEP covers water damage.

TEP covers water damage, but there is a $100 deductible.

I am on the Sero $30 plan and i dont want to cahge the plan. My contract is about to end so i can get the $150 upgrade... I was planning to get the iPhone 4s without upgrading the plan, then sell the iPhone on eBay and get the tp2 which will work for the $30 plan.... Does any one see a problem in doing this?
The only thing is if i can go to the Sprint website and order the iPhone $199 without upgrading ..

is there a consensus on the best phone to not pay any of the $10 upgrades? is it the TP2? I have a samsung intrepid and need a new phone. What about non-4g upgrade, so just an extra $10?

Thanks in advance.

The consensus is that Sprint is trash, and couldn't care less about their longtime customers. We are treated the same as new subscribers. I'm making it my mission to screw Sprint anyway I can. And yes, the POS TP2 is the best you can get w/o paying more.

Find me a new customer that can get brand new iphone for $200 and pay $50/month.. on any network.. and I'll give you a million dollars.

I should have been more clear. As a Fair & Flexible family legacy plan holder, we get uniquely screwed. For me and other legacy plan holders, it's TP2 or the highway. We don't even have the option of paying more for a phone that's decent. Screw Sprint for life.

For those reading this, PLEASE do not listen to store clerks, who have no idea what they are talking about. SERO-Premium is alive and well but stores, particularly Sprint franchises, don't know how to work it. Just speak with customer service, most of whom know how to effectuate a conversion -- the conversion takes about 1 minute.

Don't hold your breath on Sprint and Windows Phone...I'm not sure why they even released the Arrive (which my wife has and loves, btw). They don't seem to have any interest in marketing the phone and have basically avoided advertising for it in other ways. I would gladly pay $50 per month for a high-end Windows Phone, but I doubt we will ever see one on Sprint.

(Edit to say I do see the report you're talking about...I still wouldn't hold my breath. I am rocking the Treo Pro right now and have been waiting for a slab Windows Phone since the Arrive came out. I'm still waiting.)

I've been using the Hero on a $40 sero FF premium plan for about a year and a half now - and though it took some leg work (like dealing with Sprint customer service always does) i got my parents both upgraded to Motorola Admirals this christmas. They'd been on $30 sero plans with very aged flip phones for some time.

The trick is - when you call in to order the phone (they told me that there was a recent change, and Sprint now AGAIN doesnt let sero users buy from corporate stores...) get them to notate your account that you verified with them that the phone only requires the $10 upgrade to the Sero FF 500 Premium - and NOT the additional $10 data add-on. Be sure to have them do this - because when you call back to activate - you can get the run around. I have it on good authority (after 7 calls / visits to stores) that the official policy is that a $40 sero premium plan is all you need for ANY 3G smart phone with the exception of iphones. If they tell you otherwise when you call to upgrade - ask for the policy number or internal memo id where this policy is published. They wont be able to find it - and eventually, they'll agree that its any 3G phone but the iphone.

The Admiral is nice and rugged - has android 2.3 (gingerbread), touch screen, a blackberry style keyboard, and push-to-talk (if that matters to you). The interface was a LITTLE different then im used to with my HTC, but given that I know it can be done, I might have to just go with the Admiral when I upgrade mine.

My only issue with my hero is that its getting kinda slow and lags a bit. I think its just because its getting up there in age.

1 Question.

I'm currently on SERO-P for $40/mo. I have a $150 upgrade credit but don't want to change phones or plans, just extend my contract 2 years.

Does Sprint change/alter your plan to include premium data when you order the phone or when you activate the phone? I'm going to sell the phone I get with the upgrade credit, but if they add the $10 premium data to my plan because I ordered one, I'd be PO.

Anybody done this recently? Thanks

Unless things have changed since I did it in November, the extra $10 (beyond the $40 SERO-P) comes at activation.

I have to agree. I went to a corporate store (franchise?) I got an new iPhone 4S sent to me by a SERO customer service agent. When I went to the store to have my contacts moved over and the phone activated, the clerk AND the manager had NO clue. Even though I showed them an email from the SERO person stating that I could stay on the SERO plan, they insisted that I had to change plans. I was quite p-ed off, when home, called the SERO people and they apologized. I ended up getting some credit for the hassle.

Upgraded my SERO 500 to the $40 SERO-P a week or 2 ago....I picked up a Marquee cheap on eBay with a couple months untill the renewal credit comes up. Did this for 2 reasons...1) itching to move up to a smart phone, and 2) already being familiar with IOS with the ipad, figured I would get something cheap to give Android a good workout to see which way I want to go with my upgrade credit. I figured I would save the credit for iPhone 5 when it comes out vs settling on a 4S, or if I stick with Android (which looks likely at this point), I will get some latest and greatest later on in the year with LTE, and hopefully some significant strides with battery life. Anyhow, did the plan upgrade and ESN swap via web chat. It was quick and easy with no issues at all. Everything is now reflected propperly when viewing my account info with no shenanigans like activation fee or other billing errors snuck in, losing renewal credit date, etc.

Those wondering about the Marquee, here are my thoughts...

Yes, I read the reviews for this phone...some 10/10 for what it is, others really bad, and everything else in between. My expectations were as follows...expected poor battery life but hoped it would be at least adequate...expected plasticy cheap feeling phone...and expected OK performance from it. To elaborate on that last point, my reasoning is despite having a single core slower processor and less ram compared to CURRENT HIGH END android phones, it's specs arent bad at all compared to ALL Android phones that are capable of running gingerbread.

Now that I have had it for a bit, here is how I personally rate some of the common complaints...

1) Build quality...it's no iPhone or better HTC phone, but its not bad. Residing in it's silicone case I got for it, I dont think it would matter if it was the cheapest or most expensive feeling phone around as it would probably feel the exact same with the case on.

2) Battery life...Completely stock, yes, it is bad, miserably so. Talking about like half a day even with relatively light use. Using only what is available to you stock like turning down screen brightness as low as possible, keeping bluetooth off, etc def helped some, but still very poor overall. HOWEVER, with Juice Defender ultimate installed, all the sudden I can easily go all day with reasonable use, and do so with the auto-brightness setting which results in a nice looking screen rather then just set it for min, and even leave some of the auto-synching and stuff on. I was rather skeptical of these power saving apps, but at least for me it made a HUGE night and day difference.

3)Processing power...Phone was initially pretty slow feeling at first, then suddenly became fine. It's almost like there is a settling in period while everything is getting cached and stuff upon initial use. After that first day, or first hours more like, no complaints in this department as well.

Overall I feel it is def worth a shot if you like to tweak your phone at all. I say this because while battery life is poor by default, it is possible to improve it greatly with a little work, but if you dont want to mess with your phone much at all, battery life probably will be just too poor. I like that this phone isnt completely run down with Sprint customizations and apps like so many phones are. There are a few Sprint things on it, but not much and nothing really intrusive. Turned out to be a pretty OK phone despite some of the horror stories.

When my trusty TP2 developed an acute case of endless boot loopitis I found myself looking for a new phone. Unfortunately, Phoenix has been blessed by God, but forsaken by Sprint's 4G rollouts. I had to upgrade to SERO-P to get a smartphone but I object to paying an extra $10/mo. for 4G in an area where it isn't available. I had a hard time deciding between the Marquee and the XPRT. In February the XPRT was on sale for $0 (no rebates) with a new contract. I figured if I wasn't happy after a day or two I could just exchange it for the Marquee.

1. Build quality. It's a solid phone with Gorilla Glass and a very responsive keyboard. The XPRT is Sprint's version of the Droid Pro. Fortunately, Motorola upgraded the backplate on the XPRT after feedback that it felt cheap on the Pro. The phone has a good feel in the hand. It's slightly heavy, but has a good shape and the backplate has a slightly rubbery feel so it won't slip out of your hand easily.

2. Screen. The screen is low-res compared to the newer phones and is only 3.1" to make room for the keyboard. The colors seem faded and the screen can be difficult to see in bright sunlight. The low-res screen looks fine though and 3.1" is enough to watch videos and play most games. I wouldn't use it to play a FPS game though.

3. Battery life. I got the free version of Juice Defender and made no changes to the stock settings. I can easily get 3 days of light use before recharging. The small, low-res screen and modest processor have a lot to do with the great battery life.

4. Processing power. Motorola used a lite version of Motoblur on the XPRT that works great with the processor. I haven't noticed any stuttering and can watch videos and play games without difficulty.

5. Radio. This is a shock and awe feature that doesn't get enough coverage. Over the years I've had two HTC phones and a Palm on Sprint. I've learned that there are places in my house or my drive home from work where Sprint's signal is weak and calls get dropped. I quickly unlearned the dead zones with the XPRT. Motorola builds an excellent radio and I haven't dropped a call yet. There are several places where I couldn't get a signal with the other phones where I can get two bars with the XPRT. The call quality is a huge step up from the other phones as well. Calls are almost as clear as a land line.

If you use your phone primarily to make and receive calls, don't see the point in having a cordless phone that needs to be constantly plugged into a charger and want some entertainment when you get stranded in an airport for a few hours - the XPRT is the phone for you. If you use your phone primarily as a gaming device, think your phone's battery is there to save you having to reboot your phone when you get to the next charging cable and use a land line to make and receive calls you probably want something else.

MS will shutdown Windows Marketplace for mobile 6.x on May 9. so TP2 users, You need to download all apps before then.

MS does not have a good track record of backward support... no upgrade from 6.5 to phone 7, not from phone 7 to phone 8... Not a big issue as the hardware changes so fast..

You may be waiting a long time. Sprint is only rolling out 15 LTE devices this year. Out of the 15 LTE slots, 3 are still open but there's only 1 device from HTC (Jewel) and none announced from Motorola. Both manufacturers have confirmed that they will be building phones and tablets for Sprint's new LTE network. My guess would be another HTC phone with an ATRIX 2 clone and a Xyboard from Motorola. Any Winphone will either be non-LTE or a 2013 model.

Formally announced (3):
LG Viper
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Sierra Wireless Tri-Network Hotspot

Known, unannounced devices (3):
Samsung SPH-L710 (Samsung Galaxy S2 HD LTE)
HTC Jewel
iPad3

Rumored, likely devices (6):
Samsung Galaxy Note
Samsung Galaxy S3
iPhone 5
Blackberry Curve
Blackberry Bold
Blackberry Torch

Pick any 3:
Tablets - Motorola Xyboard, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Blackberry Playbook LTE
LTE hotspot - It seems unlikely that Sprint would have only one.
HTC phone
Motorola phone

Just had another Sprint phone officially launch today, ZTE Fury. Looks like a typical inexpensive Android (Gingerbread) phone, appears to be 3G only. Might be good for SERO, or is that loophole permanently closed?

rated:

The loophole is permanently changing. There was a time Android phones weren't allowed on SERO. In recent history:

As of 11/07/11:

The premium data fee for SERO (the extra $10 above SERO-P) currently applies to all 4G handsets and the iPhone.

As of 1/09/12:

All 4G smartphones and these 3G smartphones will also require $10 add-on: iPhone, Samsung Transform Ultra, Express from Sprint

As of 1/26/12:

...all 4G smartphones and all smartphones launched after 10/4/11 such as the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, Samsung Transform Ultra, Express from Sprint, and Motorola Admiral.

The last time I checked:

No 4G phones
No iPhones
No phones launched on Sprint after 10/04/11

Sprint is using SERO as a place to dump older and less desirable phones. By restricting SERO plans to only allow certain phones they can guarantee some demand for those phones. You won't find a TP2 at the Sprint store, but it's still available on the everythingplus store. I wouldn't be surprised to see the WiMax phones move to SERO in the next year now that Sprint has granted them betamax status.

Buy a SERO plan off eBay. I've been round and round on this with Sprint and they are consistent in their stupidity and will not activate another smart phone on an old F&C plan unless it is the exact same device type and the new device is a result of an insurance claim. You *may* have some luck converting your plan, but it looks like the only ones who have had that success have indeed had a SERO plan at some point.

Good luck. If you somehow, someway get this accomplished, please let me know!

I'm on a F&C with 900 minutes shared across 2 lines (N&W at 7 pm, Unlimited M2M, unlimited 1st incoming minutes free) for $70/month +tax. One has the EVO data plan (touch 9600) and the other is standard flip phone. Sprint is "offering" to upgrade the flip to Iphone4S by switching that line to a $69 plan total (so i'm not sure if it's $59 +$10 data or the unlimited data plan at $69 but was quoted $69 all included --actually $62 after corp discount for 450 minutes). They will leave the other line on the F&C plan as is including EVO for $30 but with only 350 minutes.

I've been holding on this plan for 15y but barely using one line nowadays:

-Option 1: Sale F&C plan for two lines as is for $?
-Option 2: Take the "upgrade" and convert my $70 F&C for 2 lines (900 minutes shared) to a single line with 350 minutes for $30 including EVO.
-Option 3: Do nothing and hold on longer to see what's can be done with Iphone5 and Win8.

What do you guys think will be the best approach?

I wanted to upgrade my $30 plan to use iphone 4s. Sprint telesales told me that I will be able to do so with additional $20 increase in my monthly plan. I was told I have sero advantage plan and I have to upgrade to premium plan. So I ordered an iphone 4s and it arrived 2 days ago. I have been trying to activate the phone and not very successful.

I called Sprint e-care line many times talked to different customer service rep and they all told me that SERO-P is no longer available and the only plan I can upgrade to is "sero everything plus" which is $69.99 for iphone. They told me that I'm on "Network Advantage SERO Fair and Flexible" plan and this plan is not eligible to upgrade to SERO-P. So I'm kinda stuck. Ofcourse it was my mistake to order the phone first without upgrading the line. I'm told to return the iphone and keep $30 plan.

Please let me know if you had "Network Advantage SERO F&F" and able to upgrade to SERO-P or if you have SERO-P and want to go back to $30 plan.. may be we may be able to switch?

Thanks!

You've told us what you have and what Sprint offered you, but what needs do you have that aren't being met with the deal you have now? Are you fruitphone curious? How many minutes are you using now? You've mentioned two options that are on opposite ends of the spectrum (cheapest plan for talking minutes vs. high-end smartphone plan) so it's difficult to give you advice.

If you're sure you won't need the next line you should attempt a SERO conversion. You can get 500 minutes, N&W at7, unlimited M2M and all the perks you have now for $30/mo.+jf&t AND you can change to other SERO plans AT WILL. Want a mid-level smartphone (XPRT, Marquee)? $40/mo.+jf&t Want a fruitphone? $50/mo.+jf&t See the link in the post prior to yours in this thread for details.

The best deals for service if you don't need 4G are at MVNOs. No contracts and few of the junk fees and taxes post-paid plans incur. You have to buy your own phone (no phone subsidy) but it's not that hard to find a deal on a slightly older phone from a reputable dealer.

For the cheapest service consider Page Plus. You can buy their 1,000 minute plan and get 4 months of service for $50. The minutes don't expire for 120 days.

4 months on your F&C plan = 4*$30 = $120
4 months on the Page Plus plan = $50

If you want a fruitphone and your SERO conversion fails, consider Platinum Tel. They'll activate any Sprint phone (like an iPhone 4S) and you can get unlimited talk, text and 200mb of data for $50/mo.

1. Call 1-888-603-7981, tell them you want to convert your plan to SERO premium. DO NOT call regular customer service - they can't convert SERO accounts.
2. Activate your phone here.

We both get this line thru one of our friend but our plan are not the same. Customer rep said my sister had "Sprint Employee Referral Fair and Flexible" before she converted to SERO-P. My plan is different and so they cant convert.

Your final saving throw is to ask for divine intervention. Explain your situation to Russ McGuire (Sprint vice-president who for some reason has chosen to be merciful to SERO customers). DO NOT mention your sister's plan. Be advised:

From now on, when I get questions, if they don’t start with “I’ve contacted employee care, but…” then I’m going to respond with “Have you contacted employee care?”

russ.s.mcguire@Sprint.com

If that fails you can try the Platinum Tel solution I laid out for LIVEWALLET.

The last smartphone to avoid the smartphone tax was the Replenish - which DOES have android and just got a gingerbread upgrade in January. You can still get the Touch Pro 2 also. The, "wait for another employee" strategy works a lot better on the 4G tax than the smartphone tax.

The last smartphone to avoid the smartphone tax was the Replenish - which DOES have android and just got a gingerbread upgrade in January. You can still get the Touch Pro 2 also. The, "wait for another employee" strategy works a lot better on the 4G tax than the smartphone tax.

I just checked out the Replenish on Sprint's website, and like almost all of the most recent 20 or so reviews are majorly negative about the phone freezing up all the time. What are your thoughts on that? You're obviously happy with it, so I'm just checking.
