Samsung Refrigerator Issues

I bought a samsung Refrigerator from Costco in mid 2005. Its worked great until last year. There were water all over my floor. we had a PSEG plan "Worry free plan"( this had been worry some) and the guys somehow fixed it first time, although it took long time for him. After 2 month the issue happened again and the subsequent Tech from PSEG and their supervisor are saying its a known issue with the Samsung and are asking just look online for some posting to find the issues and follow up by Samsung to resolve. Samsung need details of these reports from PSEG and PSEG is refusing to give it to Samsung and we are stranded in between. My wife spent countless hours cleaning up and also on phone with these two agencies. The Refrigerator even fails to cool now and restart the Refrigerator seems to work. What action can I follow
- take it back to Costco its almost 7 yrs since i bought and when i bought i was told by the Costco guys that you can return anytime.
- Wait for resolution between Samsung and PSEG
- buy a new fridge and keep the old one. Not too happy about this as Refrigerator is expected to last at least 15 yrs( according to PSEG).
- Sue samsung for floor/food/time/replacement damage .

Samsung seems to have the worst in Refrigerator in market now even thought they look fancy.

Does your PSEG plan have an allowance for food replacement? Some extended warranties offer this.

Return to costco, its a products liability issue.
Costco has special agreements with its vendors and will be able to negotiate something with samsug that you could not do without suing.


Also, if this was something Costco delivered for you, they will pick it up (as a rule). Recommend calling whichever Costco outlet you purchased from (store, online, etc.) and explaining the problem.


Should have bought a Honda, Toyota, or Apple fridge instead.


I second the idea of contacting Costco.

Try the forums at places like FixItNow.com and ApplianceAid.com. You may be able to get a factory repair manual by looking around ApplianceJunk.com

The refrigerator doesn't cool, but it works???

If either the refrigerator or freezer compartment gets even slightly colder than the room, I'd try disconnecting the power to the defrost coil (unplug the refrigerator first). If that helps, then the defrost controller or some cable or sensor connected to it is bad, and replacement can be a DIY job.

PSEG seems to have completely incompetent technicians.

Stick with refrigerators made by Whirlpool, whether they're sold under that brand name or Sears Kenmore (not all Kenmores are by Whirlpool), Kelvinator, Roper, or Costco Kirkland.


I don't like Samsung also. Almost all their products are not that good. That is base on my experience.

Infact we called Costco and was told that they take it upto 3 yr. After that they need manager permission and had asked us to contact Samsung.


I would take half the purchase price of the fridge. Will the plan guys settle this with you and be done?


Get manager permission then. The person on the phone or at the counter can't make the decision you want.

Sounds like a relay going bad. Had the same issue with another brand. I replaced the relay and no problem since.


I had a samsung product that failed. It was purchased at Costco. My initial calls to Samsung were full of fail. I contacted Costco and told them the problem. After the call to Costco, Samsung changed their tune and was willing to repair the problem.


I had a Samsung that was a piece of crap, had it fixed twice then replaced through best buy. POS.


I too will never buy Samsung products again. Had ptroblems with washer, customer service only gave runaround. Finally, Lowes replaced it.


Why fix it? You paid a premium for costco's return policy, utilize it. You can then get another refrigerator that has all the latest gimmicks.

Should have bought a used Fridge Police Interceptor. It's got a cop evaporator fan motor, 3000 RPM, cop door handles, cop defrost timers. It's a model made before freon bans so it'll run good for years.

What did Costco say when you went to the store and discussed the issue with the manager of Customer Service?

Some appliance companies are really careless about the design of their electronics, and it wouldn't surprise me if a software bug is involved here (just like with some Samsung hard disk drives). But I wouldn't rule out bad soldering, especially for heavy components or cable connectors (do not attempt the trendy remedy of baking the circuit board in an oven to remelt the solder -- very risky).

Thanks for the warning OP. With all of the complaints about Samsung refrigerators, how is it that JD Power and consumer reports magazine keeps giving them top rating over other brands? Are there any quality and reliable brands out there today? My last refrigerator, a Frigidaire recently quit working after 14 years. I have been warned not to buy another Frigidaire. BTW, my friend has a Maytag that is 26 years old, I feel cheated.


Refrigerator today just aren't built to last as long as past generations. My sister has an avocado green refrigerator that's still going strong. Want to venture a guess when it was built?

I had a refrigerator die on my around 7 years. I spent some time and $25 changing out a relay and though it fixed the problem, but the compress was going bad and causing the new relay to fail again. And of course, the compressor only carried a 5 year warranty.

I no longer consider refrigerators durable goods. On the plus side, with energy efficiency utility rebates and reduced electricity costs take a little from the bite of a new fridge. The fridge I replaced was already energy star rated, but the replacement fridge was expected to cut costs down another $20 a year.

But your sister may benefit from a newer refrigerator because old ones, even those made in the 1990s, probably each use $200 worth of energy a year, compared to $40-75 for a current one. There are decent Whirlpool-made models for $600-800.


Costco came back on the email and now says we need to call samsung and their tech to look at it before they can do anything about it.
They say they don't believe PSEG.
What about the policy of 100% satisfaction and return anytime at Costco?


They are right,their technician must visit the refrigerator first and will look at the problem if any, and would then decide if it comes under their warranty terms or not.


I think the available lot is of sub standard and out of the worst, we have to select the bad so Samsung is the only choice left with us. I am using samsung for the last 3 years but I think its satisfactory till now.

Had a make multiple calls just to schedule and appointment and they didn't turn even with the appointment until Costco got involved. I am pretty happy with the way the Costco dealt with the issue but extremely unhappy with Samsung.
BTW : Refrigerator has died and lost lots of food when we were back from vacation. The freezer is working fine.

What do guys think? Is this a satisfactory resolution?
