I'm moving and need to get rid of a very old but working PC with CRT monitor and inkjet printer. Does anyone know where can I get them recycled for free or some store will give you a fixed trade-in value with purchase? Thanks!

this. however they do have a limit as to how much they accept per customer. at least my best buy did. theyre pretty good about taking just about everything though, might just have to make a few trips depending what all you have.
Thanks. This is a useful thread for me too. In the past I took an old desktop PC to a local recycling center and they charged me $20. More recently, I took it to a local universities' recycling center (in silicon valley) and they took care of it for free, no hassle.
I'm no longer affiliated with that school anymore and I'm planning on rebuilding my desktop in the near future so I was debating what I should do. Didn't realize Staples/BB did free electronic recycling.
Did you know? In 2011, Staples U.S. customers recycled more than 67 million ink and toner cartridges. Our goal is to recycle 100 million each year, globally, by 2020.
I think the FW community deserves some credit here.

Green Century does free recycling if you drop off the items yourself and have locations in OR, WA, and UT: http://www.greencenturyonline.net/ I've been to the OR warehouse and it's hassle free (they have a small shop too)

They don't take them anymore.
Try a local electronic recycling event or store.
Goodwill does.

FWIW my local Staples would not recycle anything for free. Best Buy was no questions asked, they even took my printer that ink had leaked all over/into.
Drive to 1600 PA Avenue, Washington DC. Take items in the portico entrance and the Secretary of Green Voters will be happy to accept them.

If it works then set a price of $25 on craigslist. I bet someone will negotiate to get it for $10.

And then get a police report and write it off as a $100 theft loss!

Try a local electronic recycling event or store.I don't know about the Salvation Army, but Goodwill stores here will take CRTs only if they're part of a complete working computer system. They still take partly gutted desktops because a few months ago I saw one with no case cover but just a power supply, motherboard, and socket A CPU for an overpriced $35. (too bad because the motherboard was rebuilt with about 20 new capacitors)

I never see computers in our GW shops, but I must correct myself as they do take them if your store does, Simply take your unwanted electronics — any brand, any condition — to a participating Goodwill store or donation drop-off site.
In Calif we pay a E-waste fee when we buy something, so they do not charge to recycle it, or they can't anyway, as it's already been paid for in theory.

FYI: ALL manned Goodwill donation centers in the US will accept computer donations as part of Dell Reconnect recycling. There is never a fee to recycle a computer at Goodwill regardless of the state you donate and/or age of the computer equipment. However as you noticed not all Goodwill stores offer donated computers for sale. Dell Recomnnect has strict rules on what can be resold so usually only one Goodwill retail store in each district will be setup to proces donated computers for resell. For example the hard drive de-banding (magnetic erase) machine Dell requires cost around 5K for each Goodwill location due to costs most of the computer equipment collected under Dell Reconnect by Goodwill is instead sent to a cental store in the district and then sorted. Anything not qualified to be resold under Dell Reconnect's guilelines is then broken down and recycled at Dell's expense by individuals who otherwise would not be employable.

Put it in a box, wrap it up as a present, and leave it in your unlocked car in youth territory.
