I'm considering purchasing either of the two below as a gift from MacMall using 2.5% FatCash from FW and a 5% CashBack citi card. The person will primarily be using it to take notes.
Which of the two would you guys go with? The new processor is faster, but I doubt they'd notice or care. The extra memory would be a good thing to have for sure.

For taking notes, it won't really matter. If it were me, I would get the one with the larger hard drive.

I agree, no material difference. the extra storage would be much more useful that the faster processor.

id personally go with at least 128GB of storage. If i need more space, an external will do justice. Speeds aren't that noticeable unless you are doing some heavy app usage.

I would get the new macbook air even with the smaller ssd, you can add a smaller usb flash drive (sticks out 1/4 inch). Notes do not take up much space. You get the new OS when available for free and there is the new USB 3 port and faster graphics. The older model should be much less expensive for me to consider it. If I were to get an older model, I would look at a refurbish unit.

Thunderbolt is twice as fast as USB 3.0, but only useful if someone is making a product that utilize it.
If you are planning on playing games that requires a higher video power, then the Intel HD 4000 is a good pick. Graphic power of the Intel HD 4000 is almost twice the performance of the Intel HD 3000. For an average user 64gb SSD is enough. If you need extra storage then get an external hard drive or a USB thumb drive.
IMHO, I would pick the 2012 model for the video power and also better resale value.

you cant justify buying an older model for almost the same price just cuz it has an extra 64 GB of hard drive space. new model is a current/relevant b able to upgrade to mountain lion and with looking forward into today/tomorrow, cloud storage will be great.
save the notes to comp. (when in WiFi) upload / download files from the cloud
and you can also get a thumb drive for a few bucks.
your real question should really be if you should spend the extra money to get the 13"
also to get a good price find a authorized dealer that doesn't charge sales tax
