I used to have this service from PayPal and loved it... till it got discontinued. Any suggestions where to get a virtual credit card number service?
Thanks!

I would like to know this too. I used Discover for this, but they also discontinued the service.

Citi Virtual Account numbers

Discover has resumed this service. Just log into your Discover Card account, and you'll see the link on the bottom. Also, the downside is if you use virtual number to order things which shipped to store, most retailers now ask you to present the same credit card which you used to purchase with. This could potentially be a problem since the numbers don't match.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of this.

This is also called a one-time use or secure online account number. The link is
One Time Use CC

Be wary with Discover virtual card numbers.

  • When do secure account numbers expire?

Secure account numbers always expire on the same date as your actual Discover Card account number. When your Discover Card is reissued with a new expiration date, it will be necessary to update the expiration information on any retailer's Web site where you have stored your actual card number or any secure account numbers.

Therefore, it's only a ONE time use number, if you call Discover, and cancel the virtual number. I would recommend Citi and BoA every time.

With Discover, the virtual number is valid for use at that one merchant only. Also, it is valid as long as your regular account number is - unless you call Discover to cancel it. Be aware that you will have a real problem after canceling it if the merchant has to issue a refund in the future - the account number you canceled won't accept the credit. Of course, if you anticipate making additional purchases (or returns) at that particular merchant, it's a good idea to leave it valid.

I use the Discover secure number generator for almost all my web purchases. If any fraudulent use shows up you could immediately pinpoint the source since I generate a new number for each transaction.

I did have to settle for a store credit on a web return at Kohls though since I couldn't provide a card with the # used on the web receipt. I probably could have asked for a manager and argued for a credit, but it wasn't a huge deal.

eh? How is this a "ONE time use number"? (regardless of credit card, if you call the CC company and cancel the card (virtual or 'real'), of course it is going to stop further use. As msrazzle explained, you can continue to use the same virtual card# at the same merchant till the virtual card's expiration date (which happens to be the same as your "real" card's expiration date.

In contrast, Bank of america offers a shopsafe service - but gives you a little more flexibility. When creating a virtual CC#, it lets you pick whether it is for one time or recurring (same merchant though), and how long it should be valid for (maximum validity is the same as your 'real' card's expiration date, minimum 2 months).

I get better perks with discover (compared to BOA), so I stick to using Discover most of the time.

Bank Of America offers this on credit cards. You can specify the credit limit and they expire by default in 2 months but you can change that. They also give you control over raising the limit or closing the number. I use this often

just get the AMEX prepaid card and reload as needed

Shopsafe’s online merchant specific unique card number generation services is not the same as the typical one-time merchant virtual CCs offered from other merchant banks . BOA program is the exception and not the rule. Most virtual CCs have their own expiration date independent of the expiration date on the physical credit card. For example the Cii virtual account number program, like most virtual CC program generators, always expire within 30 days of the current billing cycle so the max expiration is generally 60 days depending on which day in your billing cycle you request a virtual CC. However even those virtual CCs can and often do have additional amounts authorized and subsequently charged beyond the original transaction amount and beyond the expiration date without consent from the cardholder. As long as the merchant posted the initial authorization before the virtual CC expiration date they can post additional charges. Also despite popular belief, Virtual CCs offer no real protection against merchant fraud. Even with a Virtual CC the merchant ALWAYS has access to your real CC number in their merchant bank reconciliation reports. The only protection virtual CCs really offer is protection from those third parties who hack online retailers and steal un-reconciled credit card transaction information from their servers.

^^ Agreed. That is the only reason I use virtual CCs. With all the hacks that are happening nowadays, I'd rather not have to worry about this, and have to get a new CC issued when that happens. Merchant "fraud" is easier to deal with. A simple chargeback resolves that.

So beautifully explained cnIsfg. Some punters NEVER want another charge on that virtual number EVER again..!! Each to their own.....
That's the way i like it....(as the song goes).

I don't believe any chargeback is 'simple'.......Especially with Discover.
