FATWALLET - Target Clearance Guide*

*Applies ONLY to a ' Target ' Brick & Mortar Retail Store

An all inclusive guide for my FATwallet friends ( what can I say - slow week )
I have attempted to include legitimate and factual comments.
If you feel I have made an error or have something to add please PM me.

I created this post with the hopes that it would reduce the amount of fluff in Regular Weekly Target Thread Deal Post.

Attention: All FATwallet Members
Feel free to link to this thread for any other Posts.

Special Thanks to FATwallet member "NoOneHere" for some additional info.

------- The Essentials -------
Who:
Anyone with Cash, Check, ATM Card or Credit Card
Credit Cards Accepted:
Target Visa - Target Guest Card - Marshall Fieldís Card - Mervynís Card - American Express - Visa - MasterCard - Discover
Important Note: Save an additional 10%
Open a Target Credit Card Account ( takes about 10 mins )
10% Discount Off Your Entire 1st Purchase
Caution ! - This is done at the Cash Register when you pay for your items.
Do not let them claim that the discount will be taken off via your first CC statement.

What:
Clearance Price Sticker; Color = A Combined Color of an Orange & Red Tint
This sticker has a "WAS" Price and a "NOW" Price printed on it.
Furthermore the sticker will have a 9 Digit Internal Target SKU #/DPC # in this format XXX XX XXXX
Important Note: Clearance stickers usually represent a lower "NOW" Price.
However, some FATwallet Members have reported seeing the "NOW" Price being higher than the "WAS" price so be careful.
This higher "NOW" Price is not a misprint. The Item will scan at the higher "NOW" Price.

The Target Clearance Sticker will also have a ??% printed on the Upper Right Portion of the sticker.
This ??% represents the savings difference between the "NOW" Price and the "WAS" Price.
Thus, if an item "WAS" $100.00 but is "NOW" $25.00 than 75% will appear in the Upper Right portion of the sticker.
Available Discounts:
10%, 15%, 25%, 30%, 50%, 55%, 60%, 75%, 80% and 90%(max for seasonal items ie xmas)

Important Note
You may or may not find clearance deals at any particular Target Store.
It is evident that discounts vary greatly by individual stores, departments and management.

Thus, your chance of finding specific deals posted HERE at FATwallet depends mostly on your shopping location.

------- Frequently Asked Questions -------
01. Is the Sticker Price or the Price Labeled on the shelf the correct Price?
Maybe... that is what is so great about the Target Deals.
Regardless if the item has no sticker, a regular sticker or a clearance sticker SCAN IT.
You may be pleasantly surprised.

02. Is the Scanned Price the Correct Price?
-Depends:
--IF Price is lower than Shelf Label Price and/or Sticker Price:
Yes, in almost all situations the Scanned Price Supersedes any marked price.
--IF Price is higher than Shelf Label Price, Sticker Price and/or an Advertised Price:
In this case contact a manager, the law is very fuzzy in this circumstance.
However, in most cases a manager will sell you the item at the Lower Label Price, Sticker Price and/or Advertised Price.
Otherwise you could potentially sue for False Advertising - Especially if you have a Flyer Stating a specific Sale Price.

03. I went to my Local Target and didn't find any Clearance Stuff?
Your Mileage May Vary depending on the Target Store you visit.
Try shopping at another Target Store.

04. I really want this item but I am afraid that if I come back in a couple of days it will be gone?
Be Afraid - Your hunch is totally correct.
If you really want that item and like the price - Purchase it.

05. Can I purchase the item now and bring it back when the price drops?
Perhaps?
Although Most Target Managers will explain this is not Target Policy.
It doesn't hurt to try. Many FATwallet Members have reported price adjustments on Clearance Items.

06. Can I purchase a display item?
Again, some Target Mangers will expalin that this is not a Target Policy and will refuse to sell you a display item.
However, Many FATwallet Members have reported purchasing Display Items.
Comeback another time when there is a new manager or try another store.

07. I scanned an item and the display read "$0.00", "Item not found", etc..?
This item has already been on clearance and for one reason or another the item is technically no longer for sale.
However, locate an employee and enquire about the purchase price.
He or she will locate an LRT Scanner to determine the last Sale Price.

08. After scanning an item, I got "$0.00", does this automatically mean 75% Off?
Not Necessarily, Not all Target Stores discount merchandise equally.
Thus the item may or may not be 75% Off.
However, you can certainly enquire to that fact and mention the fact that you thought the Price was 75% Off.
Some Fatwallet Members have enjoyed some success with this tactic.

09. What is a LRT, LDT or PDT (scanner)?
A Handheld Barcode Scanner
This scanner has access to a database system that may contain the last sale price of an item.

10. What are those sheets of papers or lists that I see some people using at the scanners?
Those papers are probably a printed list from a personal computer with UPC Codes printed on them.
With a printed UPC code you can easily check the price of an item without the physical item in your hands.
Saves you time if your in a hurry. Problem though, is if you like the price you will then have to find the item in the store.
The item may no longer be available or sold out etc...

11. How do I print a UPC code?
You will need several items:
A. The UPC CODE of the item your interested in.
B. Computer software to print out a specific UPC CODE.
C. A computer
D. A printer

The Software --> Do an internet search for " upc generator " = you will get a lot of hits. (many have free trials)
I.E. UPC CODE + Label Magic

12. With a Copy of Someone Else's Receipt, Can I try to Price Match with the Target Store in my Neighborhood?
Yes of course you can TRY
The success of this tactic is very rare. Almost all Target Store Associates/Managers will not price match with other Target Stores.

13. I went to the store this morning right when it opened hoping to purchase one of the 6 Cameras, 4 DVDs etc.. I saw just the night before but when I arrived ALL the Items were ALREADY gone?
You can thank the employees. Chances are, the items were carted off and stored somewhere for later purchase by the employees.

14. Should I complain to the manager about the employees getting all the Clearance Deals?
Many varying opinions on this............
Ever since I have know about these Great Target Deals that I have come across, I have considered myself very lucky.
If you indeed feel that Customers should have the same opportunity to Clearance Deals then your probably much better off asking for the Store Manager's NAME and Writing a Formal Letter addressing your complaints and mailing it directly to that particular Target Store.
Most Importantly Though, make sure that within your letter, you mention the fact that you have forwarded a copy of this letter to their Corporate Office.

KEEP IN MIND, if to MANY Customers COMPLAIN about the AVAILABILITY of Clearance Deals, then Management may decide to discontinue Target Clearance Deals ALL together.

Additional Discounts - RE-WRAP
Contributed by FATwallet Member " RobandMar "

Display model that has the longer orange and white tag on it
(usually 20% off the lowest clearance tag). Most Targets should
do it and you might have to ask for it to be done. I picked up
an IPOD and I am sure most people know that it never dropped to
the 75% off (it just went to 0.00 and stayed at 50% off when
scanned with a LRT). Then another person doing mark downs came
by and said that should be a RE-WRAP and took it to the back
and came back with a new price of $140. Which was pretty good
so I snapped it up. So just remember if you see a display and
ask them if this can be done on a RE-WRAP (it is supposed to
be done on the selling of any display or returned opened item).

Another In Depth Post by ArmyMan Rebate Theory

Glossary
DPC = Data Product Code
UPC = Universal Product Code
SKU = Stock Keeping Unit
LDT = Laser Data Terminal Series
LRT = Laser Radio Terminal Series ( Handheld Scanner such as the LRT-3800 )
PDT = Portable Data Terminal Series
PM = Private Message
CC = Credit Card

From FATwallet Member "Shaggybuck"
Instead of DPC, you should have DPCI, which actually stands for Department, Class, Item.

better you than me - thanks

I am SOOO not worthy <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>! Awesome work, thanks!!!

Crystal <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

wow

Thank you, I bookmarked it

wow! thanks!!!

how long did it take you to all of that?

Hey, thanks.

very nice! thanks <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

here's a website that will let you generate UPCs online and print them without installing any software on your PC:

barcodesinc.com

Must of take you hours to do all that. You definetly have more time then me to come up with such a beautiful list. I want to add one other thing to your list. After shopping at Target they have a system called "RE-WRAP". What that is, is usually the display model that has the longer orange and white tag on it (usually 20% off the lowest clearance tag). Most Targets should do it and you might have to ask for it to be done. I picked up an IPOD and I am sure most people know that it never dropped to the 75% off (it just went to 0.00 and stayed at 50% off when scanned with a LRT). Then another person doing mark downs came by and said that should be a RE-WRAP and took it to the back and came back with a new price of $140. Which was pretty good so I snapped it up. So just remember if you see a display and ask them if this can be done on a RE-WRAP (it is supposed to be done on the selling of any display or returned opened item). This is just my 2 cents worth. Good luck out there.

One other thing....j/k<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Nice job armyman....Hopefully this will keep stupid questions to a minumum in the main target thread.

Thread gets so clumpted up sometimes with questions and misc.BS that its hard too scan the deals without reading 10 pages of small talk...We need a target deal discussion thread like another member had posted...

Stop you are about to post in target hotdeals.
(1)Only post your hot finds and UPC`s here.
(2)Do not ask stupid questions.
(2)Do not beg for merchandise..
(3)Do not damnn your fellow fatwalleteer to helll because he got three items and u got none..
(4)Contribute something when possible to help other members or the community...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
(5)Do not think the item is free just because it scanned $.00 and try to hide it on the bottom rack of your shopping cart...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Fatwallet surely rules...Don`t get any better than this..<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

GREAT IDEA "purplehaze"

thanks for your hard work , very nice....

Thanks! Great information!

Awesome! Thanks <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

This new tool is also pretty handy for shopping Target Clearance prices.

www.pricedb.com

Problem is some of the items aren't in there yet but they are growing.

Best ........ thread .......... EVER!

Holy Crap AM!!! I'm both impressed and disturbed. THANKS!!!!

I vote for this as the "Thread of the Year".
A goog exhaustive/comprehensive treatise.
I admire your fortitude and stamina. This was not produced in a few hours. Quite a lot of
time was expended in the production of this (I sometimes have to produce 10-20 page documents/contracts at work and realize the amount of effort that the research takes.

I am impressed and appreciate your effort.

Thanks!!!!

Army Man this is absolutely wonderful!! I'm new to FatWallet and now I can't wait to get to Target! Thanks so much for sharing!!!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Ditto! Thanks for sharing the great advice!

<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif"border=0>

Great info!

Well done! I hate to nitpick, but Instead of DPC, you should have DPCI, which actually stands for Department, Class, Item. This is target's proprietary inventory system, which is seperate from UPC, and can be used most reliably to find products with an LRT.

This one made my day!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

This is the one major perk that Target team members have working in a thankless retail job. If you want the good deals than head up front and apply for a job. And yes....a lot of the deals don't even make it out of the back<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Are all these deals supposed to be saved, so one flea market owner or Ebayer can come in and grab them all, just like I read about in numerous posts.

RG

I was asking tips everywhere but found this, thanks<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Does this apply to Super Target as well? or just the regular target?

YES SUPER TARGET TOO

From my post

WOW! I just found this VERY informative thread after being here for a month!
My question on the Target printables: Where do you get them to link them here on FW from the get-go? I went to Target.com but didn't see anything about printing coupons there...
I am going to Target for the FIRST time this weekend, and want to be sure I have all my Target coupons ready to go! Lol....

ArmyMan - excellent information.

When and item scan "Item not found = Item has been purged from data base" What kind of pricing can I expect? The price on the clearance tag or additional clearance?

This one gets you another stripe. Thanks for the effort (and want to come work for me?).

whoah- that's was quite informative. thanks op

Anyone know if they are usually marked down in the system, at the end or beginning of these days?! Gotta get there QUICK when something good gets CHEAP!

Great Info

Display models on clearance have the advantage that you can further bring the price down: it's on clearance, but tell the sales clerk that it's a display and ask for a discount: I obtained an additional 25% to 33% of clearence cameras because they would come as is without software/cable/box...

Situation:

All Told Oldham Homeroom products are seasonal and were clearanced, eventually hitting 90% off.

For weeks it seemed all the stuff was gone, but now a lamp has reappeared. The regular price was $16.99. The item now scans at 0.00 on a regular scanner, and scans at $16.99 on an employee handheld scanner.

I asked a cashier why this went from clearance to regular price, and she asked the person supervising the check-out lanes, and they simply said "$16.99" They didn't give an explanation.

How do I convince them that I should be able to get this lamp for 90% off?

Wow im surprised i missed this thread. I used to work at target for two years as of august this year. The reason why you did not get it for 90% was because it scanned on the Employee's LRT at the last price it was going for. If it was on a clearance area and has another sticker then you should of got the price for it the person you talked to should of changed it. Probably was too lazy.

tried to purchase a cobra 2 pack of walkie talkies that scanned item not found. the employee that I asked said it
was salvage and would not sell it to me, allthough he admitted he had sold one earlier in the day to another customer.

what is this "salvage" stuff?

terrydeto said:

salvage is stuff that they cant sell off after clearence (usually stuff thats sitting for awhile AFTER the 75% off clrnce). and for the most part gets written off and given to goodwill (at least the store here does this) or (if like walmart) independant dealers can come in and bid on pallets for insanely low prices (flea-marketers here do this as well)

i tell ya though, the best deal i ever got at target was 2 13'' Memorex TV's w/ black/clear casings and f/r AV input for $30 each. it was a brand new store, they were sitting on an endcap i scanned it for shitzngiggles and it rang 0.00, asked the hot girl at the electronics counter for a price, she called the manager and they let me have em for $30 each. perfect TV for the shop, other one went to my friend who needed a TV.

Whens the best time to get video game clearances. I always read about people getting great deals on video games like for a few dollars and then when I go to the store I see the tag that has the game for $3 but its all sold out. So which day is usually there clearance day for video games.

Gregster88, video games are usually marked down on Mondays with electronics. If you read the first post on the first page, there's a schedule of what gets marked down on which days. While most stores follow these schedules, there is usually 2-5 weeks between markdowns of the same item, at least from my experience. If the clearance item has a shelf tag, it has a date which tells when it was last reduced, so you can estimate when it will be marked down further.

Has anyone successfully used manufacturer coupons with Target 'SMART' coupons loaded on the Target Visa card.

I bought several items and only my manufacturer coupons got taken off. I called Customer Care and they said that Target Smart coupons were infact manufacturer coupons, so only one would get taken off.

Is this true? any experience with this, anyone?
