Hello mrblackpcs2, Thank you so much for all your advice. I read the whole original thread and really appreciate you helping all of us. I live in New Jersey and the Zip is 08520
I am looking for a 2005 Honda Odyssey. Narrowed it down to 2 models. The links for Edmunds.com are ..
1. EX Without Leather - ->null

2. EX With Leather - ->null

Could you please let me know where I should start and what I should expect to pay for both models..?

Thanks again..

First decide which model you really would like. Leather is easier to maintain. Then find it at a local dealer. Based on your zip, you might wanna check out PA dealers too. Go look at the vehicle during the dealers closed hours. Then start negotiating this month around the 20 to the 31st. Good luck

Get your info and advice from Edmunds.com. If you're buying a GM car, check out autodealerhelp.com for a lot of advertised and not advertised rebate programs. Go to your local library and get the last months worth of "Automotive News" magazine to find out about any special manufacturer to dealer incentive programs that are going on. When they tell you that they aren't going to make any money on a near invoice deal, you'll know better. Buy near the end of one of these incentive programs. Finally, if you don't have the cash, you should question whether you can afford the car. Buy a used car and save the money you would have spent on a loan. When you've done that, then think about getting a new car.

Thanks for replying mrblackpcs2. I have decided we are gonna go for the EX with leather in Silver Pearl Metallic. I have already seen this vehicle at one dealer and have called 30 dealers around my location including PA. Some of them were ouright rude and short when I told them I wanted to buy at invoice. A few offered the invoice price+%6 tax+Destination+DMV+Doc+Tire charge.
Only one offered 200 less than invoice + all other fees mentioned above+tax.
What do you think? Should I go for it or negotiate more. What price would be realistic?
I will probably ask them to include a full size spare and low financing rate before I close the deal.(Honda does not offer anythin like Toyota's %1.9 for 3 years currently).
Your inputs will be highly appreciated.

Thank you thank you thank you oh wonderous and illustrious and all-powerful moderator who locked my thread asking for SPECIFIC help on a SPECIFIC model and stating that it must be posted to a GENERAL thread on GENERAL advice on ANY cars, advice which will help but not address my SPECIFIC request about a SPECIFIC vehicle. It's like referring someone who just wants to grow daylilies to a college textbook on botany. I've done the general research, now I need help with the details of this particular deal on this one particular car model.
Anyway, in hopes some nice FatWalleters who enjoy a challenge would enjoy helping with my request and might actually see it in this thread...please, any help would be much appreciated.

I've asked for help in how to negotiate pricing for a new 2004 vehicle in a previous thread and received excellent advice to get me started with the research.
Now we're at the "yes, we must buy something" stage, and I really still like a 2004 Pontiac Vibe at a local dealership. The car is loaded with the extra navigation package, side airbags, the fancy 6-CD player under the passenger seat, etc. Those are really nice, but not enough that I want to pay extra for them.
Sticker price was $20,855.00, including DVD Navigation system, Power Group Value Package, Premium Monotone Appearance, and Destination Charge of $560.00, and the salesman claimed their bottom-line price is $17,500 plus title, tax (9-3/4% here) and license.
So far you wonderful FatWallet people and the car sites I've checked like Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds have helped with the following info:
Invoice $15,525 basic car, list $16,605, target price $15,725 plus Destination Charge of $560, title, tax and license.
There's a Dealer Holdback of $498 and apparently no Dealer Incentive with this car. I was advised by a FatWalleter that they won't give up the Holdback.
Apparently there is a Model Year Final Payment Plan kickback to the dealer of $2,000 under GM Special Programs too.
Warranty is lousy at 36 months or 36,000 miles for basic equipment and powertrain, something that is a definite negative point I'll be using while negotiating with them. I absolutely do not believe in buying those expensive Extended Warranty plans but won't tell the dealer that until we're done negotiating and have our price in writing.
More FatWallet advice: tell them I'm paying for "old technology" with the nav system and that I'm paying interest on the nav system when it's financed with the car. I'd be better off just buying a good aftermarket system, especially since they're tacking on an additional outrageous $1,600 for their built-in system!!!!
I was also advised to remove the Arbitration clause from the contract when we sign.
(1) What is the lowest we could expect to negotiate the dealer down to for this vehicle with the extra equipment? (If we don't get it, we'll go looking for one without the fancy dodads and gadgets, but I'd like to try for this one first.)
(2) What's the lowest price we could expect to negotiate down to for a basic model without the nav system and power group value package?
(3) What is the best interest rate we could expect to get these days on a 2004 new vehicle? We have excellent credit, and our rate was 4.5% on my husband's new 2002 Ford Ranger Edge a couple of years ago. Is that a realistic rate to shoot for in today's market?

I went through the Kelley Blue Book and came got a value of $17,642.00 for the Vibe with the Radio Navigation system (add anther $700 for automatic transmission). I found that when I bought my previous two cars that I could get within $300 of the Kelley Blue Book. So the dealer saying $17,500 seems like a good deal. From reading your post it looks like the car has too many options for you (since you don't want to pay for them). To get the car down any lower in price you are going to have to find one without the navigation system.

I have a few other ideas you may want to take a look at. If you have a memebership to Sam's Club or Costco, you may be able to go through them to get a better deal. I purchased a car for $500 below invoice without having to haggle through Costco. The other option is to see if the dealer has an internet salesman or use Kelley Blue Book/Edmunds to request a quote. I've found that these people will go lower than a salesman I've talked to at the same dealer.

Thanks, slimcustomer. I'll definitely check out those interest rates. It's a relief to know the low rates are still available. I'd like to finance for 5 years, not 6. And I'll follow your suggestions too, dremo. I spent nearly 2 months researching, reviewing, deciding and dickering over my husband's Ford Ranger Edge to get the price we wanted to pay, and I'm trying to shorten the time for this vehicle to maybe a month instead. If we could get it down to $17,000 including taxes, we could swing it, but that would be a base of $15,000 for the vehicle, not the $17,500 the dealer wants, so yes we'll probably have to end up finding one without all the fancy expensive bells and whistles. Those are just something else to break down anyway. LOL

Car of interest: 2005 Suzuki Forenza
Styles: LX or EX - 4spd auto
Zip code: 32304

Right now, Suzuki has some pretty decent rebates/incentives going on. Considering Suzuki seems to be trying to make its way back to the car market, what are the chances I could get this for invoice or below (before rebates)? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mrblackpcs2 and other smart FW'ers

We want to to buy a new Honda Odyssey Touring with Nav/RES DVD. We currently own (in the free and clear) a 2002 Honda Odyssey EX-L/ DVD. On Edmunds I get the following values for its Trade In/Private Sale/Dealer Sale: $16,356, $17,729 , $20,200. We live right outside Kansas City in zip 66043. I'm military if that helps at all in your advice.

We love the Honda but it just recently went out of warranty and we like the new style and options better (isn't that usually the case).

We are looking at the following vehicle: Edmunds New Vehicle link:
Honda Touring Price w/options

The above link doesn't go to the final Edmunds page but here is the following information. It doesn't have any options, Silver coler, and it prices out at: MRSP: $38,495; INVOICE: $34,623; TMV OTHERS PAYING: $37,472.

The above prices do not include Destination Charges of $515 and Taxes&Tags.

I have not decided yet rather to sell Private or just do a trade-in. I rather just do a trade in but know I will take at least a 1000 dollar hit. I am already at a worst case example of 4.20% loan rate and should be able to get 3.95% from my credit union.

I've done some initial email around to the Internet Dealers to get a feeling of their initial pricing and most are starting at 1000-1500 over invoice in the KC and surround 30-50 mile radius. I let them know I wanted to buy before the month was out. I know throughout the country other people are getting negotiating this vehicle for invoice. They are even ordering it at invoice and not having to settle for a color on the lot.

I have several questions after reading the extensive thread:

1) What is the best way to work the situation now, knowing that the dealers are at 1000-1500 over invoice and their emails basically are take it or leave it and telling me there is demand enough to charge over invoice.

2) How do I work the 2002 Honda into the equation?

My best case would be that I buy at invoice, do a trade it at Edmunds value of 16,300 and apply it against the total cost, make a $3000-4000 down payment on a credit card to get Cash Back and upromise credit, and use the 3.95% to get a better deal for the financing of the remaining $15,000 cost.

Dealers have a lot (15-25) of regular 2005 Odysseys on their lots but maybe only 2-3 Touring NAV/DVD versions in my area.

Anyone's opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to school me in the process.

OK, mrblack and other carbuying gurus here, the link is for a 2005 Pontiac Vibe, FWD 4dr Wagon (1.8L 4cyl 5M) with a few options as follows:
Base invoice price: $ 16,017.00
No regional adjustment
Optional:
MXD 4-speed automatic transmission, add $ 757.00
PDN Power Group Value Package, add $ 1,024.00
Color: Lava (no price adjustment)
Destination Charge: $560.00
SubTotal with options: $ 18,358.00
Incentives and Rebates: - 1,500.00
Total: $ 17,063.00

Salesman called in response to my Edmunds query and says they have 2 Vibes, one in Moonstone (extra charge for "Monotone Appearance Pkg) and one in Lava (a sort of charcoal color - no extra charge). They're having a "March Madness Sale" (yea, right, and I can get him a bridge in Brooklyn real cheap, LOL) and are offering up to $4,000 off (which INCLUDES the incentives), and he quoted around $16,915.00 price BEFORE tax, title and license) with an additional $1,000.00 off for financing through GMAC. It turns out tax on a vehicle here is around 7.25% instead of the higher 9.75% sales tax on most everyday items, including groceries.
My goal is a price of $15,000 (or less) out the door, plus tax, title and license with financing of 3.9% or less for 5 years.
Should I continue to look at the Vibe or am I being unrealistic and need to look at other vehicles?
As a Mobile Notary, I cover 7 counties (mostly rural driving, a lot of mountainous winding roads) and need a vehicle that is easy in/easy out, sturdy and stable for country driving, good on gas, and flexible in carrying capacity as I use it for all types of chores (groceries, Lowe's, garage sales and auctions, the dump, etc.) In the past, my favorite vehicles have been a Chevy Celebrity Eurosport wagon along with a couple of Oldsmobile 88s and a 98, and currently a 1992 Pontiac Sable, all 4-door sedans and all with BIG trunks, the two most important features to me.
Suggestions are most welcome. Thanks!

You''ll take more than 1000 hit if you trade it in. Remember the average used car has at least 3-5k in mark up. Try to sell the vehicle out right

stop using email, and follow the plan I've laid out for you. The dealers get thousands of emails per month asking for invoice. If they sell 50 units at their price via email they are very happy. So why should they make a big deal over someone they have never met?

2) How do I work the 2002 Honda into the equation?
you dont!!! You dont mention the trade until the new vehicle is already negotiated

I prefer to use the blackbook to calculate trades, because thats what the dealers use, not NADA or bluebook like edmunds uses, big difference. Also if you have a carmax near by, have them apraise your trade.

Dealers have a lot (15-25) of regular 2005 Odysseys on their lots but maybe only 2-3 Touring NAV/DVD versions in my area.

consider buying the aftermarket dvd/nav unit. FYI my mothers brand new 2004 fully loaded suburban's dvd doest play dvd+r discs. What a waste!!!

Unfortunately the link didn't help, mrblack. TN state sales tax rate is 6%, but there's also county tax rates which vary from county to county. I was told it was "about 7.25%", so I'll call our local sales tax office tomorrow to find out the exact rate on new vehicles and get back to you on that.
Thanks!

Good morning, mrblack. I just called and was told the rate is 9.75% on the first $3,200 of the vehicle purchase price, and 7% on the balance.
If there's a trade-in (which there won't be in my case), the trade-in allowance is deducted from the vehicle purchase price.
Two additional bonus rebates/discounts: 1) because we also own a Ford truck, we qualify for a $1,000 GM Conquest program discount, and 2) we are looking for someone who can help us qualify for the GM in the Driveway program discount, which should amount to about $900.
Also, one dealer told us they do charge an additional $79 "paperwork" fee for taking care of taxes, title and license, that all the dealers charge a "paperwork" fee for this service, and that theirs is the lowest of any of them.
