just like there's a 700m owners thread with excellent info, maybe we can have one for the 350xt.

Anyone have a reliable source for the NB-2LH battery? I'd like to get a couple.

Also I'm looking to get the battery grip, BG-E3, down the road unless someone stumbles on a deal.

Camera might get here today, lens from b&h here already, mem card at Dell, gotta call them.

good idea.

I just hope Dell will ship my order. Mine is scheduled to be shipped on Apr 25th. I ve already bought the Sigma 18-125mm lens and 1gb CF.

i also got a later date but when i checked the status it was already shipped. i never got a confirmation email either, better check.

Mine is supposed to ship on April 23rd.

Friday I ordered the 300 with a ship date of 4/25. Saturday I checked the Dell website and it said "backordered". I called Dell and they said "we can't get anymore so we are going to cancel your order". I had them switch to the 350Xt (with lens). They have me a hard time about the $90 coupon saying "its expired". After a lot of talk, they aggreed to let me use it because I already applied it to the first order which was going to be cancled. They would not let me use the 35 DPA credit saying "our cost is $880 so we can't give you anymore discounts". I got free 2nd day shipping out of them.

I ordered a UV and Polorized (you need circular Polarized filters) from this guy

Still waiting for camera to arrive.

I got my rebel XT Kit (Black) yesterday.
In the camera body reads "350D digital".
Dell online picture says "DIGITAL REBEL XT".

Is the above two different by any way ???

Please let me know if any one has a explanation for this

same thing, 350D = rebel XT.

Is Dell selling non US version. I heard that only REBEL XT is US version.

My order still says "back-ordered" but the shipping date hasn't changed (estimated ship date: 4/13 so tomorrow). They are giving me the run-around about when it should actually ship. Anyhow, I am thinking about buying a lens for it (I got the kit lens, which has gotten mixed reviews- especially indoors) and will probably get a Sigma (check out www.sigma4less.com; very good deals).
I can't wait for it to arrive...

A site for a tutorial on using its features (although in macromedia and I haven't gotten the lessons to work yet!):

fw sandisk 1gb ultra for $75

Received my Rebel XT kit from Dell today, got all of the discounts, but forgot about the 3% Fat Cash, still very happy with the hot price.

Anyone has any recommendation for a good holster type case that would fit this XT either with its integral lens, or perhaps with the slightly bigger 28mm-200mm Zoom lens? Canon does not seem to have a case designed specifically for this Rebel XT model?

lowe pro, tamrac have good bags.

mine is finally here after the mailroom signed for it on monday!

i need a 420ex bad!

Got my silver XT today (it says rebel XT on front). No free 256m flash card in box. so far I have talked to 3 different CSR's and 1 person sales at Dell. Still no flash card. Been on phone 1 hour, now on hold again with CSR. I am starting to hate Dell.

Starting to hate Dell? If it weren't for the HUGE discount, I wouldn't buy from them. I'm still waiting for my camera because my ship date changed from 4/13 to 4/20 (never mind that I jumped on the deal as soon as it was available and the web site said "usually ships in 1-2 days"). So the CSR says they will refund my overnight shipping (I have to call back though) and they are trying to expedite my order, but I bet that does nothing. So I have to wait another week. Oh well. I got the kit lens b/c for $100 bucks, its pretty good (nice reviews). My next lens will be the 50mm 1.4. I've heard you can take great low-light shots with that lens.

First of all I gotta thank all you for helping me get such a great deal on my Rebel XT, about 788 not including the 3.3% from Fatwallet Appreciate it.
Anyhows, I got my Silver Xt and I didn't recieve the 256mb card either. But WillR, think about it like this, you can't hate Dell cause they had their coupons which helped us get our Rebels at such sweet prices and two, with a nice camera, you'll probably never use the 256MB card anyways. We'll probably be going to Dell again when more coupons come out, to get bigger cards to fit our cameras. So worse comes worse, at least we got the Rebels at such a kickin' price. I'm happy!

Thanks for all the discounts everybody!

i got to finally play with it and it's small. i need the battery grip BG-E3. borrowed my friends cf card and even though it's slow i shot 20 shots continuously. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border=0>

there was a 25% off mem at Dell yesterday.

Your right, because of Dell coupons is the only reason I could afford the camera anyway. They did agree to ship me the 256m flash card but I will beleave it when it gets here. In fact Dell called back today to see if I was happy with there support.

I called back today to try to buy the 2 year extended warrantee. forget it, they can't sell it to you unless you check the box when you order it. Hope if it dies, it does it in the first year.

Anyway, I stuck in a 32M card I had laying around (you got to format it inside the camera first) and everything works. 32m holds 7 pictures!

CompUSA may be able to sell you warranty.

Can any one please let me know..
How significant or necessary is the "Dell's 2 yr extended warrant" for our Digital Rebel ??

Is Digital rebel suppose to give any problems in 3 years ???

Thanks in advance

I just bought a Lexar 512M 80X flash card for it. Man its fast! Saves a full size image in a fraction of a second.

CF Dbase

Here is a good database for a good amount of CF cards.

From the looks of it, the Sandisk Ultra II are the best bang for the buck since the Ultra III only writes a couple KB's faster.

SanDisk Extreme III 1GB 4.888MB/sec
SanDisk Ultra II 1GB (Edge stamp: BB0306VZ CHINA) 4.854MB/sec

I had my Digital Rebel 300d for 2 years and no problems. If you charge the purchase with your AMEX Blue card, you get an automatic double of the warranty from AMEX. The 1st year is manufacturers and the extended part is through the card.

I used the wty claim on AMEX for a Canon Printer- no problem. I shipped them the printer and they gave ma a total refund. The best part is that the printer replacement model was 1/2 the cost of its predecessor, so I made like $200.

AMEX Blue rocks... Too bad they don't have the BVG program anymore. That was a good deal...

I've AMEX gold and it has BVG along with ext warranty. Not sure if they still PM to online stores.

They stop PM online store long long time ago. Not only that, recently they tightened their policy on PM local ads as well, you have to send the whole ads or magezine instead of just dated front page and the item page.

Photoshop Elements 3.0 will support Rebel XT Raw files sometime in May when the Raw update will be available as a download from adobe.com The same RAW update for CS2 will also be available in May
as a download from adobe. I believe the bundled software that came with the XT supports Raw as well.

I picked up a Lowepro topload camera case today at my local B&M Calumet camera store.
This case offered the smallest footprint in their selection and the best fit for my new Rebel XT and the standard kit lens. It could accommodate a lens up to one inch longer maximum. There's some vinyl padding built into the sides of the case (no velcro, I hate that stuff) and the XT slides in without any binding. The Cases come in several colors. I picked up the Navy version at Calumet for $20.00 OTD. It's a less expensive alternative to the custom semi-hard EH18-L Canon camera case (listed in the back of the rebel XT manual) that Amazon sells for $52.xx

Calumet sells the Lowepro thru Amazon.com for $15.xx plus $8 shipping.

Is anyone interested in pooling buying power to buy Sigma EF-500 DG Super Flashes at a better than normal dealer price (~$199)? They look like a value over the low end Canon 420Ex and much cheaper than the 580EX.

If bet if we combined an order for several units we could get a discount through a Sigma dealer. Any interest, feel free to PM me!

Curless

After reading this, I think I will wait for a canon flash to go on sale. Canon really does not release "how" its E-TTL II system works, the other companies have to reverse engineer it before they can build a flash.

http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

Ok, I can still buy two of these for the price of one 580ex on sale and still get e-TLL II (which is built into the camera not the flash).

Here is what your referenced article says about the Sigma:
"EF-500 Super DG are particularly well regarded by a lot of EOS users, since feature-wise they’re nearly identical to Canon’s 550EX, which costs twice as much. The Sigma units are not built as sturdily as the Canon, but it’s hard to argue with the price. They even have wireless capabilities compatible with Canon’s system and has the ability to operate as an optical slave."
"In other words Sigma buys Canon cameras and lenses, hooks them up to computers and figures out how they talk to each other."

The more telling article by the same author is here:
By The Same Author:

"In short, the EF-500 Super is almost identical to the 550EX in terms of its feature list."

Sigma even will update the firmware if your new camera later on doesn't match up.

if i buy a 420ex ($15 rebate) + 70-200/4 ($25 rebate) will i get 2x $40 rebate?

Anyone looking for Additional equiptment?
andrew1@tampabay.rr.com

HP has a $50 rebate for purchase of one of many different HP printers for customers who have also purchased any manufacturer's camera from March 27, 2005 - October 1, 2005. I think HP is rolling out new photo printer technology this year, so prices appear to be dropping on existing models.

"Qualifying products do not need to be purchased at the same time, but all purchases must be made between March 27, 2005 and October 1, 2005."

"Requests must be postmarked within 45 days of purchase date of last product purchased."

"Qualifying HP printer or HP All-in-One product
• Any HP Photosmart printer priced at $129 U.S./$179 C.D.N. or higher (before rebate and taxes)
• Any HP All-in-One product with digital camera memory card slots priced at $129 U.S./$179 C.D.N. or higher (before rebate and taxes)
• Any HP Deskjet 9600 and 9800 Wide Format Printer series
• Any HP Deskjet 6840 and 450 Printer series"

New review on PC MAgazineReview

sweet folks, thanks for the links. My first real digital camera, lots to learn.

It looks like my flash from my Rebelx won;t work on this camera. I'm hoping I can get a new shoe for the flash, but I'm also hearing non Canon flashes are not compatible with the 350xt.

Any pointers?

When I try to take a portrait in low light condition using flash, and press the shutter button half-way, the flash fires (flickers) several times and a solund emits from the camera. Is this normal?

Thanks.

Yes, it's normal. The flashes are to help autofocusing in low light. If you or your subject hates it, most external flash units like 420ex have much better red autofocus assist beam. I am looking for a deal on the 420ex myself.

Cruise the Buy/Sell forum on www.fredmiranda.com. 420ex's can be had for $125-145 just about anytime.

[Q] Thanks, Xiaowei.

I guess the sound that the flash makes is also normal. I don't like the idea of external flash, as it makes the thing so bulky! Someone mentioned a good lens upgrade is CANON 28-135 IS USM, that is next on my agenda.

There is no substitute for a quality external flash. If you think it will make the camera bulky, wait till you twist on the 28-135mm...it is big and heavy. I hated my copies of that lens; soft at apertures below f/8 and mediocre build quality. IS is subjective...I never used it; you might use it all the time. Personally, on a budget, I'd opt for either the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (ONLY the f/3.5 version) or the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. Both have ring USM (full time manual focus) and are sharp when stopped down (using a smaller aperture.) Both can be had new/used for less than $200.

With digital, glass selection makes all the difference; when you have an 8(.2)MP image blown up to 100% on your computer screen, any softness/imperfections are going to stand out. My suggestion would be to spend more money now and be happier down the road: L glass or a quality 3rd party lens like the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8.

If you can't find the sense in purchasing a flash, then you might want to consider adding fast prime to the mix. The 50mm f/1.8 is dirt cheap yet ridiculously sharp.

Great post!

I just bought the XT with kit lens. Also bought the "dirt cheap" 50mm f/1.8. I am not ready for the super zoom (and heavy) lens yet.

You mentioned three mid range lenses:

28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (ONLY the f/3.5 version) or
24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8

Considering that I have the kit lens and the 50mm lens already, which of the above three ( or others) you would recommend for me?

Thanks for your and other fellow FWers' help!
