I should have been clearer - it just doesn't feel like a Saab. As many said, they didn't do much to make it feel like a Saab - example, the current ignition key position, the subpar interior, made in Japan (I won't buy Japanese period.)

If you're in the market for a WRX wagon, this is a good deal. The SAAB is slightly more refined and has better perks.
As far as the other stuff goes, FW is the place to come for deals, not insight into the automotive industry.
Despite their cooperation and familial ties (the Piech and Porsche families), VW AG does not Porsche, nor does VW own Bosch. At least the latter is spelled correctly, not the common "Bosche."
As well as being the most profitable, Porsche and BMW remain the largest independently-owned auto companies, though both are relatively small fish compared to the GMs, Fords, D-Cs, and Toyotas of the world. |

jason1880 said:It's funny how Saab people bash this car because it's not a true Saab. Well, no it's not, but it's a heck of a good car. But, while we're on that point the 93 is really not a "real" saab either. It's based on the GM global kappa platform (the same one as the malibu and the G6) and is more like an Opel.
GM's Buick division bought Opel back in the 60s when they were made in Germany. I had an Opel GT, sort of a poor man's Corvette. It actually looked like a mini-Vette but it was powered by a 4 cylinder engine. Not much top end but it was really maneuverable and a lot of fun to drive.
Anyway GM left Opel alone for a couple of years, then in the early 70s they started slapping Opel badges on some Oriental make. The brand was never the same after that, at least in the US. |

I've seen a few of those old Opel "Manta" GT's before one of my friends dads had a lime green version in the 1970's.
Coming from the UK I've never seen or heard of anything from Asia with an Opel badge on it? If you have an example I'd like to know in order to educate myself
I know that in many cases the Daewoo cars were originally based on European (Opel) running gear and in some cases the entire car was just rebadged. A good example would be the Daewoo "Racer" (Nexius? in UK). These cars started appearing in the UK in the early 1990's which is quite a bit after the 1970's
I think I've seen a few rusty example of the Pontiac "Racer" in the USA? This Car was originally the Opel "Kadette"/Vauxhall "Astra".
Continuing with the Subaru aspect of the thread Subaru part shares with Suzuki by rebadging the Suzuki "Swift" as a Subaru "Justy" (I think) but in 4 wheel drive flavour! |

Do ppl still find these PM "jokes" funny?
Anyway, it's a great deal for a SUBARU! If you are in the market for a SUBARU, this is a hot deal! Buy it because it's an awesome car, not because you are looking for a Saab. Saab is just another Pontiac now anyway (or it's heading that way). |

At the only SAAB dealer with-in 100 miles of work last night they told me they just sold their last 9-2X earlier that day. They offered to possibly get me one (letting me know they would have to pay a driver $100 to $150 to pick it up for me). They did verify there are several rebates, the $1,000 cash and the 0% financing, or you substitute a $4,500 rebate instead of the 0% financing for a $5,500 total rebate.
I've asked them to call me when they get one. The salesperson was not the sharpest knife. I told him I was contemplating this car or the Subaru and he starts telling me what a crappy car the Subaru is. When I told him they are made by the same company he acted like I was stupid informing me SAAB's are made in Sweden. I informed him he was wrong and he started backpedaling about SAAB service being better.
I like the idea of a loaner car when you bring you vehicle in for service... I hate that shuttle thing at my Ford dealer.
I got the "well there is not alot of money in the car so we can't discount much" (but at least they weren't indicating they wanted a markup). But they do the Costco thing, which I'm comfortable with since I'm lousy at negotiating. |

You can always buy any Subaru around or even below invoice price. Not knowing how much this Saabru is asking for in Saab dealership, it may or may not be a better deal than buy from Subaru dealership directly. |

All the Saab dealers I talked to were right around invoice when you asked. Also GM has about $800 of holdback on top of that, so you can probably get it for at least a few hundred under invoice. That makes this at least a grand cheaper than the subaru version. |

Are you saying the invoice price of the Saabaru is the same as Subaru?
Saab 9-2x AERO w/o any options: Invoice $25,603 MSRP $26,950 Subaru WRX Wagon w/o any options: Invoice $22,640 MSRP $24,395 |

No, but the car is about 3,500 higher than the subaru, (not equipment adjusted). Right now, the Saab has 5,500 in rebates, and the Subaru has 1,500 rebate. But the Saab has a higher holdback, (the amount the dealer gets paid to sell the car from the dealer), so you should be able to get it for at least $1,000 less than for the subaru version. |

According to Edmunds.com the dealer holdbacks are:
Saab 2.2% of the Base MSRP Subaru 3% of the Total MSRP (Amount may differ in Northeastern U.S.)

GM employee discount is about $2000 on this. Plus if you got a recent e-mail from GM with a $500 off best negotiated price, the total rebates come out to $8000!!!
I requested a few qoutes from dealers. My target is $20K for one with sunroof and wheels option on the AERO 5 spd. |

I still don't understand how you can say that the subaru could be cheaper. You show the difference in invoice at less than $3000 and the difference in rebates is over $4000? That's not even considering the diffence in content. Unless you completely get fleeced, buying the Saab should always be cheaper than buying the subaru right now (option adjusted). The Saab is not selling well at all, because people do not know about it, and saab snobs shun it. |

I said "it may or maynot be cheaper depending on how much Saab dealer asks for".
From what I can see the contents (minus a few changes mentioned before) are basically the same in base model. The difference is in the options. Leather, Sunroof and 17" wheels are all in options. Besides, your choices of warranty service will be limited comparing number of Saab dealers to number of Subaru dealers. |
