well, for 600m users, why not start our own 600m thread? (700m / 6000 users already have their own thread)

just got my 600m 5/2. It feels like a plastic toy. The cover doesn't even close nice and tight like other laptops. Anyone has the same thing?

Me 2. And I think the DVD+-RW also does not seem to be perfect to fit its place.

Gorge said: [Q]Me 2. And I think the DVD+-RW also does not seem to be perfect to fit its place.

YES!! The DVD drive is sticking out about 1/4" on its back edge....

But I have seen the same thing in a latitude D600 (similar to 600m) where the CD-Rom drive seems loose (but the cover closes rock solid in d600.)

well, count me in on the dvd drive sticking out. =)

i can't open internet exploerer or connect to the internet, but my wireless card said its log into the network. there is no problem with the wireless card since its connected to the network, but when i open explorer it said "can't find server or DSN problem". any advice?

The 600m rules.

The only flimsy part of it is near the DVD drive IMO and no my DVD+RW drive does not stick out at all.

The 600m comes with a screw to secure the DVD drive. Its inside a small plastic bag.

how do you guys check to make sure you have 64mb video ram versus say 32mb?
thanks.

OP u got a 600m and 700m?

no, only a 600m. I meant to say that 700m already has its own thread in DD forum...

You guys with the DVD drive problem - try screwing it in. On my 600m, everything lines up perfectly. Very nice quality for the price

any of you guys have problem with the dns yet? as stated above, my wireless card is connected, but i can't surf or communicate through the internet.

600M looks cheap and it is a very old series. I think Dell should make a 14" 5 lbs centrino laptop to replace 600M.

Thats exactly what I said. Those people need to screw it in with the supplied screw. Problem solved.

well the dvd player is definetly there. the other thing is the palm top gets heated real bad... one more thing .. i m not sure if you guys had.. may i can get some advice on it....

whenever try to start a program, the computer almost freezes for a second or two. like if i m playing a song on the windows media player, at the same moment open word document, the music stops playing for like a second or two.

I mean though not a big deal but still it should not happen.

And guys whats up with the rebate from Dell i sent it like 3 months back, emailed the Dell guys like twice. Never heard back from them .. any advice on that too

The palm area gets warm. Thats all.

Before I bought mine people claimed it get "SO HOT"....hardly....its just gets warm. HOT is when you cant keep you palm on it for a long time. It just feels warm....

What a bunch of girls.

the left palm top get heated cuz that's where the HD. It will get a little warm if you use the laptop a lot.

chechegoliwalebaba: you should call Dell instead of emailing them about your rebate. as for the delay when opening a program, i don't have that problem. well, i don't have Dell stuff on my laptop anyway. I install a fresh xp (pro) right after i got my laptop so there's no Dell crap that's pre-install.

qaz1001qaz: have you try to reformat your laptop? or you can call Dell for help since you got one year warranty.

cause you in the 700M thread talking about how to unscrew the laptop. So I thought u own both laptop

only thing to complain about is that battery is not "firmly" secured ....it does move upd and down a little if pressed.....i am on my 4th 600M so far and all of the have this... my guess its a design issue.... very very happy with this lappy !

question: is there a way to test battery? i have a weird feeling that a battery from my old system (5 months old) ran out of juice quicker then it used to.... maybe its all my imaginations though....

I assume 600m and 700m have the same kind of screws for the memory cover.

BTW, I just installed Kingston 512mb pc2700 valueram into the 600m. It didn't boot up the first time. I took it out and re-seated it. Booted up, but it did not pass the memtest86+ (specifically test #5). It's going back to CC...

Any recommendation for a good reliable sodimm RAM? thanks...

Thanks man,

One more quick question u all guys. I was thinking to buy a cable to connect my laptop to a TV. There came a small cable with 600m laptop when i bought it .. i m not sure what for it is used

all you need is a svideo cable to connect out to tv. When you do connect to the tv, you will need to go to display properties to turn on the tv from the ati driver area.

is there a specific svideo cable i need to buy for this 600m thing .. or any would do .. i just found this link on net .. i guess it should work . what do u guys think
http://store.yahoo.com/outletpc/c0285.html

pretty cheap .. so was thinking if its generally that cheap ...

do you guys think it's worth it to buy the extended warranty?

i bought a 3 year warranty for my 6000

I work in IT and I have seen a lot of laptops needing servicing. Of course they get much more abuse than I plan to do with mine, but it's something to think about. If a major part on your laptop like the motheboard or screen breaks after the warranty expires, it may cost as much to replace as the laptop. At least as much or more than the warranty cost in the first place.

the laptop will be used for school and my wife's consultant work so if it's out of commission for a month while I scour eBay for parts it will cost us as much money as it did to buy the warranty. If not more.

Just curious....
Anyone complained about their 600m accessories, etc. and have received free stuff or concession coupons? (like what 700m folks are doing...)

Oh I have just begun....

The 600m rules.

600M sucks, in fact all of Dell computers sucks in terms of design and quality. I hate my 600M after I upgraded to 700M, and hated both after I get my new fujitsu P7000 series.

dude, it's like comparing 200 thread-count sheets with 600 tc sheets! they address different markets!
pretty soon you'll see Dell making disposable computers...

The 600M is ugly. Other than that, it's not that bad <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border=0>

I have 600M for almost 2 years now - All I did with it is replaced the battery.
I think it's a great laptop for the money and pretty portable. I just bought myself a 6000 - It's OK, but kinda heavy.
IMHO if You travel a lot - 600M is the way to go.(700M doesn't count, because it doesn't have dedicated video memory)

The fujitus P7000 series of laptops are SLOW as balls.

With a 600m you can do everything a 700m or p7000 can do and ALOT more.

The 600m rules.

Does anybody else have a problem with major overheating on their 600m? I love mine but I've gotta say that this thing really heats up compared to a 6000 and that's with using it on well spread surfaces. Also, I've noticed that when the unit heats up too much, video performance suffers. I'm considering buying a fan pad or even just a small box fan to sit it on, but sometimes it can get really ridiculous. I wasn't a huge fan of my 6000, but at least it kept pretty well cool.

What type of accessories? I want to say my first 600m included an s-vid to comp. converter, but not much else besides that. What accessories should we have or would we want?

I tried to make pancakes on the 600M palmrest, not bad at all, but not as good as 600D. With 600D, you can grill some steak on it.

Yah, it grilled my wrist so bad, I had to turn it into dinner. This of course being the left wrist - the right one was just fine like everyone else.

When adaptor connect to the laptop, the indicator light on adaptor goes off. Now I can't start the computer with the adaptor or battery. Call Dell and was told that motherboard must be broken and need a new MB. it will cost me $500 plus tax.
Poor me! is just less than 2 yrs.
can i order a new motherboard and change it by myself? how much does it cost?
No Dell any more.

Thanks.

Did you try taking the battery out and putting it back in. Mine did something similiar and all I did was pop the battery out and back in and it powered up normally.
