FYE folks are telling me the price has been set at $499 and will be released at the end of April although they don't know if that's the bundle price or just for the system. I ordered 4 and can scan the receipt if anyone is willing to host. |

Linky CES is coming... PLAYSTATION 3 Jon Attaway 28 Dec 2005
The Consumer Electronics Show kicks off what promises to be a very memorable year for PlayStation fans - and PlayStation.com will be there. If you're a keen gamer, then it's likely that you're already familiar with the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, the huge event held in Los Angeles every May. But it's not the only event to factor in the industry's calendar. With gaming becoming ever more popular, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has become more important to companies like Sony Computer Entertainment, the company behind the PlayStation success story.
Held in Las Vegas each January, CES is enormous. As the name implies, the event isn't just about games - it's about all the devices that companies hope will excite us all over the next 12 months and beyond. The latest TVs, camcorders, MP3 players, speakers - the latest and greatest examples of all the gadgets you could possibly dream of, basically - vie for the attention of the thousands of attendees.
More than ever, CES is increasingly important to gamers. This year, it's arguably more important than ever, because the technology that's set to be showcased there will feature strongly in PLAYSTATION 3.
As announced at E3 last May, PS3 will make use of the new Blu-ray disc format, and exploit true high definition displays, all the way up to 1080p. What does this mean to you? Well, with the right equipment you'll soon be able to enjoy games and movies in astoundingly lifelike detail. Rest assured, we'll have plenty more information on this in the coming months.
We'll also be at CES when the show kicks off on the 4th January, and will be reporting back with all the news that matters to PlayStation gamers - so make sure you keep an eye on PlayStation.com bright and early in the New Year. |

I just pre-ordered mine from FYE for $50.00, they also make you enter into an agreement to purchase 2 games an an extra controller (not really a bundle, but seperate purchase). The $50 is towards the purchase of the PS3 and come release date you must buy all at the same time.
Not a bad deal, at least I'll be able to pick the games.
Looking forward to the GameStop/EBgames pre-orders, I'll be getting one of those too. |

So here is my prediction for 2006: Sony will not launch the Sony PS3 globally as Microsoft did with their Xbox 360.
Sony confirmed again early December that they are on track to launch the Playstation 3 in Spring 2006. The Sony PSP did launch in Spring 2005 in the US. Sales where ok, but it was not great either. The PSP was already on the market in Japan in December 2004. The Sony PS2 launched in Spring 2000 in Japan. The US launch date was in October 2000.
I predict it will be the same with the PS3, because the global launch of Microsoft did not bring any advantage in my mind. On the one hand you have still tons of disappointed consumers in the United States who wanted an Xbox 360 and did not get one. In Japan the Xbox 360 sales numbers did disappoint. Europe is in between. If Microsoft would have focused on the US first, it might have been better. Sony can start selling the PS3 in Japan in the middle of Summer and it would still be a huge success. For the US and Europe the main season to launch a video game console is autumn. There is no way around that. Every other launch time would mean a soft launch. Additionally, even if Sony is officially against it, the export of Japanese market consoles and games is a not a small factor that improves sales numbers sure a bit. 'Sony Fanboys' all around the globe will order a Japanese Sony PS3 (myself included) if it would only be available in Japan for a couple of month. I know lots of people owning a Japanese Sony PSP, who did not wait for the domestic launch. |

So I went to FYE, they told me due to the shear volume of pre-orders they're already on their 2nd wave of shipments. So screw that! Where else is allowing pre-orders? |

Interesting article on the PS3.
JusJustice - Do you have a link to an article where a Sony official confirmed a Spring 2006 PS3 launch?
I agree w/ you that it won't be a multi-market launch. It's tough to do and the 360 launch was close to a complete disaster (6 weeks after launch, and the consoles are still almost impossible to find). I'm sure they'll find a nice way to bash Microsoft for doing it too
PS3 also has the advantage of being the second console, and they can see that no matter how much hype there is, you need to have a solid set of launch games. Xbox 360 pulled their schedule in and beat many of the launch games. If DOA4 was ready for launch, I think things in Japan would be a lot different.
Someone here I think mentioned that the regions for BluRay were different than for DVD, so importing a console isn't going to be as risky as it was in the past. You should be able to play all US games...unless they have some other way of region locking that they haven't disclosed yet |

i wonder how they are able to differentiate 1st from 2nd. I suppose purchase date, or possible they changed the slip or the way it looks them up in the system. No idea, just hope mine was on the first wave. |

FYE is yanking your chain. There is NO WAY they know how many boxes they're going to get in any wave. This won't be decided until a ship date has been picked. They're making a best guess, just like all of the stores did w/ the 360. It's definitely better to sign up sooner rather than later though. |

So I if I sign up now and give FYE a $50.00 deposit and say the PS3 is released April 4th and it's now April 16th and they still haven't fulfilled my order can I cancel it and get my $50.00 back? |

I know about 5 peeps that pre-order the 360, I was one, and none of us ever saw that 360 on launch date. I got one from camping bb.com so why get excited on a pre-orders that from the 360 experience are useless. IMO |

you would just hold onto it and come the day you can get it just return it after purchased. they will not refund the $50 before purchase of the system.
and i'm in agreeance they have no idea what kind of launch quantity to expect or which 'wave' you are in, i just called another store and they have 30 people on their pre-order list so far and they said it is a first come first serve. plan to camp outside even if you have a pre-order. of course, to each their own and every store will most likely be a YMMV. there is a recent article on The Inquirer that says we should expect the launch date for North America to get pushed into the Fall of 2006.
it's all speculation, but the building is exciting (almost like BF). =) |

Sure, they have them "in development". We have our games "in development" using the specs Sony has given us and obviously a lot of the 360 code can be ported over like PS2 to original XBox. The problem is it's almost 2006, the hardware isn't close to being finalized and the dev kits aren't readily available. If you want to release next Christmas, both of those factors need to be in effect. With 360, Microsoft was pretty late finalizing the hardware, but we were able to still work with it because the hardware architecture was still pretty similar to original XBox. You can't assume that with PS2 to PS3 because there's at least a five year gap rather than the three the two Microsoft consoles had. Without the hardware finalized at this point, you could expect a lot of ported 360 games with a frantic attempt to improve the player models like happened with a lot of the PS2 games ported to the original Xbox. Which would be death at launch if the price point is substantially higher to the 360 due to the Blu Ray.

As part of its pre-E3 PlayStation 3 conference in May, Sony brought Epic Games cofounder Tim Sweeney on stage. Besides saying that Epic had already received a PS3 software-development kit--which he said was "easy to program"--Sweeney also performed a tech demo of a shooter running on PS3 hardware.
The game on display appeared to be Unreal Tournament 2007, the flashy-looking, Unreal Engine 3-based successor to the popular PC shooter Unreal Tournament 2004. However, neither Sony nor Epic would confirm when--or even if--UT 2007 would arrive on the PS3.
Seven months later, the two companies have broken their silence. The January 2006 issue of PlayStation Magazine proudly proclaims that, yes, UT 2007 is coming to the PlayStation 3. Inside, the magazine also reveals that the game will be a launch title for the PlayStation 3, which is tentatively slated for a spring 2006 launch.
UT 2007 for PS3 is the second Epic shooter announced for next-generation consoles. However, the first, Gears of War for the Xbox 360, is slated for a general "2006" release date, meaning it could conceivably come out after the PS3 UT 2007. |
