In for a Viewsonic 27" tv too!
The Syntax Olevia 30" tv is so tempting.

You must not have done an in-house CompUSA rebate in a while huh.. My $280 rebate back in April was the first to come in roughly 45 days and I was very impressed. Did a $250 rebate a few months later and it too came in about 45 days. I just bought a laptop from CompUSA and it's one of those 'eRebates' which I can file electronically. I actually prefer CompUSA rebates to manufacturer rebates.

I will definitely be going to CompUSA though I won't be one of those camping out to be first in line..so I know I won't get anything super good like the $299 AR laptop - but hopefully some decent stuff.

They do not plan to sell out until midnight the next day on these items ... Look back to the biggest midnight madness in history which was windows 95 ... the lines were 1500 people deep. Even if the lines are long this year, I can be in bed by 2am, instead of waking up at 3am ...Hate to burst the bubble. But this six-hour head start, coupled with the fact that most people are perfectly willing to stay up 'til 1:00 or 2:00 AM, means that the lines will be HUGE. There will be extraordinary competition.

And if these deals are as hot as you suggest, there is no way they will have enough stock -- it's not even physically possible. The example you use for comparison -- the milestone release of Windows 95 -- was for a small box of software, for which people were paying the full retail price ($90). In contrast, packaging for a single desktop, sans monitor, consumes the same space as multiple cases of software -- and ComputerUSAs aren't warehouses. Assuming these desktops will be offered for below-cost, demand will be off the chart.

In some ways, the only "hope" is that they employ their trademark staggered-sale approach -- with some sale items available from 1:00 - 2:00 AM, others from 2:00 - 3:00 AM, etc. This would force customers to cycle in and out of the store, allowing, to some extent, "the wealth to be shared".

Lastly, as far as lights-out by 2:00 AM goes, who are you kidding? Face it, you're a FatWalleter -- in all likelihood, it'll be a quick stop at Dunkin' Donuts, and then off to Best Buy.

Flashback: August 24, 1995 Windows 95 released at the stroke of midnight at CompUSA

Yep, but my plan would be to be at Fry's, which the last two years opened at 6:00am (7:00am in 2002). In Arlington, CUSA and Fry's are about 1.5 miles apart. And I expect Fry's to be awesome too. 18 days... Is that enough time to clone myself?

It appears as though the $299 laptop requires a year sign up of AOL. Not hot at all.

alert mods

The "299" laptop is really 549.99 if you dont want to sign-up for AOL (729 before rebates).

so they plan is to buy this stuff a few days before the sale then come back the same day to return/rebuy or the day after?

I've read the two competing lists:

List 1

List 2

at bf2005.net. Combined with the above posts warning of the need to subscribe to AOL, as Black Friday sales go, it's shaping up as a complete bust. Hopefully, these first reports are incorrect. If not, count me indifferent.

Depends on your store.. I had never done it at CompUSA, but at their last Midnight Madness sale I decided to chance it. The guy at the return counter was very indifferent about it and I was out in five minutes.

wow:

"Receive a $250 CompUSA gift card when signing up for 1 year of AOL Service"

How much for one year AOL? What's the catch?

alert mods

AOL service is 23.95 a month so you spend $287.40 to save $250.00

That's actually not bad, $3.12/month for a backup ISP with 7 email addresses. The only thing is trying to cancel the service after the 1-year (wasn't there something in the newspaper about AOL changing their practices regarding trying to keep customers from cancelling?)

Nope, he let me. By indifferent I meant he didn't care. This was the Sempron 3100+ Compaq (SR1520NX) for $199 AR. Awesome deal, came with a big hard drive and a DVDRW. I'm thinking about doing the return/rebuy thing but a) I don't want to chance being shot down and getting zilch, and b) I don't want somebody seeing me do he return/rebuy and come up to me and make a big deal about it.

A friend of a friend works at CompUSA so I'm going to see if I can get some info regarding the return/rebuy. In my opinion, CompUSA should post signs 21 days in advance of the Black Friday sale warning that BF pricematches and/or return/rebuys will NOT be done. It's not realy fair. Their pricematch policy is 21 days so this would cover them on the legal end of things.
