Thanks to FW's QuickSummary feature, we can now compose an easy-to read list of employee discount programs. Id like this one to concentrate mainly on RETAIL STORE discounts. Please post the basic details of each store's employee discount in the quick summary. I have copied many of the discounts posted in the archived thread, but they may be outdated. Feel free to correct them, and also feel free to discuss employee discounts, non retail store discounts, etc. by followup posts in this thread.
Knowing these RETAIL STORE discounts has several advantages for the savvy FW'er- some ppl can befriend store clerks and get their employee discount, and it can also help those considering seasonal/part time employment.

Circuit City was at store cost. I worked there from 2000-2002. Largest discounts were on home and car audio (40-50%), accessories (USB cables, etc.), cell phones could be quite cheap, etc. Could also order from "accommodations," which was direct from the vendors. Pices through them were typically below store cost. Don't know if/how it's changed now, but many of my paychecks went right back to the store .

Am I missing something here? I don't mean to disrespect, but what does this and haggling have to do with finance? ie: loans, mortgage, stocks, investing etc. Aren't these subjects better suited for the Deal Discussion Forum?

Employee Discounts and Haggling relate direclty to the finances needed to purchase items and services.
Sure, this could be placed under deal discussions, but why quibble?
It's 2006!

Employee Discounts and Haggling relate direclty to the finances needed to purchase items and services. If that's the case, then since all posts on FW relate to funds and purchase info they should be posted here. There's a reason for the sub categories. It makes it easier to find what you're looking for. I don't want to quibble either, but this doesn't belong in finance.

no Circuit City is no way at store cost... i bought a game for 45.77 when the retail is 50... When i work at bestbuy the games were 8 off a 50 game. USB cable for psp was 6 while at bestbuy its cheaper.. Circcuit city is no way selling at cost... also i bought the xbox 360 hard drive to sell online. i bought it for 91.77 and i only saved 9.00 the markup on it is more like 20% so theres no way it sells at cost. more like 10 % above cost. profit margin on electronics is like 25%. and profit margin on video games is 20%

Sorry to say but the above info for JCPenny's is wrong. Employees get 20% off everything in the store. My best friend is a JCP employee and I get to use her discount all the time!
And Mervyns has a 15% discount for employees...ditto for Target.

Employee discount at Circuit City is now cost + 40% of the normal markup...
I used to be a Circuit City manager (until about 4 months ago).
For a long, long time the discount was set by a formula. Then, CC decided to "experiment" and allow employees to purchase items at "cost." This program ended in the fall of 2003.
Example: an item retails for $300 and cost is $200. Employee purchase price is $240 ($200 + 40% of the $100 markup).
Employee purchase price at CC is not affected by sales promotions and cannot be combined with any coupons, free with purchase promotions, etc. Employees are usually allowed to purchase items as regular customers (at sale price, using coupons, free with purchase offers, etc) if that will be a better deal than the employee purchase price. Employees are usually not permitted to pricematch competitors, even if regular customers would be permitted to do so (all of this can vary a great deal depending on the individual's relationship with management).
The bottom line is that even though your managers may tell you that you are purchasing items at cost (that, altough a lie, is the directive in some stores), it is not true. If you are a CC manager, you can check this in DPS screen 53 (it might be another screen, but it is in the 50s).
Hope this helps.

I worked at cc back on commission and the days of true cost. seems like before that, they added in cost of shipping and a fee for using credit card. then went to cost. then decided people were making to much money, so fired the best sales people, hired a bunch of 18yr olds, and charged cost plus. what can you do? I stocked up though when I was there, and now who needs cost when you have fw??
anyway, sunglass hut is 50% off sunglasses every quarter.
this is a neat thread just to see what others get.

Lowes blows, besides the 10%, they up the discount to only 20% for a week in December, this year it was the second week of December. But they do have some handy coupons during that week for extra % off. I got 3 Dysons this year at 20% off (coupon) in addition to the promotional 20% off, for a total of 40% off.
