I dont get the posts regarding coupons being better now. Didnt Staples just make coupons useless in PM sales?
You want a printer for $200. You have a $30 off $150 coupon. That makes it $170. The same printer is at Office Depot for $145. You price match and they give you the printer for $142.50 (170 - 145 = $25, x 110% = $27.50)
Now, you DONT use your coupon. $200 PM'ed to $145 is $139.50 (200 - 45 = 55 x 110% = $60.50 PM)
You're better off NOT using your coupons, and save them for non-PM sales. Using a coupon on a PM sale is now effectively lighting the coupon on fire, as you'd get the same price with or without the coupon.

Taking off the coupon from the pm price was YMMV depending on csr. Mostly they did not care. I am sure this will change now. |

Here is a link to someone who copied the policy from 2002:

I don't see anything different.

I didn't think I saw anything different about the posted policy. The only difference would be if they start strictly enforcing it. |

Yeah, I think that verbiage has always been there. I even talked about that fine print in some hot deal thread months ago.

In related news, Yahoo now collects personal information about you and Google owns all your mail that goes through their Gmail system!
The day people stop and actually start reading the legalese is the day all these shocking sky-is-falling "news" bulletins come out.

dvdjunkee, THEbarry, maybe you need to start reading a lot more carefully lest you make a fool of yourself someday arguing about something you didnt read properly. until then, trust the rusty ol' FWers.
NJdude, 2002 was 4 yrs ago. its not very logical to jump to conclusions from dilapidated data. you got something from 2004/05 maybe? Staples written/published policy, for at least 2-yrs or so, until now was that Rebates DONT factor in PM price calculation. Now it does. what does that mean? the Samsung laser, the PAP2, the endless list wont happen if the NEW policy is enforced.

yeah, i notice the wording a 5 month ago, but i didn't have problem pricematching. it didn't just start. i think most of you just haven't read it lately, but its always been there. |

It certainly has not. The policy prior to today had a parenthetical phrase that said (but not mail in rebates) or something to that effect. The new policy has a parenthetical phrase that says the exact opposite. |

Because they put limit 5 and then did this "wait for corporate approval" bs then only pmed one, it was hard to find a Staples store that didnt get at least four back - plus they shipped them all ups as opposed to truck so they ate a ton of ups money, then they ate a ton of rebate money - this was not the way it had ever gone before.
RobinHan said:but how long has the "old" policy been? how come it took them years (i assumed) to figure that out? i heard ppl talking about 1350w deals for several times before i actually bought one last month. still don't get why this time was so special.
riffparker said:They must be bleeding money - they will probably try a ton more stuff like this until they crumble - I agree with the OfficeMax comment - but I am sure we will probably see many more of these situations in the next couple of years, you just have to follow the money. Keep switching retail categories and you will always get free stuff or get paid to take stuff.
The comments about New York and Flushing are pig-headed. I live in Queens and pricematch just like everyone else, it's no "harder" here then anywhere else. If you lived in Alaska you might have a point.
I am guessing that the thing that finally sent them over the edge was the last batch of laser printers, how they sold out in four minutes, and then not only recieved most of them back to retail locations causing a huge expense in the supply chain, but then how the rebate house overpaid rebates. I would not be surprised if the last laser printer deal alone cost Staples over a million dollars.
The irony here is that CompUSA is now "cheap". |

I found the hard-evidence. This is the 03/2005 version:
How do Staples coupons and rebates contribute to the Staples price?
We¡¯ll deduct any available Staples coupons and instant rebates (but not mail¨Cin rebates) from the Staples price to arrive at a net price. For example, if you buy an item from us for $100 and we offer a $20 instant rebate, the net price is $80. If another company¡¯s price is $80 or more, we will not match the price. Another example: if you buy an item from us for $159 and you have a $30 coupon, the net price is $129. If another company¡¯s price is $125, your price match would be $4.40 (110% of the difference).

I just ordered something from Staples with a $20 off $150 coupon, and got a sucessful FULL PM....
EDIT: details: I first went to Staples chat and asked if I would be able to pricematch office 2003 student edition to CompUSA @129.99, they said yes, so then I said what about pagecomputers @$124.99, they also said yah, so then I placed an order using a 20off 150 coupon, then gave the csr my order number, and he refunded me $29.xx. |
