Please post any other deals/add-ons/accessories that would go good with this laptop. TIA!
One question...(this is the First laptop I've owned & the first time I'm going to try going wireless...) will the "Wireless Networking Built-in Atheros high-speed wireless LAN (802.11b/g)" already included in the laptop and the wireless-router that I am to purchase - be all that I will need to 'keep other people (neighbors) who also have a wireless notebook' OFF of my internet connection?
I am going to call Toshiba tomorrow and see if I can get a deal on the extended battery. Their site it takes 1-2 weeks to ship but I will need it sooner than that. I couldn't find any other reliable source online with the battery in stock. I've gone thorugh 2 battery cycles and the battery life isn't as bad as I had thought. 1 hour 20 minutes the first time and 1 hour 45 minutes the second.

Thanks for starting this thread Deal986. I just picked up my Toshiba from BB today, and will watch this thread for deals on all the accessories. Must get some more ram for sure, probably a case, etc.
I am curious about the warranty described above. BB has a two year add on warranty that supposedly covers the battery. The CSR says near the end of the two years, just bring it in, and they will give you a new battery. I am wary of such claims. Anyone have some experience with such at BB?
Props to the OP for giving me props in his post! Here's another little tidbit to help out all who are in search of the extended 8 cell battery direct from Toshiba as posted in this thread.
Take an additional 10% off at checkout using code HXXAB03 ( the 0 is the number zero)
Brings the price down to $89.99 + CHEAP shipping( i got $2.53 for ground and ONLY $8 or so for next day)+ tax if any in your state
Go get em!

Inside the laptop box is there not a 15% off Toshiba direct coupon for first time customers? Will this stack? =D
Better brand than the gigaram, but then if you dont mind the rebates why not just go Corsair right?

yes they will offer 1 battery replacement for the life of the service plan, this used to be different with no limit . it also covers replacement of accessory items like power adapters. sometimes they may require you to send back the old battery once the new one is received, though this has never happened to me.
I just reformated and did a fresh install of Windows XP Pro. Download all the drivers from the Toshiba website and it all works great.
Now I'm looking for another cheap 256MB of ram on fleabay. I don't want to spent more then $15 for the stick. Anybody want to sell me their stick if you are upgrading to more memory and want to get rid of your 256MB. Please PM me. thanks
laptop is not bad for $399.99 + tax. I thought it would be a real cheapo model. so far so good.

But all the useless programs you deleted! Notebook Maximizer! >_>
Can you get Notebook Maximizer on Toshiba's site? I was thinking of formatting mine and putting Windows Media Center for my 360 then I could use an external HD and stream videos.
what is Notebook Maximizer? I never used it so no clue. I always reformat and install my own programs when I get a new laptop. There is just too much crap installed out of the box.
maybe that application is on the CD that came with the box. I never opened the CD to see what is on there.

Doesn't really do too much, it just shows the battery level I think. Well, thats all I used it for.

I don't know if I should buy a 256 or 512MB RAM upgrade... will a dual channel configuration make any difference?

I thought the Windows built in power management thing shows also the battery level. I prefer to have minimal stuff installed and not tons of things starting up when windows boots.

I would think Windows would have the battery power. I will probably format my lappy and load media center on it. Then enable endless possibilities with my 360. Anyone use an external source to stream videos with 360 before?
If you don't need a lot of graphic power, you can reduce the shared video ram in half by pressing F2 during boot up to go to the BIOS setup page, then change the video memory from 64 to 32.
was about to try, but on second thought, do not want to disqualify for warranty at this point. Let us know your results... thanks!

I was not sure until I had to take my VAIO for a battery change and yes it was as seamless as you can imagine, the guy took the warranty card looked in his system gave me some paper with a number on it. I called the 800 number with the order number from the guy at best buy and the battery was there at my place in a week.

I thought this laptop only had 1 SODIMM slot ... does it have two?
it has two slots. 1 slot taken with a 256MB stick.

*****OVERCLOCKING UPDATE*****
I have successfully OVERCLOCKED using pin-mod to 2.13GHz. I have been running Prime95 on it for the past 1hr. and with ABSOLUTELY NO ERRORS!! this is screaming fast. Also someone was asking if it had 1 used slot for the memory or two. It is just 1 x 256mb DDR2 that is included.
Have not done any thermal tests yet... i.e. temperature of cpu, battery load, etc... but I know that it is stable at 2.13GHz running at 533 FSB. It is noticably faster.
Some more thoughts...
It is super-easy to pull this laptop apart. I would suggest EVERYONE to use this technique to increase performance. I will post pictures later.
Does anyone have the actual ad that shows $399? I am trying to PM but having difficulty. I would paypal you expenses, and you would be helping out a fellow FW'r! Thanks!

please check your PM about a stick for $15

FYI on the Toshiba direct 1 year standard warranty:
Toshiba Direct = Toshiba 1st Year Extended Service Plan WSN-PNQQ1V $79.00
When I was setting up my laptop, I chose to register online with Toshiba, and it offered me this plan for $62.xx or $63.xx and I took it (on 1 of the two I purchased . It was about 20% off.

It is still 100% stable. It's been running different Prime95 benchmark and torture tests since late this morning. Haven't had a chance to let it drain in order to calculate battery life. However, I did install a CPU temperature monitoring program, and on full load for the past 90minutes, it's been maxing at 61 - 63 degrees. On Idle, it's 48degrees.
Can someone confirm how hot it is at normal cpu speed?? I will post more info as it becomes available.
I am also modding another of the same system that I purchased. Let's see if I get similar results

I have centrino hardware control monitoring mine and it shows 52-53 under normal circumstances.

Did you use artic silver?
I'm using CHC as well and it is 51 - 54 degrees under idle and regular usage. I.e. web browsing, e-mail, iTunes playing a playlist. What is your definition of 'normal circumstances' for comparison sake???

No arctic silver was available. I used some white thermal grease that I had lying around that came with a Zalman CPU cooler. I think results should be similar.

battery life will suck with the included battery, but if you are overclocking, its something that you just need to accept.Battery life already sucks with the included battery. I just want to know if it sucks 50% worse or some lower acceptable level of suckitude.
