Stores which would be rejected by Amex BVG

I am not sure if anyone has started this topic. According to my recent failed BVG experience, I feel the need to start a thread that would address this particular concern for my fellow FWers who use AMEX BVG.

I have been rejected twice when I tried to use CircuitCity(cc) BVG Staples, the reasons were the same: CC have their own PM policy.

So let me start with CC. Are there any other stores on the blacklist as well? Please contribute your experience so people could avoid potential losses.

Thanks,

Flea

Bump myself. Just got off the phone with BVG rep, she couldn't release a store list which they would reject.

Look for sunnysky's post, and there are complains from other members as well.

CompUSA BVG Fry's, same reason: CompUSA has their own PM policy.

I must be incredibly lucky then, because I've never had a CC or CompUSA purchase rejected by BVG. In fact, I've never been rejected for a BVG except for one time when I tried to use a photo magazine's ads to BVG a camera. AMEX had a list of camera stores whose ads they wouldn't accept, which turned out to be pretty much every store in the magazine that had a lower price than I paid.

I also saw the "CC reject" part of the thread mentioned above so when I called to BVG a Memorex flash drive I asked the CSR about CC. She said as far as she knew they weren't disallowing BVG's for stuff purchased at CC. That claim was paid on 3/6/06.

Here's a list of my approved BVG's for purchases at these two retailers....
9/12/05 CC to Fry's
10/21/05 CC to Fry's
11/9/05 CompUSA to Fry's
12/7/05 CompUSA to Staples
12/7/05 CC to SurplusComputers
12/30/05 CC to OM
1/19/06 CompUSA to OM
1/23/06 CompUSA to Staples
3/6/06 CC to OM

So we need to figure out what's different between my claims and the ones of people who are getting rejected.

I have submited both of my rejected claims within one month after purchase period, which is still within the PM duration. Maybe that is the reason?

Also, there are two time points involved here, Claiming time and BVG ads time. Which one really matters? Madib, would you check your BVG time frame to work this out?

Yes, good suggestion, but this isn't going to help as you will see.

I nearly always wait until the end of the 60 day submittal period, just in case I find a better deal, but the purchase date vs advertisement date are all over the place and some are certainly within the PM policy limits.

The first dates are the submittal dates and I've added the dates of the original purchase and the ad dates.

(note, I corrected a couple of errors in my original list)
9/12/05 CC to Fry's..........Purch 7/11, Ad 9/2
10/21/05 CC to Fry's.........Purch 8/28, Ad 10/4
11/9/05 CompUSA to Fry's.....Purch 9/10, Ad 10/5
12/7/05 CC to Staples........Purch 10/23, Ad 10/23
12/7/05 CC to SurplusComp....Purch 10/23, Ad 12/8
12/30/05 CC to OM............Purch 11/23, Ad 12/26
1/19/06 CompUSA to OM........Purch 11/19, Ad 12/26
1/23/06 CompUSA to Staples...Purch 11/25, Ad 11/25
2/28/06 CC to OM.............Purch 12/29, Ad 12/26

I was sweating the last one because I was submitting it just after the thread appeared with someone saying thet BVG was not allowing CC claims. I was double sweating it because I bought the product 3 days AFTER the weekly ad came out!

FWIW, I just had my last 3 BVG claims rejected because of the store pricematch policy. I got this news about 2 weeks ago. In these cases, it was Staples, pricematched to a Staples price advertised less than a week later, so I can't complain that AMEX is out of bounds. I have, however, done such matches for a long time without problems. My guess is that they are just tightening up their enforcement of BVG terms, and that it is not a blanket rejection of all claims involving Staples, just the claims where the advertised price is within Staples pricematch period. At this point, I would consider any such claims to be YMMV.

Spoke with a BVG CSR and he reiterated that they aren't doing blanket rejections. He said that if stores do have a PM policy and you've made a valid effort to make use of the policy and were unsuccessful, AMEX would still honor the BVG. When asked how they would know if you tried to PM or not, he was a bit evasive and said they do a lot of research on each claim and often times it's obvious that people are taking advantage of the system. As you can see from my data points, some of my claims were outside of the PM period, so that's one "out" for me. But others were clearly still within the PM policy of the store I bought the items from and they still approved them.

I dunno.

99% of the photo shops in the back of the major photography magazines are on the blacklist as well.

May be you want to mention which card you have that being reject. I have a gold AMEX and pricematch on purchased from CC and never have problem.

Mine, too. With $150 annual fee and still got rejected, that is really frustrated.

Maybe you should have the platinum care with $390 annual fee

Mine's the Costco Business card with no annual fee, so that certainly can't be an issue since I've never been rejected. (Now that I've posted that claim numerous times I'm sure karma is going to catch up with me and I'll never get another BVG approved again!)

Looks like they are denying BVG for any purchase from stores that already have PM policy.

"Items purchased from a store that already has an established lowest price guarantee program will not be covered under Best Value Guarantee."

Also, I wasn't able to refile a new claim (w/ different ad , different time) for the same item once it is denied. This is for the most recent CompUSA purchase (filed 3/5).

If no more BVG for purchases from Staples, CompUSA, CC, Bestbuy, etc, then what stores are left out there?

I was recently denied for PMin'g CC to Staples.

Did you get that quote from their website? Usually they send an update to their policy if it changes. What if the store has a 30 day price match and AMEX is 60 days?

This isn't a new policy, it just seems like they are finally enforcing it for some claims. But both CSR's I've asked about this insist that they aren't automatically rejecting claims from stores that have their own low price thing.

Your point about the ad coming out after the end of a store's guarantee period is very valid and should be sufficient to validate a BVG claim. Another out should be getting shot down for a PM because of something like when CC claims that Fry's "Limit 1 per Customer" keeps them from approving a PM. Like the last BVG CSR told me, if you've made a legitimate attempt to PM and were unsuccessful, then we'll approve the BVG claim.

Does anybody know if they PM to Sams or Costco? Also, I know you need a paper add to send in...but those places dont usually have paper ads. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Same here. Just got CC, Fry's, and OD rejected. On the OD claim, OD refused to PM CompUSA cuz they were out of stock. I told AMEX that and they said I can talk to an adjuster about it.

I even told the rep that they should just close the whole program down since it's so difficult to use now.

No longer takes fax for evidence and you must send it the whole ad (not just a lower page). Then only if you get lucky.

AMEX BVG sucks IMO. Use the Citi Diamond perferred card with its price protection. I have never had a problem yet.

have you tried PM the advertise from the camera store in NY.

Even though stores have 30day price guarantee, they will do it only if the ad is active.
So let's say my claim was filed outside the active lower price ad window then AMEX should still honor it.

Anyone tried that argument?
I just received my first reject involving CompUSA and CC.

I had at least 4 or 5 rejections from AMEX BVG. Since then, I haven't used my AMEX Gold.

Good thing about AMEX is if BVG fail, you can use the return protection. I never have any problem with AMEX so far, the latest one I file just got approve, I file the claim less than a week after I purchased the item.

i have a couple of claims pending with them. They have asked for more documentation and are taking more time to process the claims. If even one of my claims is rejected then i am going to cancel the card. Nice while it lasted.

Any recent claims price matching to a store with pricematch policy? Were you successful within the 14 or 30 day window, or outside the 14/30 day window?

Thanks.
