Okay i need some advice and this could turn into a hot deal for the accord price. i ill explain below.
I currently own my 2004 Chevy Silverado LS 1500 . i have the pink slip. however i now commute to work and with gas prices climbing.....and filling the gas tank At Least ONCE A WEEK at $70.00 a fill up, and sometimes once on Monday and Once on Friday to make it back and forth. I started considering a different vehicle.
so i decided to look at a 2006 honda accord LX SE 4 cyl. I am looking to trade in my Silverado. Dealer says they will give me $14750.
Blue book on the truck at fair condtion is 14885. so not too bad there.
the 2006 Accord they will sell it to me for $19750 plus tax lic doc. (Again MSRP is $22,225.00) Pretty hot deal there..
based on my figures ( they could be higher this is just an estimate) Silverado approx 17 MPG Honda accord approx 26 mpg approx 9 miles per gallon diff. SInce the accord gas tank is smaller
lets multiply 9 MPG X 17 Gallons = i get 153 Miles more miles on the accord per tank
Given if the tanks where both completely empty it would cost
to fill up the sliverado at $3.00 per gallon. would be $78.00 to fill up the accord at $3.00 per gallon it would be $51.00
Difference per week approx $27.00 X 4 weeks $108.00
The payment on the new accord will be $131.00 after trade in for 5 years.
my other consideration is that the silverado will be out of warranty in May of next year . the accord base warranty is 3 years.
what do you guys think? is the accord worth going for? i am trying to keep the payments low. hence the se and not the hybrid.
also if you PM me i can lewt you know the dealer with this price in No cal SF bay Area
I think the value of a car depreciates the most in the first 3 years so the prudent financial decision would be to buy a used 2003 or 2004 Honda. Or take the bus.
GM's fall in value fast, but hondas don't fall in value as fast in the first few years
accord is something like 30mpg and the truck around half that so you will probably see good fuel economy results. and the accord will keep it's value better so if you want to get a new one in a few years you will get a better trade in value
If you worry that much about money, get a Civic or Fit. They are cheaper and get better gas mileage.

Isn't this just yet another "Tell me it's OK to buy a new car every three years" thread?

If mileage is your primary concern, why not get a hybrid civic, prius, or whatever? If finance is your primary concern, why not get a 2-4 yr old Accord/Civic/Corolla/Mazda/etc and get both $$ savings and mileage benefits?
Right now you're kind of splitting the difference, and losing financially without much gain in terms of mileage.
who said anything about loosing my job? also not hopkinis. Civic is too small for our family and so is the prius. not worring about money, just would like to do something else with it.
i do like the idea about a 2 to 3 year old accord. but with out a warranty, if something goes wrong, i will kick my self in the butt for not getting soimething newer.
You could buy a "Certified" used Honda, but I'm not sure how cost effective the entire certified program is, perhaps someone else on the board could shed light on that.
Although I am in no technical position to say this, I would say that with Honda's track record of producing quality vehicles, if you were to buy a 3 year old Honda, get it checked out by a mechanic you trusted and he/she found nothing wrong, you could, with a significant degree of confidence, sacrifice the extended warranty for the savings. (That's one sentence and six commas, btw.)
Did you consider the other car manufacturers who offer longer warranties than Toyota or Honda?

Honda 4 cylinders don't need a warranty. I would also strongly consider the '07 Camry. But the smart money would be on a '03 Accord, first year of current body style. FWIW, you should be able to get another $500 or so off that not so hot price, the new '07 camry is cooling off the accord sales right now.

Or look into a '02 camry or better yet the '02 ES300. The rest is up to you...

Also, it seems like you are getting more emotionally wrapped up in this deal than you should be. If you came by my dealership, I would have sold you 2 Accords by now while I cruise around in your old truck loading up stuff at Home Depot. Relax and think for a couple of days.

One last thing. If you can find a used car still under the factory warranty, you can add the respective manufacturer's extended warranty.

And so long as he has it in the privacy of his own home, why should that be anyone else's business?
Price for the Accord sounds very high. The LX SE can be bought at $18,500 including freight, tax and registration extra.
Also, if you have a Carmax near by, drop your truck off with them for a quick quote. Might do better than the dealer quote.
Also, I wouldn't settle for an interest rate that is higher than 6% and really, you should be able to come up with the cash to pay for the difference.
Edit: To the OP, if you don't feel like wasting time looking for a used late model Honda or Toyota, don't. The resale value on those cars are very high and you would be saving a small amount buying used versus new, especially one of those "certified used" cars on a dealer's lot. The guys here expect you to find a diamond in the rough where the private seller or dealer for some reason was absolutely out of his gord and sold you a nice car for far below market price. Deals like that can be found but they are few and far in between. There are perfectly good reasons to buy a used car, and if you really can't come up with the cash to pay for the difference, you probably shouldn't be looking at a new car. My personal inclination is to buy new for cars that hold their value, and buy used for cars that do not.

At 230,000 miles it just continues to march on! It uses NO oil and the only things replaced are: tires, timing belt X 2, battery, a cv boot and one axle. It's never been garaged and the paint is very good. The interior is excellent. For a car with this many miles, it's a darn good looking car.

Off topic question. How do you get the free trade in estimate at carmax? Are they good? Do they require SSN to run an estimate on your car? I am worried because I don't want these creeps running my credit when all I wanted to do was get a trade in quote on my accord 2002. Thanks!
Why not keep the truck (since it's paid for) and buy a cheap car $2,000-$4,000 to drive to work?
I got a really decent 1999 Dodge Stratus for $4500 (from a dealer) about 2 years ago because of gas prices. I was driving a 1997 Toyota Tacoma that got less than 20MPG. I kept my truck (since it was paid for) and bought the car (in cash). It gets about 30MPG. The car is "old", but it hasn't cost me anything other than gas and maintenance.
I don't put much stock in to a warranty. Have you ever had warranty work done? Any time I have ever tried to have warranty work done it turns in to a huge hassle (dealership doesn't want to cover the work under warranty).

"Burns" no oil. haha ie you put 5 quarts in then 3k miles later you take 5 quarts out.
If you want better MPG, look at the Corolla and Civic, they get close to 40mpg. Even better would be a VW TDI(Golf, Jetta or Beetle), they get 50 to 60 mpg for around the same price as that accord)
okay thank you all for the advice. i decided to trade in the truck and pay cash for the difference. still no payment , just wont be doing much fatwallet shopping now... oh the biggest thing i bought a 2007 camry instead.
