This is what I found at tracfone website about the refer-a-friend program:
"Thank you for your interest in TRACFONE Refer-A-Friend! At this time, we are making improvements to the program, and new enrollments and referrals are not being accepted. However, if you recently visited this page and then referred someone to TRACFONE through this program, and he or she becomes a new TRACFONE subscriber by following the steps in the program and no later than October 15, 2006, you will each still receive the benefits. Please refer below to the terms and conditions if you have questions about the TRACFONE Refer-A-Friend program.
We are working to build a new and improved Refer-A-Friend program, with better tools to service you and your friends.
Thanks again for your support of TRACFONE - customers like you are so important to helping us grow, and we're committed to providing a great Refer-A-Friend program to reward you for sharing the TRACFONE story with your friends and contacts.
TRACFONE Wireless, Inc. "
Anybody has any idea what is going on with the program?
no, but I just referred a friend recently and am waiting for the email with the 120 minutes. I hope it doesn't get lost in the changes.

It's been buggy as hell for the last few years so I'm glad they're revamping it. Whatever system they have in place now is simply awful..

Many people are referring themselves. I bought a tracfone and got a referral from someone else then I bought another tracfone and referred myself. $20 , 4 months and 150 minutes. Planned on just doing this every 4 months after my contract ran out on my cellphone. I bet there will be a stop on this kind of referral.

My guess is that they will replace it with a program that makes difficult or impossible for people to use the refer a friend program for profit (i.e. eBay).

I am not sure the refer a friend program is still working now? I have a old Tracfone cell, It is already deactivated. If I want to add some airtimw, could someone refer me, so both of us can get 120 min free? Thanks.

The referral is only once per ESN. Generally the phone also needs to be active, so you might be out of luck.

Darn it! I just bought a new phone this afternoon at CVS. I was counting on the refer-a-friend program to put minutes on the new phone and give the one I bought last month to my mom. Unfortunately, that seems to be out now. I was smart enough to send myself a referal e-mail last month. Too bad that I finally found it and see that it expired last Saturday - LOL. So, i'll have to wait to activate the new phone, until they open up refer-a-friend again.

I have done the refer a friend several times both for internal use, friends, and some eBay sales.
They usually have a deal to buy a 40minute card and get a refurb phone free. So I buy the card deal, and sell the refurb phone for a couple of bucks but get the referal minutes. I get the 40minte card, and 120 referal minutes. Not much eBay profit here as I sold the phone for $1.99+ shipping. Tracfone gets a new user who may buy airtime cards from retail in the future. I know of at least some of these phones have.
I hope they keep some type of referal program.
BTW, the last time I did this the referal phone got the 120 minutes + 2 months email right a way but my phone never did. I had to call and they put the minutes on the phone, but I did not get the extra 2 months, which is what i really wanted.
I use the tracfone mostly for my children to carry for emergencies. If they lose a $20 phone it's no big deal.

TracFone is really bad. They offered free shipping and other promotion just before taking the referral program away. People have bought millions of phones. Without referral, they lose a lot of minutes and service time. This is a conspiracy.

I just added a refer a friend email from June and it still worked with the bonus code. 2months + 120 refer friend + 60 bonus minutes. Just wanted the extra time anyways since I never use the phone. Good luck for the rest of you guys/gals.

I tried with a referral from August and it said the promotion had ended.

wow, I had no idea this program had been scrapped, indefinitely or not. I had to come here to make sure it was true. I just bought a year card and phone and was hoping to get referral minutes when the phone is activated, but I guess not. Glad I got in one last referral back in July of this year before the gravy train left the station. Hopefully they will bring it back by December 25 or later.

Anyone know if you can call up for a refer-a-friend? They still have a link on their site, but it just shows a letter saying they're making improvements.
