I believe it:

1. lcd prices are dropping so much & so fast it's not even funny...

2. some major players reporting sub-par figs for latest year / quarter

3. analysts all over predicting gloomy holiday shopping season & flat economy, so:

A. value trumps high-end this go-round

B. retailers AND manufacturers will compete fiercely....

I love how you said making "us" tons of money. Isn't commission at CC dead and gone. Do you own stock in CC?

Yup. And no bulb to wear out. The laser is supposed to last the life of the set. Half the weight, cheaper, and thinner than LCD. Coming out in 2007.

From what I've read it's supposed to be thinner, lighter than Plasma. When Laser TV does come out the price will be competitive with plasma, not neccessarily cheaper. Yes, it'll be cheaper to manufacture, but it will take a while for the savings to trickle down to the consumer. LCD's will still be the choice for under 45" screens, as Laser tv is posed to compete and possibly overtake the market for 50"+ screen plasmas. I don't see the prices of laser tv's becoming drastically "cheaper" compared to plasmas for at least 2 yrs after it's release - every consumer pays an early adopter tax - so basically whatever you buy now, expect to use it for at least the next 2.5 yrs, unless your willing to pay a premium price. Just MHO.

LOL. TV's sure our getting dangerous. First we had Plasma, and now we're going to get LASER!! I know there is nothing actually dangerous about them, it just sounds funny. Maybe we'll have a nuclear TV by 2010.

See Mitsubishi Touts Laser TV

This is DLP (Digital Laser Projection) technology (as apposed to Light). 52" and above - 12" deep Provides a much better picture than even Plasma. Should be priced slightly more than the DLP sets with bulbs but lasers should last for years. Gives better blacks as laser actually turns off (mercury light can't).

This is made possible by LED's getting so much brighter. Same technology allows for far brighter Silicon Lasers as well.

I would consider one. The bulb in DLP's cost a minimum of $400 and only last for about 1500 hours of use. Cost nearly as much as some sets.

Then there is Laser TV: The Next-Gen Screen? Laser technology can produce twice the color content that can be generated by LCD or plasma

“The sweet spot in the market that everyone is gunning for is 50” sell for under $1,000,” Mr. Niven said. “That’s where we feel where laser TV, and that makes it affordable.”

finally Wikipedia
* are half the weight and cost than Plasma or LCD displays
* require 75% less power than Plasma or LCD displays
* are very thin like Plasma and LCD displays are today
* have a very wide color gamut
* can be very small, for use in mobile phone or PDA technology
* have a 50,000 hour life

Says manufactures are NOT planing on using it but that is wrong. At least Mitsubishi is. Though there is not a date certain at this point.

I read that quote also, but the real question is: WHEN do they propose to hit that "sweet spot"? I highly doubt that the introduction of Laser tv will be a 50" for $1K. Would be nice but I do see it as unlikely.

The article talking about Mitsubishi's development above also says the 62" model is 10" deep, that is not "very think like Plasma and LCD displays are today", that is thin, but hardly the same as an LCD or plasma at 2-3" deep.

once they ramp up production... nothing's impossible. if they could produce unlimited amounts, why wouldn't they? assuming plasmas and lcd's come to ~2k for a 50", then a l-a-s-e-r at 1k isn't too far fetched.

i'd be over a 50" for 1k like a ... well, insert your own PC quip here.

Yeah, and so would everybody else, but it's just not gonna happen in the near future. Remember the prices when plasmas were first released? I think the lowest introductory price will be around 2.5K on the low side. I don't think we'll see the 1K price for at least 2 yrs after it's release.

The funny thing is that CC has the Sharp Aquios for $1000 right now. $200 cheaper than BB on BF. LOL
