I got my Everex as replacement today. I was first in online on BF to order the Averatec 2370. Although I did get a laptop, I am still not happy because I still felt that OfficeMax cheated (did not fulfill my order)
What do you guy plan to do about it? |

I received the Everex stepnote SA2050T and I am pleasantly surprised. The specs on the web site are different than on the box, which is amazing. (Web site now corrected.) First, the laptop is made by the identical manufacturer as the Averatec. One look at the two and its obvious. Second, they really are comparable. The averatec has a dual turion. The everex has a intel T2050 core. ABout comparable, turion is slightly better. The averatec has a NVidia Go 6100. The everex has a GMA 950, at least on the outside of the box. About comparable, averatec is slightly better. The averatec comes with no disks, you can only generate with a hack a complete restore disk. The Everex comes with a XP media restore DVD. Everex wins hands down here. All else is mostly identical. The two have different screens, but not sure which one is better. The everex is brighter, but the averatec seems to have better readability, if that makes any sense. I was planning to send it back once I received it, but now will keep it. The decision maker was the GMA950 chip. For the $540+tax I paid, its a good deal. COmpare with the $399 or even $350 laptops on BF, which were Celerons: Core duo (+$100), 1 GB vs 512MB (+$50), DVD writer vs cdrw (+$50), 100 GB vs 40 GB (+$60), XP Media vs XP Home (+$20) = +$280 -> $350 + $280 = $630 without counting the subnotebook premium. Officemax did ok by them according to this analysis. SO I am pleasantly surprised! |

I have an interesting case. On BF I ordered in store, and they told me it would take a few days. Later during that day, they called from the store telling me that my computer was ready. I drove down, and in fact, the computers were available (I assume the truck arrived and had the machines) I paid for the laptop and the manager cancelled my order from the morning.
I was on vacation for Christmas, and guess what! Oficemax delivered a package while I was out. The UPS driver just left it without any signature. Fortunately my neighbor picked the package that had been sitting for days outside because it was going to rain....
Anyways, I opened it and I found the everex 2050. I already turned it on to verify it is OK, and it is a very nice machine too (I still think the 2370 is nicer, but they are very close). I don't think I will keep the machine, so more than likely I will return it or dump it on the bay. However, I would prefer to have a fellow FWer keep it, so FW members get dibs on the laptop. If anyone wants it, PM with an offer.
