I disagree. Vista's Aero interface will require a lot of GPU horsepower. CAD programs will also do better with robust video. You'd be better off saying vector processing than 3D. |

Good luck finding a 12.1" to match these features for less than 1200.
12.1" Dual core 12.1" 100GB Sata 1gb ddr2 dual layer dvdrw 12.1" nVidia Geforce video 4 pounds etc etc etc A true "High End" laptop challenger for 599.
does it have wi-fi?

Yes, It has Wireless B/G. Who would by a laptop without it now? Of course none of them have Super G or Wireless N yet (there is always something better...) It does not have Bluetooth which is nice to have in a laptop. |

I'd go for the biggest bang for the buck on the Intel Core 2 Duo laptops. |

OP--Thank for starting the thread and getting the ball rolling.
With Vista coming, it isn't very short sighted not to hold out for dual core? So what is you save $100 to $150 on a single core and have to upgrade again in 12 months. Isn't better to buy a dual core now with at least 1000m of RAM?
For the wizards that know that stuff how about ranking?
Single cores Ranked 1.
2.
3.
Dual Core
1.
2.
3.
Thanks

There's 3D animation, CAD, simulation & visualization, etc. Also, even if it handles basic Aeroglass, how will it be when you have 20 windows open at once? I do that all the time, and anyone who notices a difference between dual core and single core is probably a heavy multitasker also.
When Intel integrated struggles at 640x480 for games, I don't see how it can smoothly handle 1440x900. It might be a higher drain on the battery as well if the drivers use the CPU a lot. |

Guys the next question to ask apart from which deal is the best, is which deal are we going to get. Only a few will get the door buster, which ones are the "most likely" that most can get, i.e not the door busters. If A or B, is the best but majority cannot get it, which is the next best that we stand a higher and safer choice that we can snatch one. |

People have already tried. |

Okay, I've read through the thread (and wow, you guys rock with all the info!), but my question takes a slightly different approach:
What is the best laptop/deal for a Christmas present for a 12-year-old? Our daughter is at that age where she needs one for homework, etc. She's not much of a gamer (prefers semi-social sites like Millsberry and VMK), no MySpace or anything like that where she'd want to have lots of storage room for photos; basically just needs a decent computer that will work well for online ventures and productivity applications (and for that, a computer that would come with Office preloaded would be ideal).
Suggestions? All input/information is greatly appreciated!

I have a question.
I'm interested in the following...
CC Acer AS5102WLMI, Turion64 X2 TL-50, 1gb, 120gb, dvdrw, XP-MCE, 15.4” ----------------- $599.99
STAPLE-S Toshiba A105-S4224, Core Duo T2050, 512mb, 100gb, dvdrw, XP-MCE, 15.4” ---------------- $699.98
What is their video card info? all integrated graphics? Does "integrated graphics" mean that they dont have a separate video card?
and does anyone have more details about these 2 laptops? such as: do they have bluetooth? which battery life is better?
Thank you! |

I don't think any of the BF laptops will come with Office. Based on your listed requirements, and the fact that this is a thread only about Black Friday Laptops, then any cheapo will do.
But, IMO, if you are the type of person who is planning on buying a 12 year old a laptop for christmas, you could forget this BF stuff and wait for a Dell deal that includes free or cheap upgrade to Office. |

Sun Microsystems offers their StarOffice Suite for free for students. I use it every day and am quite happy with it. I have no problems going back and forth with documents between it and Office. |

all of them have integrated graphics .. and yes this means they do not have a separate video card ... the graphics memory is shared from the system RAM ...
why dont u google for the specs? the acer's specs are everywhere ... BTW, no bluetooth on either laptop ...
here is a link to a very similar Toshiba - the S4244 - A105-s4244 - the s4224 is not on the Toshiba website ...

Regardless, the Averatec looks like a good deal. I'll try to pick one up for my wifey. |

You should also consider Open Office at http://www.openoffice.org. This is the same code base used for Sun's StarOffice. It's free, the differences are minor, and you won't have to worry about licensing restrictions. |
