Personally I think the HP Core Solo @ Bestbuy is the best deal right now.. I really wanted to get my hands on a core2duo but none are on sale at the moment. Do you think I should wait till a regular sale or is this the best it will get in the next few months?

Would you consider the Acer Turion x2 @ 599 from CC a good deal? Specs: 1gb ram, 120gb hd, dvd burner, 15.4".

I say the BEST is the Averatec at OM. Its the only lappy listed that is priced well below normal prices. All of the others are only incrementally cheaper than they would be on any given weekend "blowout sale". This laptop is as fully featured as can be expected even on a high end laptop. Good luck finding a 12.1" to match these features for less than 1200.
12.1" Dual core 12.1" 100GB Sata 1gb ddr2 dual layer dvdrw 12.1" nVidia Geforce video 4 pounds etc etc etc A true "High End" laptop challenger for 599.

What about the Compaq Presario Notebook w/ AMD Turion 64 ML-28, 512MB RAM, 60GB Hard-Drive. 15.4” Wide-Screen Display for $399.98 (no rebates) at Staples? How does this compare to the BB Core Solo?

Yeah.. I honestly don't have a clue as far as notebooks go. Aside from the processor, the specs look pretty close. The BB one has a 80GB HD vs 60 though.
Most likely I'd go for the BB, but since it'll most likely be sold out two minutes after the store opens, I might end up heading over to Staples and pick that one up instead.
All the laptops will be sold out before any of the stores open. You have to go get a voucher.

It's close between the Acer and Averatec. I love the Averatec specs, but they seem a little iffy as far as computer construction and company reputability. Acer Avisos are consistently getting good reviews.
Although I'd love to have that 12 inch screen, I just don't know if I can risk getting an Averatec.

It means it is for the crazy few who will camp out. Some people stay there overnight. Doorbuster deals are like a reference what they can do later the year.
How does the AMD Turion 64 X2 compare to the Core Solo?
according to anandtech, Intel Core Duos are better than AMD duos hand down, but compared to amd turion 64x2 and intel core solo, what are the differences in battery life and speed?

Does anyone know if Staples' compaq v5303 have BrightView?

its preference, 12 is ultra portable and 15" is standard and 17" is desktop replacement
Toddler said: steevo said: Explain to me, why is 12.1" so good when there are 15" and 17" screens at the same price?Because you have the exact same screen resolution and processing power as those 15" and 17" units packed into a compact 12".
12" laptops are superior to 15" or 17" IMO.</blockquote>

I just wanted to share some links that I've been going through while researching my laptop purchase -
Notebookreview.com - hands down, seems to be the best site. The forums are incredible, and have everything you could possibly want to know about the various computers and companies. Also have some great technology guides, including terminology definitions and DIY guides.
CNET Laptop buying guide. I ESPECIALLY love the chart here; while obviously very simplified, it is a handy chart nonetheless: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-7602_7-1016082-3.html?tag=tnav
MS Vista stuff - great info about all things MS Vista, including what you need in a laptop if you hope to run it.
Does anything else have any finds to share? Ideally, we could link to reviews and relevant pages for each laptop in the thread summary, but I'm off to bed, so I'll have to take that up later if the interest is there.

I know what you mean! I was hesitant to post at all since most people claim to be avoiding the "lame" OM deals.. But realistically, its not likely OM will have more than 2 of these per store so they will be near impossible to get anyway.

Portability yet features typically found on 17" Desktop replacement notebooks. 15.4 is the cheapest normally so those deals are not as special. YNMV...Your needs may vary!
15.4" WXGA high-definition TFT-LCD widescreen display with BrightView technology and 1280 x 800 resolution
12.1" WXGA with AveraBrite
How much faster is the OM Duo laptop compared to the Bestbuy Centrino Solo?
I want a fast Intel Laptop for a very good price. Should I wait it out or should I buy the bestbuy one and when I find a better one buy that one and sell the best buy one on eBay?

I want a fast Intel Laptop for a very good price. Should I wait it out or should I buy the bestbuy one and when I find a better one buy that one and sell the best buy one on eBay?The "BrightView technology" and "AveraBrite" are the same thing - each company calls the glossy finish they put on their laptop screens something different. The best way to tell the screens apart is by looking at some display models inside a store - the glossy ones are very shiny. While this makes for better photo or video quality, it can give you big reflections if you have a light source behind you. Personally, I'd prefer to not have the glossy finish, but it seems as though I'm against the grain in that regard.
As far as your other question, it is difficult to say which processor is faster. The Turon x2 at OM is 64-bit, so it is better prepared for Windows Vista and future 64-bit software. All of today's software is written for 32-bit, so you won't notice a huge difference right away. Also, the dual processors mean you'll be running smoother if you do a lot of multitasking on your computer, or if software is written specifically for 2 processors. Again, most software today is just written for single. Finally, the Turion processors are not as efficient as the Intels battery-wise, so there are some tradeoffs.

You mean besides this same laptop which sells for $899 at Buy.com?
Battery on the Averatec lasts 3+ hours. FYI. Confimed buy users over the the averatecforums. Thats pretty darn good for such a small laptop packed with those features.

Man, I really want to get in on that averatec, I'm think about picking it up it and the 22" widescreen from bestbuy, but I dont know if that would even be feasible (I dont know if I'd be able to buy the laptop at officemax, then get to best buy before the widescreens sell out, even though the 2 stotes are right next to each other).
Also I've never went out on black friday before, anyone have any tips on when I should head to the store to get a good spot in line?. I really want that laptop.

Yes it looks like 899 is the regular price for this laptop, even direct from Averatec. Still 599 is a great price for this level computer. And Yes you can find the same laptop for less than 1200, but not too many others.

$599 is a good price for that lappy but most people will be after the sub $400 ones. Go to BB at 2 am and then try your luck at OM.Most people in front at BB will take the Laptops and then the desktops. And since BB has 2 below $500 latops, your chances might be better at getting the TV.Once you have the voucher for TV you can stand in line outside OM.
If someone who knows could post screen resolutions and video devices that each notebook has in the Quick Summary area, thjat'd be great. WXGA looks great on a 12.1", but on a 17" is it is crappy.....ty!

from what i have seen, all the 12, 14 and 15.4 inch laptops have screen resolutions of 1280x800 ... the 17 inch ones are 1440x900 ...
integrated graphics on all the cheaper laptops ... i dont think there is so much difference between the integrated graphics chipsets that it will be a deal breaker ... Intel graphics might be crappier than ati or nvidia, but will do regular jobs without any problems .. none of these are meant for gaming/video intensive applications anyway...
